France: Lafarge France has signed a memorandum of understanding with green hydrocarbons specialist Axens, utilities provider EDF and research firm IFP Energies Nouvelles for a synthetic fuel production trial. The partners will build a plant to produce kerosene using captured CO2 from a carbon capture installation at Lafarge France's Saint-Pierre-La-Cour cement plant. The project, called Take Kair, aims to produce fuel for use by aviation companies, including Air France-KLM Group.
Holcim France president François Petry said "The decarbonisation of our processes and products is at the heart of our strategic commitment to reach Net Zero by 2050. Beyond the modernisation of our production tools, we work on all industrial and technological levers to reduce our emissions, and thus decarbonise our industry. With the Take Kair project, we are taking a decisive step in the capture and management of our residual CO2 emissions and participate with our partners in the emergence of an innovative and sustainable sector serving the country's mobility needs."
Lafarge France, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim, announced a Euro40m investment in the 1.6Mt/yr Saint-Pierre-La-Cour cement plant to achieve carbon neutral cement production there in March 2022.
India: Shree Cement has announced four planned capacity expansion projects that aim to increase its installed cement production capacity by 20% to 55.9Mt/yr. The Telegraph newspaper has reported that the producer expects to invest US$670 - 730m in the expansion. The investments will go towards the establishment of new facilities in Karnataka, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The West Bengal project consists of a grinding plant in Howrah or Purba Medinipur District. The new phase of expansion is part of Shree Cement's strategy to reach 80Mt/yr of cement production capacity by 2030.
Vice chair Prashant Bangur said “Given the robust demand for cement in the country and Shree Cement’s aspiration to grow further, we are looking at four more units once the present phase of expansion is over.”
Shree Cement is currently expanding its Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and Nawalgarh, Rajasthan, cement plants and building its new 3Mt/yr Purulia grinding plant in West Bengal.
Cemento Polpaico to invest US$67m in growth
15 June 2023Chile: Cemento Polpaico plans to invest US$67m in expanding its operations, with a focus on its Cerro Blanco cement plant in Santiago. Work will include the construction of a solar power plant and the expansion of the plant's limestone quarry. Meanwhile, Cemento Polpaico will upgrade the plant's kiln to increase its alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate to 75% from 13%. The upgrade will increase the production line's clinker capacity by 13% and reduce its CO2 emissions by 20,000t/yr. Additionally, the producer will build a new 3000t cement silo.
Peru: Unacem and Grupo Calidra have received clearance from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) to launch a joint venture in the lime sector. Carretera News has reported that the new company will establish a 600t/day lime plant, at an investment cost of US$40m. The partners expect to commission the plant in early-mid 2025. Unacem, which holds a 51% stake in the venture, has reported that it and Grupo Calidra will fund the growth from a combination of their own finances and bank loans.
Cemcor upgrades Cookstown cement plant's bag filter
13 June 2023UK: Cemcor has installed a new US$7.54m bag filter at its Cookstown cement plant in County Tyrone. The system will detect signs of bag damage and isolate the affected row of bags for either online maintenance or, if the damage is minor, resealing with process dust.
The Irish News has reported that managing director David Millar said “We are forward thinking at Cemcor and understood it was time to put our money on the line and invest in the plant's efficiencies and sustainable outputs, to protect the environment around us and future-proof the plant itself."
Nigeria: BUA Cement plans to use loans worth US$500m towards the construction of two new 3Mt/yr cement plants in Sokoto State. When operational, the new plants will increase the producer's installed capacity by 55% to 17Mt/yr. Local press has reported that BUA Cement plans to run both cement plants using solar power, and to produce cement using alternative fuel (AF). Additionally, the producer will use a portion of the funding to replace part of its diesel-fuelled cement truck fleet with new natural gas-fuelled models.
Of a total US$500m in financing secured by BUA Cement on 5 June 2023, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) lent US$161m (32%) and African Development Bank, Africa Finance Corporation and the German Investment Corporation jointly lent US$245m (49%), with the remainder advanced by institutional investors.
JSW Cement takes US$50m sustainability-linked loan
12 June 2023India: JSW Cement has signed a US$50m sustainability-linked loan agreement with BNP Paribas Singapore. The Hindu BusinessLine newspaper has reported that the producer plans to use the funds for capital expenditure projects aimed to more than double its production capacity to 50Mt/yr from 17Mt/yr. Current plans include US$388m in investments in the construction of a 2.5Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Madhya Pradesh and a 2.5Mt/yr grinding plant in Uttar Pradesh.
The latest loan from BNP Paribas is the second of its kind taken by the group, following a US$48.5m sustainability-linked loan from Japan-based MUFG Bank in October 2022.
India: Dalmia Bharat has announced a capacity target of 120Mt/yr by the end of 2031. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that the producer will make total investments of US$2.31bn in its on-going growth drive. The sum includes US$723m invested in the acquisition of Jaypee Group's 9.4Mt/yr cement business in December 2022. Dalmia Bharat's eventual investments in erecting new capacity are estimated at US$1.09bn, US$485m (44%) of it in its North Indian cement business.
CEO Puneet Dalmia said “We are executing the largest capital expenditure in our history.” Regarding the Jaypee Group deal, Dalmia said "The acquisition will give us access to Central India’s and North India’s markets and we would look for more acquisition opportunities in the mid segment. We expect the industry to consolidate further in the coming years. India will invest US$1Tn in infrastructure in the next decade, and that will create a sizeable demand growth for cement.”
US: Heidelberg Materials North America will inaugurate its new 2.4Mt/yr Mitchell cement plant in Indiana on 13 June 2023. The plant cost US$600m to build and is Heidelberg Materials' 'most technologically advanced and sustainable' cement plant, according to the company. It includes a 32,000t/yr cement terminal, served by a newly renovated rail depot. Heidelberg Materials North America has commissioned 1000 new rail cars to assist in efficient distribution of cement produced at the Mitchell plant.
Egypt: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Suez Cement has invested US$16m in upgrading its operations towards increased alternative fuel (AF) use since 2010. The producer uses AF in the burners and kilns of all three of its cement plants, at Helwan, Kattameya and Suez. Meanwhile, Suez Cement has invested US$60m in dust control measures over the same period. Other on-going investments include US$25m in the construction of a waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at the Helwan cement plant. The company is committed to reaching a 24% reduction in its CO2 emissions between 2019 and 2030.
