India: Orient Cement has laid the foundation stone of an expansion to its Devapur cement plant in Telangana's Mancherial District. The Hindu Online News has reported that the project will increase the plant's capacity by 60% to 8Mt/yr. Orient Cement will reportedly participate in the establishment of the nearby Belampalli skill development centre to help train local youths.

India: The government of Telangana has asked the Indian government for US$612m in funding for the planned reopening of state-owned Cement Corporation of India's Adilabad cement plant, alongside other projects. The Indian government will publish its 2023 - 2024 Union Budget in January 2023. The Times of India newspaper has reported that funding has been insufficient for the Telangana state government to realise its industrial growth plans over eight successive previous budgets.

India: Dow Jones Institutional News has reported that Adani Group is in talks with a ‘major shareholder’ of Orient Cement over a possible acquisition of the latter’s stake in the CK Birla Group company.

Orient Cement first began producing cement in Telangana in 1982, and has since spread to Karnataka and Maharashtra, with a cement production capacity of 8Mt/yr.

Orient Cement previously leased land in Maharashtra for a new grinding plant from coal-fired power plant Adani Power Maharashtra, an Adani Group subsidiary, in late 2021. Adani Group entered the cement sector following its acquisition of ACC and Ambuja Cements from Switzerland-based Holcim on 16 September 2022.

India: Sagar Cement has appointed KV Vishnu Raju as its chair. He succeeds K Thanu Pillai in the post.

Vishnu Raju is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchirapalli and he holds a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Michigan Technological University in the US. He worked as an executive director and then managing director of Raasi Cements in the 1990s. He was later on the board of Anjani Portland Cement as its chair and managing director from 1999 to 2014.

Sagar Cement operates three integrated plants and two grinding plants in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Pradesh Telangana.

India: Cement Corporation of India has called for e-tenders for its mothballed Adilabad cement plant's equipment for a sale of the plant's assets prior to its permanent closure and decommissioning. The state-owned company will receive offers until 23 May 2022 and will open bids after 120 days. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that a planned airport will take up some of the land currently occupied by the plant in Telangana.

The US$7.73m Adilabad cement plant was operational between 1982 and 1998. It reportedly has sufficient limestone reserves to continue cement production until 2122.

India: The South India Cement Manufacturers’ Association (SICMA) has joined the Confederation of Indian Industry and the associations of other Telangana industries in lobbying the state government against its proposed Grid Support Charge levy on captive power plants operating in parallel to the state grid. The Hindu Business Line News has reported that power plant operators will pay a monthly levy of US$37,100/MW, potentially from 1 April 2022.

One cement company official said “Some of the most industry-friendly states such as Odisha, Karnataka and West Bengal do not levy such charges, while Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat levy a minimal rate of US$261 – 392/MW per month.”

India: KT Rama Rao, the Industries and IT Minister, has lobbied the central government to help reopen the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) plant at Adilabad in Telangana. In a letter sent to Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Minister of Heavy Industries, Rao noted that several previous attempts had been made to reopen the unit, according to the Hindu newspaper. He added that the plant continues to hold a mining lease for 48Mt of limestone locally, has a dedicated electricity supply and has water resources. The 4Mt/yr integrated plant was originally built in 1984. Operations stopped in 1996 due to a lack of funds and the site was formerly closed in 2008.

India: The Telangana State Pollution Control Board has ordered Cement Corporation of India and Penna Cements to pay pollution fines for breaches of particulate matter restrictions at their respective cement plants at Tandur in Vikarabad district. The Times of India newspaper has reported that both companies exceeded legal limits eight times between November 2019 and July 2021. The board fined Cement Corporation of India US$3210 and Penna Cements US$4410.

India: NCL Industries is planning to expand its 2.7Mt/yr Mattapalli plant in Suryapet district, Telangana, to 3.6Mt/yr capacity at a cost of US$13.5m. The work includes the installation of vertical roller mills to replace the plant’s ball mills. Times of India newspaper has reported that the company says that it will complete the expansion by 2022.

Its plan also involves the establishment of a new 660,000t/yr grinding plant at nearby Anakapalle, at a cost of US$26.9m. The producer will invest a further US$810,000 in setting up three new ready-mix concrete plants in Hyderabad and Vizag, bringing its total number of concrete plants in the state to eight.

India: The state government of Telangana has renewed The India Cements’ mining licence for two sites in Guntur district until 2037. These are the Pondugula and Pulipadu mines, which supply the company’s Vishnupuram cement plant in Nalgonda district. The Times of India has reported that the producer first received its licence for the mines in 2000 and applied for the recent extension a decade later.
