Ireland: Ecocem Group has appointed John Reddy as Group Quality and Innovation Application Manager. In the new role he will lead a growing technical team across Europe including Ireland, UK, Sweden, Benelux and France. He is tasked with developing the product pipeline for the group and assisting with product commercialisation across Europe.
Conor O’Riain, Group Managing Director said, “His undeniable commitment to Ecocem and the cement industry is unquestionable and this new role signifies the growth of Ecocem products across Europe. His appointment marks his advocacy to improving the standard of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) cement production across the industry”.
Reddy joined Ecocem Ireland in 2004 and has worked for the group in various technical roles. He is a chartered engineer and is a graduate of Civil Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and holds an MSc in Advanced Concrete Technology from Queens University, Belfast. His master’s thesis ‘Investigating the thermal activation of GGBS concrete’ was published at the 9th International Concrete Conference and subsequently won the Irish Concrete Society, Sean DeCourcy student award in 2017.
UK: Welding Alloys says that it has carried out maintenance on a vertical roller mill at HeidelbergCement subsidiary Hanson’s 1.0Mt/yr Purfleet slag plant in Essex, repairing the mill’s Loesche 46 2+2S grinding table and rollers. The company said that the mill, which had ground 3500t of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), was “in urgent need of refurbishment.” Following a wear audit, Welding Alloys took the grinding components back to the profile template using its Integra Wire Mill products.
The group said that “both companies overcame the challenges of completing the project within the limited shutdown period while complying with the Covid-19 lockdown measures.”
Holcim US announces new blended cements branding
28 September 2020US: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim US has rebranded its blended cement and supplementary cementitious materials range as Envirocore. Envirocore products include OneCem Portland limestone cement, MaxCem blended cement and NewCem slag cement.
The company noted that the partial substitution of cement with supplementary cementitious materials “not only results in more durable, high-performance concrete, but also lowers energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions are reduced by approximately 800,000kg/t of clinker replaced.” It also called on consumers to “adopt solutions that lower carbon emissions.”
Egypt: Suez Cement subsidiary Ready Mix Beton says that it has secured a contract for the supply of concrete for the construction of two new monorail lines projects. Due to begin in late-2020, the contract covers the construction of a monorail line between Cairo and the New Administrative Capital and another between 6 October City and Giza. The company says that it will use Suez Cement’s CEM III/A ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement to produce concrete for the 96km monorail network.
Suez Cement said, “CEM III/A cement is highly recommended when building thick concrete supports and massive structures because its hydration temperature of less than 210kJ/kg reduces cracking compared with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) when the applied concrete is subjected to dual exposure to sulphates and chloride ions, as happens in coastal areas.”
India: The Odisha State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA) has approved two cement and slag grinding plant projects in Odisha. It has granted JSW Cement permission for an upgrade to its upcoming 1.2Mt/yr Kalinga Nagar, Odisha slag cement grinding plant that will increase the finished plant’s capacity to 2.4Mt/yr at an additional investment cost of US$359,000. JSW Cement restarted work on the facility, which will grind Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), in September 2018 after suspending the project due to leasing issues in 2016.
Sagar Cements subsidiary Jajpur Cements has also received clearance from the SLSWCA for the construction of a 1.5Mt/yr grinding plant on the site of the existing 0.5Mt/yr Jajpur Cements grinding plant in the Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur District, Odisha. The project, valued by the company at US$44m, is scheduled for completion in March 2021. Sagar Cements acquired Jajpur Cements on 7 May 2019 for US$16m.
GM Iron & Steel Company reveals 0.4Mt/yr Dhenkanal slag cement grinding plant plans
03 September 2020India: GM Iron & Steel Company Limited has published plans for the construction of a 0.4Mt/yr slag cement grinding plant in Dhenkanal, Odisha. United News of India has reported that the plant is part of an upcoming construction materials complex, including a 46MW captive power plant, that will cost US$82.7m, according to the company.
India: The Bureau of Indian Standards has granted a licence to Counto Microfine Products (CMP), a joint venture of Ambuja Cements and medical company Alcon Group, for the production of micro-fine Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement. The Times of India newspaper has reported that CMP operates a grinding plant in the state of Goa.
Belgorodsky Cement produces new slag cement
26 June 2020Russia: Eurocement subsidiary Belgorodsky Cement has announced the start of commercial production of a new CEM-III slag Portland cement. The company says that the cement is highly water and frost resistant and suitable for use in the construction of massive ground and underground structures. Belgorodsky Cement director general Eduard Androsov said, “We offer our customers an individual approach to solving construction problems and guarantee a stable supply of high quality products in the required volumes and within strictly defined deadlines.”
Russia: Iskitimcement has announced the beginning of CEM-II ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) cement at its Iskitimcement plant in Novosibirsk Oblast. Regional Weekly News has reported that the cement will be used in road base concrete production and soil reinforcement. Iskitimcement says that the cement has high frost, abrasion and impact resistance and strength of over 5.5MPa. It will sell the cement, the seventh type produced at the plant, in 25kg, 50kg and 1t bags.
Russia: Sibtsem Holding subsidiary Topkinsky Cement has launched three new cement products: a CEM-III slag Portland cement for the construction of monolithic large-scale concrete and reinforced concrete structures; a sulphate-resistant CEM-I ordinary Portland cement for the construction of underground and underwater concrete and reinforced concrete structures, with corrosion resistance against sulphates; and a CEM-II special Portland cement for the manufacture of concrete foundations for roads. The producer has also issued a compliance declaration for the CEM-II special Portland cement in accordance with Eurasian Customs Union (EACU) road safety regulations.
Topkinsky Cement managing director Alexey Ospelnikov said, “The expansion of the product range is based on the needs of the market. Certification of new types of cement will expand the capabilities of the plant’s existing partners and attract new ones.”
High-importance infrastructure projects and the development of the transport network have continued in many regions throughout the coronavirus outbreak. Topkinsky Cement said that it would continue to supply cement suited to the needs of consumers.
