Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d'Algérie (GICA) has obtained a certificate of conformity with European standards (CE) for three types of cement. The certification should allow the company to export more products to Europe, according to the Expression newspaper. It applies to its Gica Moudhad and Gica Béton products. The move follows similar certification of products with the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) from the company’s Aïn El Kebira plant in July 2021. At the same time the Minister of Industry said it was helping the group with its export strategy.

In 2021 GICA exported 2.25Mt of cement to countries including the Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Senegal , Cameroon, Benin,  Guinea, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and a number of European countries.

Peru: Cement production grew by 7% year-on-year to 6.4Mt in the first half of 2022 from 6Mt in the same period in 2020. Data from the Association of Cement Producers (ASOCEM) shows that cement exports rose by 15% to 98,000t and clinker exports fell by 8% to 289,000t. Cement and clinker imports fell by 69% to 150,000t and 40% to 549,000t respectively.

Ecuador: Holcim Ecuador has despatched its first export shipment of bulk cement to the Peruvian market. The volume of this shipment was 32,700t and it was loaded in 2t Big Bags. Holcim Ecuador says that it invested US$2.2m in establishing the infrastructure to realise this achievement.

Peru: Cementos Pacasmayo recorded consolidated sales of US$140m in the first quarter of 2022, up by 13% year-on-year from US$124m in the first quarter of 2021. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) also rose, by 21% year-on-year to US$128m from US$105m. The company said that its strong revenue generation enabled earnings growth despite cost increases. Its reliance on imported clinker to meet growing demand increased Cementos Pacasmayo’s exposure to the effects of inflation.

During the quarter, Cementos Pacasmayo produced 882,000t of cement across its three facilities, down by 4.4% year-on-year. The plants’ clinker production rose by 6.7% to 568Mt from 532Mt in the first quarter of 2021.

Peru: Unacem’s sales were US$655m in 2021, up by 43% year-on-year from US$458m in 2020. It sold US$598m-worth of cement, up by 41% year-on-year from US$425m-worth, and exported US$30.3m of clinker, up by 35% year-on-year from US$22.5m-worth.

The producer said “2020 and 2021 have been years of great challenges for the world and our country because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this context, the company implemented a plan of measures that has allowed it to cope with this crisis, having as a fundamental pillar ensuring the safety and health of its employees, the sustainability of the company and all its shareholders. Likewise, the Peruvian government continues to take the necessary actions to mitigate the effects of the third wave of Covid-19 as well as to safeguard the payment chain of companies.”

Peru: The Ministry of Labour and Employment Promotion has initiated talks with cement producers, exporters and unions with a view to changing the standard national cement bag weight. The ministry recognised the 42.5kg/bag standard as a historical anachronism and unsafe. The Federation of Civil Construction Workers (FTCCP) has reported lower back injury as the main cause of ‘desertion of construction site.’ Beside the risk of injury, the standard has allegedly contributed to discrimination against older builders, because site managers often consider even those well below the state early retirement age of 55 to beunfit. The union has argued that 25kg bags would reduce the risk of harm to quality of life to 15%, while 15kg bags would entail a risk of just 5%.

Standards authority Produce will now hold a round table with stakeholders to review the possibility of a 41% weight reduction to the international standard of 25kg. Federation of Cement and Ready-Mix Workers of Peru (FETRACEPPE) general secretary Luis Gilvonio said that this will not solve problems overnight: where firms start instructing workers to carry two bags at a time, their net load will have increased. As such, he argued for continued awareness-raising alongside the law change.

Bagged cement accounted for 70% of Peruvian producers’ cement sales in 2021.

Peru: Cementos Pacasmayo recorded full-year sales of US$519m in 2021, up by 49% year-on-year from US$348m in 2020. Sales exceeded pre-Covid levels of US$373m in 2019 by 39%. The company’s profit for the year was US$41m, more than double its profit of US$15.5m in 2020 and up by 16% from US$35.4m in 2019.

The Semana Económica newspaper has reported that Cementos Pacasmayo aims to maintain its 2021 full-year cement sales volumes in 2022. The company is in the process of a US$70m, 600,000t/yr clinker capacity expansion in order to increase its clinker capacity to 100% of its grinding capacity, from 61% currently. This will eliminate the producer’s reliance on clinker imports.

Peru: Cement production grew by 41% year-on-year to 12.9Mt in 2021 from 9.14Mt in 2020. Data from the Association of Cement Producers (ASOCEM) shows that cement and clinker exports increased by 43% to 205,000t and by 128% to 707,000t respectively. Cement and clinker imports rose by 23% to 884,000t and 131% to 1.55Mt respectively. In December 2021 94% of cement imports came from Vietnam and the majority of clinker imports came from South Korea. ASOCEM added that the recovery of local cement despatch levels from July 2020 was a sign that the market had recovered after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Peru: FLSmidth has secured a contract for the supply of a new pyro line for Cementos Pacasmayo’s Pacasmayo cement plant near Lima. The new line will give the plant an additional production capacity of 0.6Mt/yr. The supplier says that it plans to install a Cross-Bar cooler, low-NO_x calciner, Jetflex burner, equipment for dosing and feeding and process automation. FLSmidth says that the upgrade will reduce the plant’s energy consumption and open new opportunities for the use of alternative fuel (AF).

FLSmidth’s head of projects and upgrades and senior vice president Anders Josefsen said “We are very excited to work with Cementos Pacasmayo on this project – not only on growing the business, but doing it in a sustainable way. The new line will be equipped with a state-of-the-art pyro system including several of our MissionZero solutions. With this, Pacasmayo makes a significant investment in future-proofing its production.” He added “The Pacasmayo project is a prime example of our capabilities within process design: ensuring the integration to an existing plant, while also demonstrating our ability to deliver equipment that meets demands for energy and fuel efficiency.”

Peru: Germany-based Christian Pfeiffer is supplying grinding and separation equipment for Cementos Inka’s grinding plant project near Pisco. A 4.2m diameter 3500KW mill and a QDK 143-Z type separator with gas recirculation, to help dry the raw material without hot gases, are being provided. Cementos Inka’s 0.7Mt/yr plant was previously reported to have a budget of US$20m.
