Sinai Cement starts production efficiency plans

Egypt: Sinai Cement has started implementing its plans to improve its production efficiency. Vicat Egypt, one of the owners of the company, plans to invest Euro30m into its subsidiary. It has already granted Sinai Cement a loan of Euro10.6m and the cement company received a first tranche of Euro2.6m in April 2019.

LafargeHolcim Zimbabwe to invest US$25m on capacity utilisation

Zimbabwe: LafargeHolcim has allocated US$25m to LafargeHolcim Zimbabwe to raise its production capacity utilisation. The investment was announced following a meeting between President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and Miljan Gutovic, the Middle East and Africa area director for LafargeHolcim, according to the Standard newspaper. The investment will also be used to create additional production capacity for agricultural lime and automation of a dry mortar plant. This latest cash injection follows a US$30m loan from LafargeHolcim.

Cemex Ventures invests in logistics software supplier Linkx

12 April 2019

Mexico: Cemex Ventures has invested in Linkx, a company that offers software to optimise goods delivery. The company’s software solution allows control of deliveries and vehicles in real time, allowing for data-based decision-making and facilitating communication and information among all involved parties: shipper, carrier, and receiver.

“This investment is a clear example of our offer. Linkx came to us at a very early stage, and together, we worked on continuous improvements by reinforcing their minimum viable product and offering continuous feedback on our knowledge of industry and technology. After numerous optimisations, we have piloted this solution with several Cemex clients to achieve a very robust solution for the supply chain management challenge," said Gonzalo Galindo, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cemex Ventures.

Cemex Ventures is the corporate venture capital wing of Cemex that was launched in 2017. It invests in startups with potential in the construction industry and works with entrepreneurs, universities and other stakeholders.

HeidelbergCement considering Euro25m investment in Togo

08 April 2019

Togo: HeidelbergCement is considering investments of up to Euro25m in its local subsidiaries including Cimtogo, Scantogo and Granutogo. Local director general of the company Eric Goulignac outlined the plans, including building and installing a new mill at Cimtogo’s cement grinding plant in Lomé and a photvoltaic (PV) solar energy plant, according to the All Africa news agency. The projects will be considered by the board of HeidelbergCement in the summer before a final decision is made.

KKR considering investing US$284m in Emami Group

India: US private equity company KKR is reportedly discussing investing up to US$284m in Emami Group. Sources quoted by the Economic Times newspaper said that Emami Group was looking to reduce its debts and raise funds for an expansion strategy.

Caisse pulls back from selling stake in McInnis Cement

Canada: The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) says it no longer wants to sell its majority stake in McInnis Cement. CDPQ’s chief executive officer (CEO) said that the pension and insurance fund is ‘convinced’ of the potential the company, according to the Journal de Quebec newspaper. The company hired consultants in 2018 to look at a potential sale.

Terex Washing Systems invests in North American sales and operations

31 January 2019

US/Canada: Terex says that its Terex Washing Systems (TWS) brand is investing in its North American sales and operational teams. Following the spend it will have 20 regional partners via 50 service depots, 60 mobile trucks and 100 technicians in the region.

“Our new enhanced levels of sales and service and support will build upon momentum gained in recent years as we continue to focus on serving customers, with world-class washing equipment solutions that add commercial value to their operations,” said TWS’ director Oliver Donnelly.

TWS manufactures products for the mineral washing sector for aggregate, recycling, mining and industrial sand industries.

Holcim Mexico to invest up to US$50m in 2019

22 January 2019

Mexico: Holcim Mexico plans to invest up to US$50m in 2019 as part of a project to improve plant efficiency and its Disensa distribution network. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim said it wants to implement improvements at both its cement and ready-mix concrete plants, according to Reuters. It has a particular focus on reducing emissions. On the distribution side the building materials company said that its distribution business is a part of its long-term plan for Latin America.
