Dominican Republic cement sales fall slightly in 2017
13 April 2018Dominican Republic: Cement sales fell slightly by 1.5% year-on-year to 4.18Mt in 2017 from 4.24Mt in 2018. Adocem, the Dominican Portland Cement Producers Association, blamed the slowdown on a slowdown of the general economy. It also reported that exports grew in 2017 to 20.1% of production from 17.3% in 2016.
Cement exports to Haiti from Dominican Republic wane
19 January 2018Haiti: Cement exports from the Dominican Republic to Haiti have fallen significantly following an import ban introduced in October 2015. Data from the Adocem, the cement association of the Dominican Republic, shows that almost a third of cement produced in the country was exported to Haiti, according to Diario Libre. However this fell to 16.1% by November 2017. Local cement production is 4.77Mt with 3.82Mt sold domestically and the rest exported.
Alejandro Ramírez Cantú appointed president of FICEM
06 September 2017Guatemala: The Inter-American Cement Federation (FICEM) has appointed Alejandro Ramírez Cantú, the chief executive of Cemex in the Dominican Republic, as its new president for the period 2017 – 2020 at its technical congress. He succeeds Gabriel Restrepo, manager of Institutional Affairs at Cementos Argos, in the role, according to the 7 Dias newspaper.
Ramírez Cantú is an industrial and systems engineer trained at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico and he holds a Master's Degree in business administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Cemex in 2000 and he has directed operations in Thailand, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
Dominican Republic: Colombian cement producer Cementos Argos has announced the appointment of Gary Manuel de la Rosa as its new Director General in the Dominican Republic. Previously, de la Rosa acted as a director of the industrial business unit at Cementos Argos in the Caribbean and Central American region.
Dominican cement sales rise 7.5% in 2016
07 June 2017Dominican Republic: Adocem, the association of Portland cement manufacturers in the Dominican Republic, has highlighted the contribution of the local cement industry towards the country's development. According to Rayza Rodriguez, the new president of Adocem, the cement industry recorded a 7.5% rise in sales during 2016 compared to 2015, whereas it grew by 3.5% in the first quarter of 2017.
Dominican Republic: Alejandro Ramirez Cantu has been appointed as the president of Cemex Dominican Republic. Ramirez succeeds Carlos Emilio Gonzalez, who has held the position since 2011, according to the Diario Libre newspaper. Ramirez will also be responsible for the operations of Cemex in Bahamas and Haiti. He has worked for the building materials producer since 2000, managing operations in Thailand, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica.
Cemex Dominicana inaugurates packing plant
07 April 2017Dominican Republic: Cemex Dominicana, the local subsidiary of Mexico’s Cemex, has inaugurated a packing plant at its cement plant in San Pedro de Macorís. Danilo Medina Sánchez , the president of the country, attended the event. The US$8.5m unit will allow the plant to increases its cement packing capacity by 1.5m bags/yr or 0.8Mt/yr. Other improvements include a new building to house the packing line, a 1275m2 warehouse for palletised cement and a new weighting system to speed up despatch. Carlos Emilio González, the president of Cemex Dominicana, also announced an investment of US$40m over the next two years in power generation, changes to the mill and other upgrades at the plant.
Annual cement sales up by 8.15% so far in Dominican Republic
01 December 2016Dominican Republic: Adocem, the cement association for the Dominican Republic, has reported that sales have risen by 8.15% year-on-year to 4.3Mt so far in 2016, according to the Listin Diario newspaper. Association president Gabriel Ballestas commented that the industry has benefited from government efforts and other local industries.
Grupo Corripio buys Cementos Andino Dominicanos
21 March 2016Dominican Republic: Grupo Corripio has acquired the majority of the shares of Cementos Andino Dominicanos in Cabo Rojo, according to the country’s President Danilo Medina. The previous owners will retain a stake in the company.
All current employees will receive their wages in the first two weeks of April 2016. In addition, between 300 and 400 new jobs will be created. Dominican business José Luis Corripio Estrada and owner of Grupo Corripio added that it will increase the company’s cement production capacity and potentially increase the number of workers to 700.
Cementos Andino counts cost of Haitian overland import ban
07 October 2015Dominican Republic/Haiti: Cementos Andino, based in the Dominican Republic, has reported that it will register extra costs of US$44,189/month due to a Haitian ban on cement entering the country overland. Nelson Bello, president of Cementos Andino, explained that maritime transport will increase costs, due to unloading and handling services at ports, among other activities.
Cementos Andino exported 458,818t of cement between 2006 and August 2015, generating US$48.4m. Panama and Haiti were the main destinations.
