Shiva Cement seeks shareholder approval for 2Mt/yr Odisha cement plant expansion

30 March 2022

India: Shiva Cement's board of directors has approved the launch of a shareholders' vote over plans to increase its Odisha cement plant's capacity by 2Mt/yr. The plan also involves the expansion of the same plant's clinker capacity by 3Mt/yr and the installation of a 12MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant. In addition to this, the company is seeking to open two new limestone mines with a combined capacity of 1.9 - 3.1Mt/yr at Khatkurbahal, also in Odisha. The company has received Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change approval for all of the plans.

Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel to build 18.8Mt cement plant in Odisha

India: The Odisha government has approved Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel’s plans to build a 18.8Mt/yr cement plant in connection to a new steel plant to be established at Mahakalpara in the state’s Kendrapara district. The project will have a total investment of around US$13.5bn, according to the Hindu newspaper. Once operational both the cement and steel plant will be the largest of their type in the country. The company plans to carry out the project in phases, for completion by the late 2020s.

RHI Magnesita opens new Indian research and development centre amid capacity expansion drive

India: RHI Magnesita has opened its new Indian regional research and development centre. The centre is its fifth of its kind globally, and joins existing facilities in Austria, Brazil, China and the US.

The company is in the process of implementing a refractory production capacity expansion plan worth a total of US$53.8m. The plan consists of upgrades to its Bhiwadi plant in Rajasthan, Cuttack plant in Odisha and Vizag plant in Andhra Pradesh. It has already completed US$6.72-worth of the work with a 30% expansion at the Vizag plant. The company says that the remaining upgrades consist of both the establishment of new lines and the automation of existing ones.

RHI Magnesita India managing director and chief executive officer Parmod Sagar said “The centre will help us to better understand local market needs and to react faster to customer requirements. This is a world-class facility that will work closely with our global research and development network for local raw materials development, will provide solutions support for customer’s performance improvement projects and will support local manufacturing in the three India plants.”

Dalmia Cement to invest US$136m in remaining eastern India cement capacity expansions

India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement plans to increase its installed cement production capacity in Eastern India by a further 4.8Mt/yr. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that its remaining planned upgrades in the region consist of a 2.3Mt/yr capacity expansion at a grinding plant in Odisha and a 2.5Mt/yr capacity expansion at a grinding plant in Bihar. The Odisha upgrade is scheduled for commissioning in mid-2021 and the Bihar upgrade is scheduled for commissioning in 2023. When both completed, the new lines will increase the producer’s cement capacity to 40Mt/yr.

The company says that it plans to announce further capital expenditure (capex) investments. It said that its subsidiary Murli Industries requires US$47.7 - 54.5m-worth of capex spending. It acquired the company, based in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, in the 2021 financial year. Managing director Puneet Dalmia said that the company would wait for greater economic certainty before launching the next round of expenditure. He said that the company’s aim is to become a national producer.

Shree Cement commences production at Cuttack grinding plant

India: Shree Cement has commenced commercial production at its 3.0Mt/yr Cuttack grinding plant in Athagarh Tehsil, Odisha. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the company officially launched the new plant on 15 March 2021.

Police raid Jagatpur fake cement operation

24 February 2021

India: Odisha police have successfully shut down a fake cement operation in Jagatpur. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that the unit was producing fake cement using various raw materials including marble dust and artificial colours. The unit had reportedly been in operation since as early as 2015.

Assistant police commissioner Amarendra Panda said, “The factory and the go-down have been sealed. The investigation is on to ascertain since when the factory was operational, the source of raw materials and the destinations or shops where the products were supplied. It is also being ascertained whether the owner of the unit is part of a racket engaged in manufacturing adulterated cement.” This is the third fake cement unit uncovered in the city since late 2020.

Dalmia Cement completes new school building in Barunia

12 February 2021

India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has inaugurated a new school building that it has built in Barunia, Odisha. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that the work was part of a US$7690 project which also included the refurbishment of two existing classrooms.

Projects executive directorRamawatar Sharma said, "The access to quality education is a basic human right. As a company, we have always believed in providing opportunities to the best of our capacity and helped in laying the foundation for a better life for everyone. We are optimistic that with the renovation of the school infrastructure, the students will feel motivated to attend classes and continue working towards building a better future for them."

Haridaspur residents protest lack of local jobs outside Ramco Cements grinding plant in Odisha

21 January 2021

India: Residents of Haridaspur in Jajpur District, Odisha, launched a protest on 20 January 2020 outside Ramco Cement’s 0.9Mt/yr Haridaspur grinding plant. The New Indian Express has reported that the people allege that the company has fail to delivered promised local jobs. They also accuse it of failing to provide concrete roads, drinking water, healthcare and lighting. The company said that it has yet to receive a memorandum of the protestors’ request.

Ramco Cements commissioned the Haridaspur grinding plant in late 2020.

Odisha government approves Shiva Cement’s expansion plans

07 January 2021

India: The government of India has granted licences to JSW Cement subsidiary Shiva Cement for the expansion of its cement plants in the state. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that the company has received approval for an integrated capacity expansion of 1.1Mt/yr and a clinker capacity expansion of 1.3Mt/yr.

The state government approved a total of US$730m-worth of planned investments in various industries on 6 January 2020.

Indian police raid fake cement bagging operation

30 December 2020

India: Jagatpur police have raided a counterfeit cement bagging facility in Jagatpur Industrial Estate, Cuttack. Odisha TV News has reported that the operation is suspected of using marble dust, small amounts of white cement and artificial colouring in the fake product. Large amounts of empty packaging from several different cement brands were recovered in the raid. The police made one arrest and seized a vehicle.
