Sementsverksmidjan cement terminal spills dust on town
08 January 2021Iceland: HeildelbergCement subsidiary Sementsverksmidjan has apologised for an incident which caused cement dust to be released from a silo at its terminal in Akranes. An overflow during loading caused the dust to settle on nearby houses. The company collaborated with fire services, utilities companies and residents to tidy up.
The company said, “The incident yesterday was an accident which did not comply with the policy and will of the company or its owners. The company therefore apologises to all those who suffered inconvenience and will do everything in its power to ensure that accidents of this kind do not recur.”
Ivory Coast: LafargeHolcim Côte d'Ivoire commissioned a new clinker discharge equipment at its Abidjan cement plant in June 2020. Aumund France supplied the equipment. It consists of a 75,000t-capacity silo, two Aumund KZB pan conveyors with ten gravity discharge gates, four Aumund GF belt conveyors and a dedusting system comprising five filters, as well as the complete electrics and automation package for the new discharge system. The supplier says that it also supervised installation and commissioning of the equipment.
Australia: Adbri subsidiary Cockburn Cement has approved a US$152m upgrade to its Kwinana grinding plant in Western Australia. It says the investment will consolidate the cement operations at its Kwinana site. At present clinker is transported by truck from the Kwinana Bulk Terminal to cement mills at both the Kwinana grinding plant and the company’s integrated plant at Munster. It will increase its production capacity to 1.5Mt/yr from 1.1Mt/yr at present. The project is expected to save the company US$15m/yr due to better energy, transport and maintenance efficiency when the plant is commissioned by mid-2023. The producer will fund the investment through existing debt facilities.
The upgrade project includes: a bulk materials conveyor linking the Kwinana Bulk Terminal (KBT) facility to a new 110,000t clinker storage shed, incorporating an automated reclaim system, to eliminate road transport and minimise clinker handling using mobile equipment; a slag feed system that will handle granulated blast furnace slag and additives such as gypsum and limestone; a ball mill circuit with the installation of two new cement mills capable of grinding slag and clinker; and a new 21,000t finished product storage, truck loading and weighbridge infrastructure for storage and despatch.
Cemenco commissions cement plant
16 January 2020Liberia: HeidelbergCement subsidiary Cemenco has commissioned a 0.3Mt/yr cement plant in Liberia following an investment of US$14m. The Daily Observer newspaper has reported that the plant is equipped with a 2000t silo, bulk truck unloading equipment and a bagging line, in addition to four Samson Eco Hoppers for dust-free delivery in the Port of Monrovia. Cemenco already operates a 0.8Mt/yr grinding plant on Bushroda Island in Monrovia.
Mick George Concrete helps build sustainable roads
23 December 2019UK: Mick George Concrete has announced a contract with Highways England for the construction of ancillary features such as kerbs, drains and mass fill usages on the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge in early 2020. The project will utilise 500m3 of Cemfree concrete from DB Group (Holdings) ltd., which can be produced releasing just 20% of the CO2 of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The value of the project, to which Mick George Concrete has dedicated a 100t silo for Cemfree storage, is Euro1.76bn.
Pakistan: Gharibwal Cement has blamed reduced exports due to tensions on the Pakistan-Indian border and rising input costs for a reduction in its sales. Its net sales fell by 3% year-on-year to US$72.3m in the year to 30 June 2019 from US$74.5m in the same period in 2018. Its cement dispatches fell by 11.4% to 1.68Mt from 1.89Mt. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 6.5% to US$18.7m from US$20m.
The cement producer said that work on a new 0.15Mt clinker silo is in progress and this is expected to be completed by June 2020. It is also building a rainwater reservoir to capture precipitation for use in the production process. The company operates a 2.1Mt/yr integrated plant at Ismailwal in Punjab Province.
McInnis Cement closes US$380m refinancing deal
18 July 2019Canada: McInnis Cement has closed a US$380m refinancing deal. US$230m will be provided by an increase McInnis Cement’s senior loan from a syndicate of 11 Canadian and international banks and the remaining US$150m comes in the form of a loan by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and Beaudier. This refinancing also makes it possible to repay a bridge loan granted by BlackRock in 2016.
The cement producer also provided details on various projects it is undertaking. Two new cement silos will be built at the company’s integrated cement plant at Port-Daniel–Gascons. Nearly 200 workers will be mobilized on the site during the peak construction period of the two silos, during the autumn of 2019.
Its Bronx Terminal in New York, US has doubled its loading capacity for customers. A second truck-loading lane is now fully operational. A new 40,000t warehouse is currently under construction at its Providence Terminal in Rhode Island, US bringing the total storage capacity to 75,000t. A new truck-loading lane will also be added and commissioned in time for the 2020 spring construction season. McInnis Cement has also confirmed the charter of the NACC New Yorker, a 24,000t self-unloading vessel, in conjunction with Nova Marina Carriers. It will join other vessels in its fleet including the NACC Quebec (14,000t), the Cielo di Gaspesie (35,000t) and the Resolute unloading barge.
UK: Hanson Cement says that the first phase of a Euro27m upgrade project to its integrated Padeswood plant in Wales has been completed. The upgrade has included the installation of a 0.65Mt/yr cement grinding mill as well as enhancements to production capacity and efficiency gains. The plant can now, with the aid of existing ball mills, match cement grinding with its kiln capacity.
“The nearly new Loesche vertical roller mill, housed in a 34m-high building, started its life at a grinding plant in Bilbao. It had only 7000 operational hours on the clock and was in excellent condition. After dismantling it piece by piece, specialist contractors moved it to the UK where it was reassembled on site at Padeswood,” said Jim Claydon, Hanson UK cement managing director.
Other improvements at the site include the installation of three new rail cement silos that have been installed alongside the existing railhead. This will allow up to three trains a week to be loaded for deliveries to Hanson depots in London, Bristol or Glasgow. The new silos will reduce the transportation of cement produced at Padeswood to customers by road. In addition to the increase in grinding capacity, other recent capital investment at Padeswood include the installation of a plastic packing machine, and the re-commissioning of an existing paper packaging machine and an upgrade in the capability to use recycled paper and plastics as fuel.
Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement has commissioned a new 6000t silo at its Shimizu termimal in Shizuoka. Following the upgrade, the unit now has three silos. The new silo will be used to support infrastructure projects, including expansions to the Shinkansen high-speed railway network.
Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement has completed a new cement silo at its Kochi plant. The upgrade is part of a long-term plan to focus on exports to Southeast Asia. The cement producer intends to establish an overseas business presence outside of Japan.
