Colombia: Grupo Argos subsidiary Cementos Argos has recycled a total of 7m cement bags since 2013 under its Green Bags recycling initiative. The El Nuevo Siglo newspaper has reported that the recycled bags contained 1000t of paper. In water savings alone, the figure corresponds to 80,200m3 - enough water to supply 472,000 people for a day. 159 commercial customers have so far contributed their used bags. In the Medellín metropolitan area, the programme achieved a bag return rate of 95%.The group overcame coronavirus pandemic-related challenges to recycle 15,900 bags in 2020.
Cementos Argos reports consolidated sales and profit drop in 2020
25 February 2021Colombia: Cementos Argos’ full-year consolidated net sales in 2020 were US$2.52bn, down by 4% year-on-year from US$2.62bn in 2019. The group’s cement volumes declined by 9% to 14.7Mt from 16.1Mt. Net profit for the year was US$21.8m, down by 36% from US$34.1m. Volumes, sales and earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) declined in all three of the group’s regions.
The company said that in the fourth quarter of 2020 the construction sector maintained a ‘positive trend,’ supported by the strong performance of the residential segment. It also recorded a slight improvement in the infrastructure segment. The producer said that warehouses and data centre projects had partially offset the weak performance of the segment, as offices and retail had been the most impacted during the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief executive officer Juan Esteban Calle, “I would like thank each one of our employees for their full commitment and resilience during 2020. I believe the experience we all lived over the last year will lead us to be even stronger and more prepared to face the opportunities and challenges of the future.”
Cemex Colombia receives environmental clearance for upcoming Cementera del Magdelena Medio cement plant expansion
17 February 2021Colombia: The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Antioquia (CorAntioquia) approved the modification of the environmental license of Cemex Colombia’s upcoming 1.0Mt/yr Cementera del Magdelena Medio integrated cement plant in Maceo, Antioquia. The modification will allow for the production of up to 1.5Mt/yr of cement annually. It will additionally enable the company to extract up to 990,000t/yr of limestone and clay. The producer called the authorisation an ‘important step’ towards the plant’s completion.
Cemex Colombia and Peru president Alejandro Ramírez said, "The modification of the environmental licence is a milestone that allows us to resume work to make this project a reality, through which it is expected that we will offer our materials for infrastructure and housing works in the country more efficiently."
Cementos Argos transports 50,000t of cement by train in 2020
17 February 2021Colombia: Cementos Argos transported around 50,000t of cement by train in 2020. It plans to increase this by 30% year-on-year to 70,000t in 2021 as part of its sustainability strategy. The cement producer has started using the Belencito - Bogotá and Puerto Triunfo - Puerto Wilches routes as the country has started to revive railway lines in recent years.
Colombia: Switzerland-based finance company RobecoSAM has listed Cementos Argos in the Silver Class in its Sustainability Yearbook 2021. It chose the producer from among over 7000 companies from 61 industries on the basis of its Dow Jones Sustainability Index score.

Holcim Colombia launches Eco cement bag label
08 February 2021Colombia: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim Colombia has launched Eco, a cement bag label detailing products’ CO2 emissions reduction by comparison to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), on its Boyacá Súper Fuerte and Holcim Maestro cements. The La República newspaper has reported that the labels signal the company’s commitment to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C anti-climate change initiative.
Executive president Marco Maccarelli said that the launch is one more step on company’s path towards Net Zero and sustainable construction, engaging the entire value chain.
Cemex increases its Cemex Latam Holdings stake to 93%
18 December 2020Colombia: Mexico-based Cemex has increased its stake in subsidiary Cemex Latam Holdings to 93% from 73%. Citigroup Global Markets acted as advisor and Corredores Davivienda acted as intermediary broker for the offer.
The group said, “Through the offer, Cemex is simplifying and strengthening its overall capital structure by further consolidating its indirect interest in CLH.
Mondi to open paper bags plant in Colombia in January 2021
02 December 2020Colombia: Austria-based Mondi Group plans to open its first South American paper bags plant in Cartagena in January 2021. The unit will start with one production line with a capacity of approximately 50m bags/yr. The bags will be targeted at the cement, chemical and food industries. The group said that the plant is located in a free-trade zone with good access to ports in Panama, the east coast of the US, the Gulf of Mexico and other Caribbean ports.
"Our global network already includes 39 plants across 22 countries. We are excited to be expanding our footprint to Colombia, helping us to provide innovative, sustainable and customer-focused paper packaging solutions to customers in South America who share our commitment to quality," said Claudio Fedalto, Chief Operating Officer Paper Bags, Mondi.
LafargeHolcim launches ECOPact concretes in Latin America region
25 November 2020Americas: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim has begun its roll-out of ECOPact low-carbon concretes in its Latin America region, launching the product range in Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico to “meet growing demand for green products.” The company says that the launch in other markets will follow in early 2021. It said “this roll-out of ECOPact builds on its successful market adoption across Europe, the UK, the US and Canada.” The producer additionally plans to introduce its ECOLabel “to transparently communicate the environmental benefits of its green cement range” across the Disensa retail network from December 2020, enabling customers to “easily identify products that comply with the company’s green criteria, including lower carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint and recycled content.” Every country in the region will have at least one ECOlabel product, according to the company.
Latin America regional head Oliver Osswald said, “With the roll-out of the widest range of green building materials in Latin America, we are committed to leading the way in sustainable construction. Building on our region’s excellent third quarter 2020 results, demonstrating strong resilience despite an unparalleled health crisis, Latin America is well positioned to tackle the challenges ahead. LafargeHolcim’s Latin America retail network Disensa will reach 2500 stores in 2020, almost double the number in 2018. The company said, “Disensa will become the central network to reach millions of consumers with a diverse product portfolio, based on quality and environmental benefits by offering ECOLabel products on a wide scale. Disensa will also introduce new digital experiences to the buying process and eventually become a full line of stores from Disensa Express to Disensa MAX!”
LafargeHolcim will host the First Latam Virtual Convention for current and potential Disensa franchisees from 25 – 27 November 2020, with participants from eight Latin American countries.
Cementos Argos retains place in Dow Jones Sustainability Index
16 November 2020Colombia: Cementos Argos is celebrating its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the eighth consecutive year. The company said that the listing acknowledges its “good practices in economic, environmental and social matters.” Its owner Grupo Argos came second in the materials sector, which accounted for 4.3% of the total index weight, while the company itself came third. The index also highlighted it within the Latin American Integrated Market (MILA)-Pacific Alliance.
The company said, “One of the main advantages of this index is that it is a lever to promote cutting-edge business practices that seek to improve the impact of companies on society and the environment and, increasingly, to strengthen their relationship with different interest groups, whether they are communities, investors, suppliers, employees or authorities, among others.”
