Shree Cement to spend US$140m on two grinding plants
03 December 2018India: Shree Cement plans to invest around US$140m towards building two grinding plants at Jharkhand and Odisha respectively. Both units will be supported by the company’s integrated plant at Chhattisgarh, according to the Press Trust of India. Each grinding plant will have a production capacity of around 2Mt/yr but this will vary depending on the type of cement produced.
The cement producer also started a new plant in Karnataka in late November 2018. It expects the site to take three years to ramp up production.
Jindal Steel & Power to build 2Mt/yr slag cement plant at Angul
31 October 2018India: Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) plans to build a 2Mt/yr slag cement plant at Angul in Odisha. The US$68m unit will use ground granulated blast furnace slag sourced from a nearby steel plant operated by JSP, according to the Business Standard newspaper. A recent expansion at the steel plant to 6Mt/yr has allowed it to support a cement plant of this size. Land for the project has been acquired and the company hopes to obtain it from the state government by early 2019.
India: A joint-venture project involving the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) to build a new cement plant at Sundargarh in Odisha has stalled. Following support by local politicians for the plans in February 2017 no further action has been taken, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. SAIL originally made plans in 2006 to use blast furnace slag from the Rourkela Steel Plant and fly ash of NTPC-SAIL Power Company for the unit. It also intended pick up the lease for a limestone mine at Purunapani. However, it later ran into troubles securing state agreement to use the mine.
JSW Cement starts building grinding plant in Odisha
25 September 2018India: JSW Cement has started building a 1.2Mt/yr cement grinding plant at Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in the Jajpur district of Odisha. The unit will be used to produce Ordinary Portland Cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), according to Projects Today. The project had been on hold since 2016 due to issues with the land. The unit is expected to be operational by September 2020.
OCL India holds stone-laying ceremony at Rajgangpur plant
28 August 2018India: OCL India has held a stone-laying ceremony for its third integrated cement plant at its Rajgangpur site in Odisha. Naveen Patnaik, chief minister of Odisha state, attended the event along with the management of OCL India and its owners, Dalmia Cement (Bharat). The new unit will be known as Dalmia DSP.
The new plant will have a 2.25Mt/yr cement and 3Mt/yr clinker production capacity. Once it becomes operational it will increase production at the Rajgangpur site to 6.25Mt/yr of cement and 5.9Mt/yr of clinker.
The project has an investment of US$356m and it is expected to be commissioned by early 2020. As part of the project the cement producer also plans to build a 2.5Mt/yr cement plant with an investment of US$57m at Biswali near Cuttack.
Emami Cement considering initial public offering
31 July 2018India: Emami Group is considering an initial public offering (IPO) for its cement subsidiary, Emami Cement. The IPO is intended to generate funds for expansion, according to sources quoted by the Hindu newspaper. The company has appointed a consultant to explore public issue prospects and preliminary discussions have started with merchant bankers. The cement producer has invested over US$575m to double its production capacity to 8Mt/yr from 4.4Mt/yr in the current financial year with plants in Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha.
Ramco Cement Limited orders three mills from Loesche
16 July 2018India: Ramco Cement has ordered three vertical roller mills from Germany’s Loesche. It has ordered two LM 41.2+2 CS type mills with two grinding rollers and two support rollers with a power range of 3000kW and a capacity of 130t/hr for two of its cement plants to grind the Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC). The first mill will be installed at Kolaghat, West Bengal, where Ramco Cement is upgrading a grinding plant to 2Mt/yr from 0.95Mt/yr. The second mill will be used at a grinding plant in Gobburupalam, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
A third mill has been ordered for a newly-built plant at Haridaspur in Odisha. Here, a LM 46.2+2 CS type mill with a capacity of 3750kW will be used to grind PPC with a throughput of 165t/hr. This order also includes mill fans, bag-type filters and further auxiliary equipment. It will all be delivered by the end of 2018.
India: Larsen & Toubro has won an order to build cement plants in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The end client has not been named and no value has been disclosed. The cement plant orders were announced as part of a wider set of orders worth over US$590m, including government construction projects.
OCL India to build new plant
21 May 2018India: Dalmia Bharat's subsidiary OCL India plans to build a new cement plant in Odisha. The new unit will have a production capacity of around 1.7Mt/yr and it will include a waste heat recovery system. It will bring the cement producer’s total cement capacity up to around 8Mt/yr in the states of Odisha and West Bengal. The project is estimated to cost around US$545m. The plant is expected to be completed by mid-2020.
Fake cement bagging operation raided in Odisha
08 May 2018India: Police have raided a factory near Cuttack, Odisha that has allegedly been selling repackaged cement. The unit purchased the franchise of a well-known cement brand and then used cement from damaged bags of the consignment to prepare unapproved mixtures, according to Odisha TV. The cement was then repackaged and supplied along with the original cement packets.
Up to 7500 fake cement bags, 300 bags of different cement brands and machinery was seized during the raid. The owner of the factory, Lalit Kumar Jain, was also arrested. He has disputed the allegations.
