SONACIM orders generator part from Chinese supplier

05 January 2023

Chad: Société National de Cimenterie (SONACIM) has placed an order with a China-based machine parts supplier for a part for its Baoré grinding plant’s generator. Alwihda News has reported that previously ordered the part from a supplier based in Egypt, which since failed to make the delivery. Cement production has been suspended at the plant since early July 2022, pending delivery of the missing part.

SONACIM’s deputy director general Koye Ndaye Benoît said “As soon as the part arrives, production will be restarted.”

430 people are employed in SONACIM’s operations in Chad.

Cimenteries du Cameroun launches construction of new 0.5Mt/yr line at Figuil cement plant

20 October 2021

Cameroon: Cimenteries du Cameroun has begun building a new US$88.4m 0.5Mt/yr line at its 0.15Mt/yr Figuil cement plant. Agence Ecofin News has reported that the line is scheduled for commissioning in October 2023. It will have an additional clinker capacity of 0.1Mt/yr. When commissioned, the expanded plant will serve northern Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic, and bring the company's total cement capacity to 2.5Mt/yr.The LafargeHolcim Maroc Afrique subsidiary, in which the Cameroon National Investment Company (SNI) holds a minority stake, aims to compete with market leader Dangote Cement in Cameroon.

Cement shipment seized in Cameroon masquerading as United Nations delivery

23 June 2021

Cameroon: Two cement trucks masquerading as belonging to a United Nations agency have been seized by customs officials. The smugglers were pretending to be transporting food and pharmaceutical products in transit to Chad, according the Ecofin Agency. The cement is believed to have originated from Nigeria. The operation by customs authorities was part of the ongoing Halcomi (halte au commerce illicite) initiative.

Chad Baore Cement plant to reopen

11 November 2020

Chad: Idriss Déby, the president of Chad, says that Société Nationale de Ciment du Tchad’s (SONACIM) grinding plant at Baore will reopen in the next month. The government has paid the company a subsidy of US$9m to restart operations, according to the Alwihda newspaper. The price of cement will also be capped locally. The president previously asked SONCAIM to restart production at the unit in July 2020 following reports of cement shortages and price rises.

Chadian president asks SONACIM to restart production

Chad: Idriss Déby, the president of Chad, has asked the Société Nationale de Ciment du Tchad (SONACIM) to restart production following reports of cement shortages and price rises. He made the announcement following a meeting with representatives of the local industry, according to the Journal du Tchad. SONACIM’s plant at Baore has reportedly been not operating recently due to long-running issues since its opening in 2012.

CIMAF opens cement grinding plant in Chad

13 September 2018

Chad: Morocco’s Ciments de l’Afrique (CIMAF) has launched commercial operations at its new 0.5Mt/yr grinding plant at Lamadji. CIMAF regional director Hatim Kahttabi said that the production capcity of the unit is expandable to 1Mt/yr, according to Alwihda. The project had an investment of Euro35m and it has created 200 jobs.

Cimencam upgrading Figuil cement plant

06 June 2018

Cameroon: Cimencam will spend US$70m to upgrade its integrated plant at Figuil. A new kiln is being built at the plant to meet increased demand from export markets in Chad and the Central African Republic, according to the Cameroon Tribune newspaper. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim is also building a cement grinding plant at Nomayos.

Chad starts construction of second cement plant

30 March 2016

Chad: Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacké has laid the first stone for the construction for a cement plant in Ngara. The initial production capacity of the new plant will be 0.5Mt/yr and this is planned to increase to 3Mt/yr, according to local press.

The plant is a joint project between Chad and China. The cost of construction will be US$52m and the building should be completed by April 2017. The project will create 300 jobs initially and this may rise to up to 1000 if the plant reaches its higher production capacity.

Ciment du Tchad, a subsidiary of government-owned SONaCIM, opened the country’s first cement plant at Baore in 2011. The 0.2Mt/yr plant reached its full capacity output in 2012.

Ciment de l'Afrique to spend US$40m on cement unit in Chad

Chad/Morocco: Moroccan company Ciment de l'Afrique intends to build a US$40m cement unit in Chad. The announcement was made by Chadian president Idriss Deby Itno at a launch event in N'Djamena for two large investment projects made in conjunction with Morocco.
