Oficemen blames falling exports on electricity and CO2 price

Spain: Oficemen the Spanish cement association has blamed falling cement exports in 2018 on rising electricity and CO2 emissions prices. The association said the European Union CO2 price tripled to Euro24.60/t at the end of 2018 from Euro7.80/t at the start of the year, with an average price of Euro16.00/t of cement. Exports fell by 12% year-on-year to 8.1Mt in the 11 months of the end of November 2018. Cement consumption grew by 8% year-on-year to 13.4Mt in 2018. It forecasts growth of 3 – 6% in 2019.

Cementos Molins suffers from markets in Latin America in 2018

Spain: Cementos Molins’ turnover fell by 8.9% year-on-year to Euro588m in 2018 from Euro646m. It blamed the falling sales on currency depreciation in Argentina and a decrease in sales in Mexico. Its net income decreased by 4.2% to Euro85.3m from Euro89.1m. Its cement sales volumes rose by 7.5% to 6.05Mt from 5.6Mt but its concrete sales volumes reduced by 4.5% to 1.5Mm3 from 1.58Mm3. Spain remained the group’s biggest sales territory and these rose by 11.1% to Euro260m.

Jah Oil says it has enough cement to supply the Gambia

The Gambia: Sherif Faye, the operations manager of Jah Oil, says that the company has enough cement to supply The Gambia. He made the comment at a press event held in response to public outcry over a local cement shortage, according to the Point newspaper. The company has experienced delays to its inbound shipments due to poor weather in Europe. However, he confirmed that two ships carrying cement had recently arrived in the country.

The subsidiary of Jah Group sells its Tiger Cement 42.5 grade brand product in 50kg bags. The cement is imported from Spain and Algeria and bagged locally. Jah Oil has a bagging capacity of 108,000 bags/day.

FYM-HeidelbergCement to invest Euro2.5m at Port of Malaga

Spain: FYM-HeidelbergCement plans to invest Euro2.5m in a new 4900m2 plot at the Port of Malaga. The company will use the unit to export cement and clinker, according to the La Opinión de Málaga newspaper. At present the cement producer exports 0.5Mt/yr of clinker to markets in Africa, South America and Europe. FYM-HeidelbergCement operates an integrated cement plant in Malaga.

Local government considers licence for cement terminal at Mallorca

11 February 2019

Spain: The local council in Alcudia, Mallorca is considering a licence application for the construction of a 65,000t cement terminal at its port. The application follows the end of a public consultation period, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin newspaper. The unit plans to have a capacity of at least 65,000t for the four years of its operation and then it will rise to 90,000t. It will use a pneumatic conveying system to minimise dust pollution emissions.

The Balearic Ports Authority previously gave its authorisation to the project in 2018 but it has faced opposition from environmental protestors. Cemex announced in late 2018 that it intended to stop production at its Lloseta cement plant on the island.

LafargeHolcim España to invest Euro4m in Sagunto cement plant

Spain: LafargeHolcim España plans to spend Euro4m on upgrades to its Sagunto cement plant, according to the Las Provincias newspaper. The work will include automating the laboratory, adding a new control system for the plant, making environmental changes, improving lighting and acoustics and remodelling the unit’s white cement line.

ACICO Cement orders mill from Cemengal

Kuwait: ACICO Cement has ordered a second cement grinding mill from Spain’s Cemengal. The main equipment to be included in the contract includes a 5200 Kws ball mill with all the peripheral equipment from Cemengal and a fourth generation classifier from Magotteaux XP4i-130 for high strength cements. The projected grinding capacity will be 1Mt/yr of cement and the plant will be commissioned within the first half of 2020.

The project scope will include full engineering and complete supply of mechanical, process, electrical and automation equipment as well as the steel manufacturing from the raw materials handling areas up to the cement silos discharge. Site supervision, training and& commissioning will also be provided by Cemengal.

Cemengal confirmed as mill supplier for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas

29 January 2019

Chile: Spain’s Cemengal has been confirmed as the supplier of a mill for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas. The unit will use a Plug & Grind Xtreme modular grinding plant. The contract includes all the mechanical, electrical and automation equipment required for a 0.3Mt/yr modular ball mill and a classifier. Cemengal will deliver the mill by the end of 2019 to allow first cement and commissioning of the plant in the first quarter of 2020.

Tudela Veguín buys lime producer Caleras de San Cucao

25 January 2019

Spain: Cementos Tudela Veguín has purchased a full stake in Caleras de San Cucao, a lime producer based in Asturias, according to the La Nueva España newspaper. No value for the acquisition has been disclosed. The company operates a lime plant at Llanera and it runs two lime quarries at Agüera and Las Regueras. Cementos Tudela Veguín has a lime production capacity of 0.6Mt/yr from its Tudela Veguín plant in Oviedo.

LafargeHolcim España restores land at Jerez plant’s quarry

Spain: LafargeHolcim España has restored land at a quarry near its Jerez de la Frontera cement plant in Cadiz. As part of biodiversity improvement project it has recovered 45 hectares of land and planted around 35,000 trees.
