Venezuela: Anti-corruption non-government organisation Transparencia Venezuela says that cement production at the country’s state-run plants dropped by 41% to 6Mt in 2015 from 10.2Mt in 2010. Four of these companies were only able to use 52% of their installed capacity between 2011 and 2015, according to the El Nacional newspaper. Fabrica Nacional de Cemento, Cemento Andino and Vencemos allegedly saw their production levels decline by 67%, 39% and 15% respectively over this period.
Cemento Andino reports second line 70% complete
27 May 2016Venezuela: Cemento Andino has reported that work on its second production line at its cement plant in Candelaria, Trujillo is 70% complete. The new line will be completed in 2017. The US$103m line has a 1.12Mt/yr clinker production capacity and a 1.36Mt/yr cement production capacity. At present the cement plant has a clinker production capacity of 0.75Mt/yr. The plant was nationalised by the Venezuelan government in late 2006.
Venezuela: The Venezuelan government is considering centralising the running of all the state-run cement firms in the country under a single entity, Corporacion Socialista del Cemento. In 2009, the state took over the three main cement companies, and while the aforementioned firm owns Industria Venezolana de Cemento, Fabrica Nacional de Cementos, Cemento Andino and Venezolana de Cementos, each company currently operates autonomously.
Venezuela: Cemento Andino's Trujillo plant in Venezuela is set to undergo a US$240m capacity expansion. The plant currently produces around 600,000t/yr of cement. The construction of a new production line is expected to triple Cemento Andino's capacity. The project will take around two years to complete, generating around 500 direct and 1000 indirect jobs.
Venezuela: Industries minister José David Cabello has overturned a resolution designating Gilberto Barrios Contreras as president of the Cemento Andino. Barrios Contreras was appointed to the post by the previous industries minister in a resolution dated 25 march 2014.
Cemento Andino to launch second production line
23 October 2013Venezuela: Cemento Andino plans to build a second production line taking its cement production capacity to 2Mt/yr from 0.7Mt/yr. People's Minister for Industries, Ricardo Menendez, made the announcement on a visit to the cement plant in the state of Trujillo. He added that Chinese contractors will be working on the project.
Sales strong through first 11 months in Peru
19 December 2012Peru: Cement production in Peru reached 8.98Mt in the first 11 months of 2012, growing by 16.7% compared to the same period in 2011, according to figures from the national cement association Asocem. Production in October 2012 alone reached a record 926,623t.
Cement shipments within the country reached 8.76Mt to the end of November 2012, growing by 16.6% compared to the same period of 2012. Meanwhile, cement exports in the January-November 2012 period grew by 200% year-on-year to 173,198t.
Cement producers active in the country are making the most of the current demand in the market. Cemento Andino and Cementos Lima agreed to merge in July 2012, giving rise to the largest player in the local market, with an installed capacity of some 7.6Mt/yr of cement. At the same time, Mexican cement producer Cemex is building a new US$230m, 1Mt/yr production facility in the country.
Cementos Lima mulling merger with Cemento Andino
11 April 2012Peru: Cementos Lima, the largest cement producer in Peru, has announced that it is considering a merger with Cemento Andino, which produces cement in the central mountain region of the country.
Cementos Lima said in a note sent to the Peruvian securities regulatory agency that it has hired Citigroup Global Markets Inc. to carry out an independent valuation of both companies. It said the valuation could be used should the board of directors decide to propose a merger between the two companies.
