Alan Svaiter appointed new head of Votorantim Cimentos España
12 September 2018Spain: Votorantim Group has appointed Alan Svaiter as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Votorantim Cimentos España. He succeeds Jorge Wagner, who has been promoted to the role of CEO of Votorantim Cimentos Europe, Asia and Africa. In his new position Svaiter heads a subsidiary running four cement plants, two mills, 29 concrete plants, eight aggregate operations and one mortar plant. He also directs a team of more than 500 people.
Svaiter, a Brazilian national, joined Votorantim Group in 2008. After leading the logistics of its cement division for two years he was appointed the director of Engemix, the company’s concrete business in Brazil. In 2014 he became director of the supply chain of the cement group for the entire Brazilian market.
Svaiter, a production engineer trained at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, holds a master's degree from the INSEAD business school. He started his professional career working for the Ambev brewery before joining the mining company Vale.
Spain: Cemex España has submitted a proposal to the local government to extract a total of 15Mt of limestone from its Can Negret quarry near to its Lloseta cement plant in Majorca. The proposal will run until 2032, according to the Ultima Hora newspaper. The company was previously granted a concession at the quarry in 1982.
Spain: Cementos Tudela Veguín has bid for a concession at the El Musel section of the Port of Gijón. The cement producer plans to build a dedicated terminal at the site, according to La Nueva España newspaper. Cementos Tudela Veguín has used the northern extension of the port since 2012. It processed 1.04Mt of cement and clinker at the site in 2017.
Spain: LafargeHolcim España has appointed Carmen Díaz as its commercial director. Díaz was previously the general manager of the group’s ReadySet Mix digital venture. She succeeds Simón Kronenberg in the post who has moved on to a new role with the group in Switzerland.
Díaz is a chemical engineer from the University of Oviedo and she also holds an MBA. She joined LafargeHolcim in 2002 and has held various roles including Area Manager in Madrid and the Vice President of Commercial Performance and Head of Ready Mix Commercial in France.
Spain: Cementos Molins has allocated Euro200m towards dismantling old production lines at its Sant Vicenç dels Horts plant near Barcelona. Kilns, towers, silos and obsolete buildings will be removed as part of the project, according to the La Vanguardia newspaper. The plant operates a single 1.4Mt/yr production line that was commissioned in 2010.
Spain: LafargeHolcim has chosen its Carboneras cement plant in Almeria as a refrence training centre for its European operations. The plant was selected due to its port and high level of staff expertise amongst other reasons. A group of LafargeHolcim engineers from Poland, France, the UK, Romania, Croatia, Greece and Serbia have all recently visited the site for a training course.
Peru: Invercem plans buy equipment for a 0.25Mt/yr cement grinding plant in August 2018. The president of the company, Victor de la Torre, will travel to Spain to finalise the deal, according to the Gestión newspaper. Previously the project was scheduled to start in late 2017. Invercem imports cement from HeidelbergCement at Salaverry near Trujillo. It then bags and sells it locally under the Qhuna brand.
Spain: FYM, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, is facing a potential legal battle to expand the quarry at its La Araña cement plant near Malaga. It has applied to the local government for a compulsory order to buy land at the site, according to the Diario Sur newspaper. FYM says that it has the authorisation to use up to 176 hectares near its plant for mineral extraction but that it is only using 43 hectares at present. The agreement in place allows the cement producer to buy land on a compulsory basis if an agreement can’t be reached with the land owners. However, the current land owner and FYM have disagreed over the price.
Spain: The Port of Alicante is undergoing a Euro3m upgrade to build a new dock that can support larger vessels. Once completed the upgrade will allow ships with a length of up to 240m to dock, according to the Diario Informacion newspaper. Previously the port could only support ships of up to 165m. The site processes large volumes of cement and clinker and dust mitigation measures are also being installed.
LafargeHolcim Spain appoints Alberto del Valle as director of Human Resources and Communications
02 May 2018Spain: LafargeHolcim Spain has appointed Alberto del Valle as its director of Human Resources and Communications. Del Valle, an industrial engineer trained at the Charles III University of Madrid, holds over 15 years of experience in the construction industry. In 2008 he became the Director of Compensation and Benefits for Holcim Spain, before later becoming the Compensation and Benefits Manager Europe Region for LafargeHolcim in 2014 and the Career and Talent Manager Europe and Trading at LafargeHolcim Europe in 2016. His latest position also sees him become a member of the management committee of LafargeHolcim Spain.
