India: Shree Cement has received approval from the state government of Karnataka for its planned US$81.5m Doddaballapur cement grinding and bagging plant. The Hindu newspaper has reported that, when operational, the plant will employ 300 local people.

India: Shree Cement has commenced commercial production at its 3.0Mt/yr Cuttack grinding plant in Athagarh Tehsil, Odisha. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the company officially launched the new plant on 15 March 2021.

India: ISGEC Heavy Engineering has won a contract for a double waste heat recovery (WHR) unit installation at Shree Cement’s Raipur cement plant. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that the supplier will install one unit on the plant’s pre-heater exhaust, and the other on the 10,500t/day kiln’s cooler exhaust.

Industrial and green energy boilers business head Vinod Luthra said, “This is indeed a very prestigious order for us and we thank Shree Cement for once again showing confidence in ISGEC's capabilities. This is the second project that ISGEC will be successfully setting up for Shree Cement."

India: Shree Cement has recorded consolidated net sales of US$1.27bn in the first nine months of its 2021 financial year (1 April 2020 – 31 March 2021), down by 2% year-on-year from US$1.29bn in the corresponding period of its 2019 financial year. The group’s net profit increased by 52% to US$204m from US$138m.

The company is currently working on a 6Mt/yr addition to its grinding capacity, consisting of two new grinding plants, in Athagarh Tehsil, Odisha, and Patas, Maharashtra. The facilities had been scheduled for completion in the first half of the 2021 financial year.

India: Shree Cement plans to mark Vijay Diwas, the Indian commemoration day for the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, with free donations of cement for the families of armed forces personnel who died in battle between 1999 and 2019. Under the Naman scheme, the family or the next of kin of a deceased veteran will be given free cement to build a house on a plot of land up to around 370m², according to the Times of India newspaper. The cement can be obtained in person from any of Shree Cement's manufacturing facilities spread across India.

India: Shree Cement has ordered two vertical roller (VR) mills from Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer for the upcoming clinker line at its Raipur cement plant in Chhattisgarh. The supplier says that one of the mills will grind raw materials and the other will grind coal.

A MVR 6000 R-6 type raw mill will grind 800t/hr of raw material and have a drive power of 8700kW. Gebr. Pfeiffer said, “The grinding rollers of this mill can be equipped with roller tires for raw meal grinding as well as for cement grinding, provided that they have been designed according to the same force module. This saves money, because the identical components of rollers, tensioning system, roller arms, etc. mean that customers can reduce their spare parts inventory, since the same spare parts can be used for a raw meal mill and for a cement mill.” The mill will be equipped with an SLS 6000 VR high-efficiency classifier.

A MPS 2800 BK type mill will be used to grind coal with a capacity of 28t/hr, a drive power of 720kW and be “equipped with the latest design of the integrated SLS 2900 BK high-efficiency classifier optimised for MPS mills.”

The supplier said, “While the core components of the mills as well as the drive units will be supplied by Gebr. Pfeiffer from Europe, the Indian subsidiary Gebr. Pfeiffer (India) will provide components such as the mill and classifier housings, the steel foundation parts as well as internal parts of the classifiers.”

India: Shree Cement has announced that it plans to establish a US$135m clinker production unit in the state of Chhattisgarh. The company has said that the plant will become operational in mid-2022.

India: Shree Cement has signed a sponsorship deal with East Bengal Kolkata, one of two Kolkata, West Bengal-based football teams that compete in the I-League, the top flight of Indian football. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the company has promised to let the club retain its ‘iconic red-and-yellow jersey’ and crest.

India: Low demand for power due to the 25 March 2020 – 31 August 2020 nationwide coronavirus lockdown has caused Shree Cement to suspend some of its power plant operations due to a lack of buyers. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that 300MW of Shree Cement’s 650MW power generation capacity produces power for sale to other users on the national grid. Joint managing director Prashant Bangur said, “Owing to the lockdown, power demand was impacted and some of our power capacities were shut. Power demand has not completely recovered yet. Right now, power plants are shut because there is no demand; viability is the second part.”

The first stage of lifting lockdown was announced on 1 June 2020.

India: Shree Cement recorded a profit of US$49.6m between 1 April 2020 and 30 June 2020, up by 2.1% year-on-year from US$48.6m in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Sales fell by 23% to US$311m from US$406m due to the impacts of the coronavirus lockdown, which ended during the quarter, on cement demand.
