Assam government evicts Purbanchal Cement from land in Sarutari

03 May 2023

India: The state government of Assam has issued Purbanchal Cement with a notice to vacate illegally occupied land in Saraturi. The Sentinel newspaper has reported that the cement producer reportedly used a ‘duplicate registration paper’ to occupy 100 hectares of land in the South Kamrup Tribal Belt.

The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) welcomed the authorities’ action, and called for the closure of Purbanchal Cement’s ‘main plant,’ in order to ‘free’ the tribal belt.

Dalmia Cement secures new waste streams from Vedanta Aluminium

16 March 2023

India: Dalmia Cement has awarded a contract for the supply of fly ash and other industrial waste to Vedanta Aluminium. Under the deal, Vedanta Aluminium will supply fly ash for use at Dalmia Cement’s cement plants across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya and Assam. It will deliver spent pot linings to the producer’s Rajgangpur cement plant in Odisha. The fly ash contract will remain in effect until 2028 and the pot lining contract until 2026.

Vedanta chief executive officer Sunil Gupta said “Strategic collaborations such as this will provide multiple benefits in terms of enhanced quality, sustainability and cost benefits to cement manufacturing, while helping us in gainful waste management. Our waste-to-wealth initiatives are designed to develop thriving value-chains for converting our by-products into resources for complementary industries.”

Star Cement restructures wholly owned subsidiaries

06 February 2023

India: The board of directors of Star Cement has approved the sale of shares in two of its subsidiaries to a third subsidiary, Star Cement Meghalaya. Star Cement Meghalaya will acquire 40% stakes in Meghalaya-based Star Cement (I) and Assam-based Star Cement North East.

Neither Star Cement (I) nor Star Cement North East has yet to commence cement production. Parent company Star Cement is currently building two new grinding plants in Northeast India, where it is the market leader. The group also announced plans for a new 3Mt/yr clinker line in June 2022.

Purvanchal Cement to increase production capacity to 1Mt/yr by 2026

21 December 2022

India: Purvanchal Cement plans to invest US$24m in cement acquisitions and new grinding capacity construction projects before 2026. Under the plans, the producer will double its cement production capacity to 1Mt/yr. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the plans include the establishment of a grinding plant in West Bengal and a second new plant with an associated quarry in northern Assam.

Purvanchal Cement operates the 0.5Mt/yr Kamrup grinding plant in Assam.

Star Cement's first-half income rises as earnings drop so far in 2023 financial year

India: Star Cement generated US$156m in total income during the first half of the 2023 financial year, up by 36% year-on-year from US$114m during the first half of the 2022 financial year. The producer's net profit dropped by 16% year-on-year to US$8m from US$9.51m.

Calcom Cement must create 20 jobs for locals

06 July 2022

India: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed Calcom Cement to create 20 new full-time jobs for local people by January 2023. The Sentinel newspaper has recorded that the new positions must go to people from designated Project Affected Families (PAFs) with regard to the plant's Pipapukhuri cement plant in Assam. The designation covers any household which lost a source of a livelihood following the company's refusal to deliver a previously agreed rehabilitation package.

Star Cement to establish new 3Mt/yr clinker line

India: Star Cement plans to invest US$129m to establish a new 3Mt/yr clinker line. BusinessLine Online News has reported that producer currently operates 2.8Mt/yr-worth of clinker capacity across two units in Meghalaya. Star Cement says that it plans to increase its presence in the Northeast India, Bihar and West Bengal markets. It will additionally invest US$90 – 103m to establish two new grinding units with a combined capacity of 4Mt/yr at Guwahati and Silchar in Assam.

Star Cement said that projected infrastructure investment growth in Northeast India inspired its investment decision, while it opted for a 3Mt/yr kiln over a 2Mt/yr alternative due to the improved efficiencies it offers.

Dalmia Cement Bharat’s Bokaro cement plant celebrates World Environment Day

07 June 2021

India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has marked World Environment Day with the ceremonial planting of a tree at the Bokaro cement plant in Jharkhand. In Assam, the company planted 6000 Neem, Royal Poinciana and Yellow Poinciana saplings and 4km of bamboo fence around its Alsthom Industries cement plant in Jagiroad.

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) executive director Indrajit Chatterji said, “We at Dalmia Cement have been firm believers in creating a clean and green ecosystem, especially in this pandemic situation across the world. With this tree plantation drive, we would humbly like to make a contribution towards the nature. I would urge all, to come forward and join hands to do our bit towards enabling a greener environment not only for us, but for the future generations to come. We, as a responsible corporate citizen, will always come forward to do whatever we can for the society at large.”

Star Cement incorporates subsidiaries in Assam and Meghalaya

India: Star Cement has incorporated new subsidiaries in Assam and Meghalaya. It has set up Star Cement North East in Guwahati, Assam and Star Cement Lumshnong in Lumshnong, Meghalaya. Both business units are yet to start conducting operations. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has approved both incorporations.

OPGC dispatches fly ash to ACC

24 May 2021

India: Power company OPGC has dispatched its first shipment of fly ash to ACC’s Jhinkpani cement plant in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. The Pioneer newspaper has reported that the shipment consists of 3450t of fly ash from its Ib power plant. The power plant has fly ash storage facilities with a capacity of 6900t. It previously supplied ash to a Star Cement cement plant in Assam.
