Christian Pfeiffer celebrates women in cement

Germany: Mills supplier Christian Pfeiffer has highlighted the contributions of women working in its operations on International Women’s Day 2025. The company called its woman managers, machine operators and researchers a ‘key pillar’ of its continuing success. Christian Pfeiffer says that it is committed to fostering the personal growth and career development of women. It added these women help to inspire others to join the ‘dynamic, forward-looking’ cement sector.

Essential women in an essential industry – International Women’s Day 2024

The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) is shining a light on the essential work of women in the cement industry around the world.

To mark International Women’s Day 2024, the GCCA invited women working in its member companies around the world on their perspectives on working in global heavy industry, the importance of gender diversity, and for any career advice they can offer to other women keen to work in the cement and concrete industry. James Hardie publishes Sustainability Report 2023

10 August 2023

Australia: James Hardie has published its Sustainability Report 2023, recording its progress towards achieving its sustainability goals up to the end of the 2023 financial year on 31 March 2023. The producer's Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions dropped by 26% compared to 2019 levels, against a new target of a 42% drop by 2030. Environmental product declarations (EPDs) covered 94% of its sales, ahead of a target for the year of 80%. The company launched a new goal to include 30% minority-identified people in its US management.

Chief sustainability officer and vice president, environmental social and governance, Jill Kolling said “Sustainability is a continuous journey, but a necessary one to drive value for our stakeholders, while delivering on our ambition to be a more resilient company. From our boardroom to our manufacturing plants, we are giving sustainability a place at the table to drive meaningful impact and instill accountability across all facets of our organisation.”

Shun Shing Group appoints four new board members

07 June 2023

Bangladesh: Shun Shing Group has made new appointments to the roles of chair, vice chair, deputy managing director and managing director of business development operations. The Dhaka Tribune newspaper has reported that the group has promoted Ikram Ahmed Khan, formerly managing director, to the role of chair. Raihan Ahmed will serve as vice chair and Shakib Pasha as deputy managing director, while Tahmina Ahmed will serve as managing director of business development operations. The China-headquartered group previously appointed Tahmina Ahmed as additional managing director for Bangladesh in June 2021. She has served on the board of directors since 2007.

Indian industry only 8% female

09 March 2023

India: India's 'core industries,' including cement, steel and fossil fuels, employ just 8% women across the total workforce. The Free Press Journal has reported that gender equality body UN Women found the proportion of women to be as low as 3.9% at UltraTech Cement. JSW Cement owner JSW Group employs 5.3% women. Meanwhile, Holcim, which left the Indian market in September 2022, operates with a 13% female global workforce.

Cement companies joined in celebrations of International Women's Day on 8 March 2023.

Holcim Argentina launches gender inclusivity hackathon

07 April 2022

Argentina: Holcim Argentina has launched a hackathon for project proposals aimed at boosting gender inclusivity in the Argentinian construction sector. Projects may fall along one or more target axes: awareness, education and training, enterprise or public policy. Two winning projects will claim US$300,000 each in prize money, and the contest is open to anyone over 18. The company says that the hackathon is an invite to open a conversation about the presence and appreciation of women in cement and construction.

Bamburi Cement launches Women on Wheels inclusive hiring scheme

20 December 2021

Kenya: Bamburi Cement has launched Women on Wheels, a women-centred recruitment programme aimed at encouraging more women into truck driving. The Kenya News Agency has reported that the company plans to recruit at least 100 new cement truck drivers annually under the scheme. Women on Wheels will additionally work to increase health and safety, challenge entrenched sexism and improve working conditions for all of the company’s drivers.

Managing Director Seddiq Hassani said “The gender gap is far from closed, however we are determined to increase the promotion of women in every aspect of our operations.”

Lafarge Africa tops Nigerian gender diversity index

24 August 2021

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has ranked first on PWR Advisory’s Nigerian Exchange Top 20 companies for gender diversity. 46% of the group’s board seats are female-occupied, up from 40% in 2020.

Chair Adebode Adefioye said “Lafarge Africa's commitment to female representation at the board and management rank and file level is unwavering. Our diversity and inclusion targets, which align with our sustainability strategy, set us apart and are a clear indication of our resolve to continue on this trajectory for more extraordinary outcomes. We remain resolutely committed.”

Qatar National Cement Company produces 2.2Mt and profit falls by 51% year-on-year in 2019

28 January 2020

Qatar: Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) has recorded a profit of US$47.3m in 2019 – down by 51% from US$95.5m in 2018. This was caused by a 17% year-on-year fall in earnings to US$193m from US$233m in 2018 due to a 24% fall in production year-on-year – from 2.9Mt to 2.2Mt – and increased costs from the completion of the fifth line at the company’s integrated plant, as well as the diversification of its products to include white as well as grey cement.

Tarmac Women in Cement group holds first networking event

30 May 2018

UK: Tarmac’s Women in Cement group has held its first networking event with colleagues from across the company’s cement and lime business coming together to discuss key industry challenges and opportunities. The event was attended by team members from the businesses supply chain and logistics, customer service, health and safety and cement plant teams. It included a range of discussion topics and presentations, from personal protective equipment (PPE) and welfare facilities to profiling role models and opportunities to attract more women to pursue careers at Tarmac and in the wider construction industry.

“It has been fantastic to bring together colleagues from across the business to share their experiences and continue our work to collaborate and drive positive change. We’re looking forward to building and broadening activities across Tarmac and continuing to encourage people from all age groups, genders nationalities and ethnicities to be part of the debate and help to define opportunities for development and progress,” said Johanna O’Driscoll, Tarmac’s finance director.

The Women in Cement group is one of a number of diversity and inclusion initiatives across Tarmac. The company has partnered with organisations including the Taylor Bennett Foundation, Skillforce and the Career Transition Partnership, which all focus on supporting people from diverse backgrounds into jobs.
