Tajikistan continues to import amid rising production
19 February 2020Tajikistan: Tajikistan continued to import a small volume of cement in 2019, despite a year-on-year increase in the production and export. The country produced 4.2Mt of cement, 0.4Mt (10.5%) more than in 2018. 20,000t of cement was imported into the country in 2019, especially white cement, which is not produced in Tajikistan.
Exports of cement rose during 2019 to 1.5Mt, at a value of US$68.1m. 980,000t were exported to Uzbekistan, 576,000t were exported to Afghanistan and 80,600t were exported to Kyrgyzstan.
Tajikistan increases production by 11%
20 January 2020Tajikistan: Tajikistan produced 4.20Mt of cement in 2019; up by 11% from 3.80Mt in 2018. Cement exports in the period rose by 11% year-on-year to 1.55Mt from 1.40Mt. 2018’s exports amounted to 0.89Mt (64%) to Uzbekistan, 0.58Mt (41%) to Afghanistan and 0.08Mt (5.8%) to Krygyzstan. Asia-Plus News has reported that tightened pollution legislation in China has driven Chinese-based producers, which accounted for over 90% of Tajik production in 2018, to relocate operations to their country’s western neighbour.
Tajikistan’s nine-month cement production exceeds 3Mt/yr
18 October 2019Tajikistan: Tajik producers produced 3.1Mt of cement in the nine months to 30 September 2019, up by 9.7% from 2.8Mt in the corresponding period of 2018. Cement producers exported a total of 1.2Mt to a value of US$54.1m. Around 0.7Mt went to Uzbekistan and 0.4Mt to Afghanistan, with most of the remaining produce going to other neighbouring countries.
Tajik cement production rises in first seven months of 2019
16 August 2019Tajikistan: About 2.33Mt of cement was produced in Tajikistan over the first seven months of 2019, according to the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies. This value is 0.21Mt higher than in January-July 2018. The country produced 3.84Mt of cement in 2018, 23% more than in 2017.
Tajikistan: Tajikistan exported nearly 0.62Mt of cement in the first five months of 2019, with average monthly cement of around 0.124Mt. This represents a significant increase compared to the recent past. In 2015 monthly exports typically averaged 42,000t.
Between 1 January and 31 May 2019, Tajikistan exported 0.346Mt of cement to Uzbekistan, 0.247Mt to Afghanistan and 27,000t to Kyrgyzstan, according to the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies. Over the same five-month period, Tajikistan made more than 0.1Mt more cement than in the same period of 2018.
Tajikistan now has 18 cement plants with a total production capacity of about 5Mt/yr, with Huaxin Gayur Cement, Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement and Huaxin Gayur Sughd Cement accounting for more than 85% of the overall volume made in the first five months of 2019.

Tajikistan: The Ministry of Industry and New Technologies says that Mohir Cement plans to build a new 0.6Mt/yr cement plant in the Jaloliddini Balkhi district of Khatlon province. The project has a budget of US$30m, according to Asia Plus. As part of the agreement with the government, the cement producer has been granted a range of tax breaks on foreign workers and the import of equipment and materials required to build the plant. Mohir Cement currently operates a 1.2Mt/yr plant with Chinese investors known as Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement.
Chinese joint ventures boost Tajik cement production
16 April 2019Tajikistan: The Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MOINT) says that Tajik-Chinese joint ventures Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement, Huaxin Gayur Cement, and Huaxin Gayur Sughd Cement accounted for nearly 85% of local cement production in the first three months of 2019. Overall production grew by 9% year-on-year to 0.84Mt from 0.75Mt in the same period in 2018, according to the Asia-Plus News Agency. Around 36% of production was exported with more than 150,000t of cement to Uzbekistan, more than 140,000t of cement to Afghanistan and nearly 12,000t of cement to Kyrgyzstan. Tajikistan has 13 cement plants with a total production capacity of 4.7Mt/yr.
Huaxin Cement grows sales by 32% to US$4.09bn in 2018
29 March 2019China: Huaxin Cement’s sales revenue rose by 32% year-on-year to US$4.09bn in 2018 from US$3.11bn in 2017. Its net profit grew by nearly 150% to US$772m from US$309m. Its cement sales volumes increased by 3% to 70.7Mt and its ready-mix concrete (RMX) sales increased by 11% to 3.56Mm3. By region is operating revenue grew in all domestic regions, except for Jiangxi.
During 2018 the cement producer completed its acquisition of Chongqing Lafarge Shui On Cantian Cement. Its Tibet Shannan Third Phase 3000t/day and Shigatse Second Phase 3000t/day project were put into operation. In total the group added 4.77Mt/yr of cement production capacity in 2018. In its future risk analysis it said that production capacity reduction in the cement industry is ‘yet to be improved and that the ‘fundamental contradiction’ of the overcapacity has not been solved.
Switzerland’s LafargeHolcim’s runs Huaxin Cement as a joint venture. The company operates almost 200 subsidiaries in nine provinces in China as well units in Tajikistan and Cambodia. It has a cement production capacity of 100Mt/yr, RMX capacity of 23.3Mm3/yr and an aggregate capacity of 25Mt/yr.
Singapore: International Cement Group is planning to build new cement plants in Central Asia, Africa and South-east Asia to complement China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The company, formerly known as Compact Metal Industries, has held a ceremony to mark its listing at the Singapore Stock Exchange, according to the Business Times Singapore newspaper.
The company holds a 65% stake in a 1.2Mt/yr cement plant in Tajikistan. This unit’s production capacity was recently upgraded to 1.35Mt/yr. In mid-2018 it said it was building a new plant in Kazakhstan. This project is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2019. In late 2018 the group said it had failed to buy a majority stake in a partially-built cement plant at Salamanga in Mozambique. In March 2019 the group agreed to buy a majority stake in Namibia’s Ohorongo Cement from Schwenk Namibia for US$104m.

14 January 2019Tajikistan: Tajikistan exported 1.44Mt of cement in 2018 with a value of US$65.4m. This marks a rise of 48% year-on-year from 0.97Mt in 2017 with a value of US$45.9m, according to the Azernews newspaper. Tajikistan exports cement to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.
