Kavkazcement to upgrade Kavkaz cement plant in 2021 - 2022 shutdown

27 October 2021

Russia: Kavkazcement has announced that it will use its Kavkaz cement plant's annual shutdown in the winter of 2021 - 2022 to upgrade the plant's raw materials mills and kiln lines. The Eurocement subsidiary plans to spend US$7.14m on the work, which also includes the replacement of burners in kilns 2 and 4 and the installation of new drying drums, compressors and electrostatic precipitators. The upgrade will increase the 3Mt/yr plant's cement capacity by 10% and its clinker capacity by 30%. Managing director Vladimir Sokoltsov said that the upgrade focused on minimising the plant's environmental impacts.

Sokoltsov said “We will prepare the plant for the high construction season in April 2022. Our products are used in the construction of the largest industrial, transport and municipalinfrastructure in southern Russia." He continued "We understand that the quality of life of a large number of people depends on the pace of our work.”

Krasnoyarsk Cement installs emissions monitoring system at Krasnoyarsk cement plant

15 October 2021

Russia: Krasnoyarsk Cement has installed a continuous monitoring system for emission control at its Krasnoyarsk cement plant. It carried out the upgrade under the government’s national Ecology project. The system will transmit daily average emissions data to the Krasnoyarsk Territory Ministry of Ecology and Nature Management. Members of the public will be able to access the submissions on the ministry’s website.

Managing Director Dmitry Kireev said “According to the current legislation, the installation was supposed to start working before 31 December 2028. However, due to the fact that the enterprise is located within the city, we voluntarily assumed increased obligations and launched online monitoring of emissions ahead of schedule."

Holcim Russia envisions 15% emissions reduction by 2030 and carbon neutral cement production by 2050

05 October 2021

Russia: Holcim Russia has committed to realising a 15% CO2 emissions reduction in its cement production between 2019 and 2030 to 475kg/t from 561kg/t. It plans to further reduce its cement’s CO2 emissions to 453kg/t by 2050, and to implement further measures to ensure its net carbon neutrality at that time.

Corporate relations director Vitaly Bogachenko said “The company's goal is to drastically reduce carbon emissions, and there are two working solutions for this. The first is the use of alternative fuels (AF) obtained from different types of waste: residues of municipal solid waste after sorting and extraction of all useful fractions from them, used tyres and others. The presence of biomass in them makes such fuels carbon neutral, so emissions during production are significantly reduced. The second solution is to replace carbon intensive raw materials. For example, instead of limestone, we use slags. The 'recipe' for cement is completely different: thanks to the new composition and the lower temperature during the firing process, the carbon footprint in the production of cement is reduced.”
