Philippines: Holcim Philippines plans to invest US$4.18m in upgrades to its cement plants at La Union, Bacnotan, and Lugait, Misamis Oriental to improve business and sustainability performance.
The subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim held a ceremonial signing ceremony on 7 July 2021 to award the contract to Sinoma CBMIPH Construction to install a drying facility at the La Union plant. The project is intended to reduce the fuel consumption of the unit by reusing hot gases from operations to dry materials. The integrated plant was recently awarded an ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management System and recertified for ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System) by certification body TÜV Rheinland. Holcim Philippines has also contracted Sinoma CBMIPH to install a drying facility at its Lugait plant that will reduce moisture of raw materials to improve grinding operations. The La Union and Lugait projects are scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2022 and by the end of October 2021 respectively.
In January 2021, Holcim Philippines also started projects worth US$2.42m to raise the efficiency of converting qualified waste materials to alternative fuels of its cement plant in Bulacan, Norzagaray. These will enable its Geocycle subsidiary to support the Bulacan plant to increase its thermal substitution rate by using more post-consumer and municipal solid wastes as alternative fuels.
Lafarge Canada, Geocycle Canada and Rio Tinto join forces for aluminium recycling project
21 October 2020Canada: Lafarge Canada, Geocycle Canada and Rio Tinto are working together to reuse waste from the aluminium smelting process to make cement. The three companies have developed a new product called Alextra, made from used potlining, as part of the aluminium electrolysis process that would otherwise go to landfill. Lafarge Canada plans to produce on average 1Mt/yr of cement at its plant in Bath, Ontario, using Alextra as an alternative to raw materials such as alumina and silica. The companies will also explore options to further expand the supply of Alextra from Rio Tinto’s Potlining Treatment Plant in Saguenay-Lac-St Jean to Lafarge Canada's network of cement plants.
"This partnership shows how Rio Tinto is innovating to find new ways to reuse waste, generating value from our operations and reducing their environmental footprint,” said Rio Tinto Aluminium manager valorisation and marketing Stéphane Poirier. “We have worked closely with Lafarge Canada and Geocycle Canada over the past two years to develop a product that meets their needs and look forward to building on this partnership,”

Sri Lanka: Holcim Lanka is spending US$22m towards upgrading its cement grinding plant in Ruhunu, Galle. The investment will increase the plant's cement grinding capacity from 0.6Mt/yr to 1Mt/yr. The upgrade will also increase capacity on a Geocycle waste shredding line, building up the clinker warehouse and process efficiency improvement to a sludge drying facility.
"We also intend to make considerable improvements to our distribution by enhancing our logistics," said Holcim Group CEO Bernard Fontana during his first visit to Sri Lanka. Holcim will be concentrating on increasing their production from both their facilities in Puttalam and Ruhunu in the future.
"In our 18 years of existence in Sri Lanka, we have tripled our cement manufacturing capacity to reach 2.3Mt/yr," said Philippe Richart, CEO, Holcim Lanka. Holcim Lanka sold approximately 1.5Mt of cement in 2013 and generated annual revenues of US$154m in 2013.
