Indonesia: China-based Sinoma International Engineering has completed the installation of a 10,000t/day integrated cement production line complete with raw material processing and clinker storage capacity at Gama Group subsidiary PT Cemindo Gemilang’s integrated Bayah II plant. China Daily News has reported that the Sinoma International Engineering Team worked overtime in order to complete the commission ahead of its scheduled date in May 2020. Project manager Wang Xiaojun said, “The COVID-19 outbreak had a severe impact on on-site construction.”
Spain’s cement producers unite against coronavirus waste
26 March 2020Spain: Members of the Spanish cement association Oficemen have offered help to the government in the disposal of medical waste contaminated with the coronavirus, for which any kiln line with the right alternative fuel processing capabilities will be made available. Minister for Industry Reyes Maroto said that the plants will be used for waste’s elimination ‘only insofar as companies can continue operating.’
Kunda Nordic Tsement to close plant
19 March 2020Estonia: Germany-based HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary Kunda Nordic Tsement has announced the planned closure of its 0.8Mt/yr integrated Kunda plant in Kunda, Lääne-Viru County in March 2020. Business World Magazine has reported the plant closure will result in 80 redundancies. The company has stated the reason for the closure as being that the plant’s equipment, which produces cement by the wet method, is economically unviable due to its CO2 intensity.
The price of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) emissions permits fell to Euro15.24/t of CO2 on 18 March 2020, down by 30% from Euro21.71/t on 18 March 2020.
Anhui Conch uses coronavirus closure for maintenance
11 February 2020China: Anhui Conch’s subsidiary China Cement Plant Company (CCPC) has made the best of the downtime necessitated by the coronavirus outbreak by carrying out necessary maintenance work on its integrated plant’s third line, including the installation of a new vertical roller mill. Anhui Conch says CCPC is undertaking the work with the greatest degree of care for the ‘prevention and control of new coronavirus cases.’
Qatar National Cement Company produces 2.2Mt and profit falls by 51% year-on-year in 2019
28 January 2020Qatar: Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) has recorded a profit of US$47.3m in 2019 – down by 51% from US$95.5m in 2018. This was caused by a 17% year-on-year fall in earnings to US$193m from US$233m in 2018 due to a 24% fall in production year-on-year – from 2.9Mt to 2.2Mt – and increased costs from the completion of the fifth line at the company’s integrated plant, as well as the diversification of its products to include white as well as grey cement.
Jordan: 21.8% state-owned Jordan Cement, 50.3% subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, has laid off 200 of its 550 employees after incurring losses of US$87m in the nine months to 30 September 2019. Reuters has reported that the company, whose 2018 losses were US$48.9m, up by 4.0% year-on-year from US$47.0m in 2017, made the sackings ‘to ensure its continuity,’ according to Jordan Cement CEO Samaan Samaan. The company has operated a single line at its 2.0Mt/yr integrated Rashadiyah cement plant since the closure of its 2.0Mt/yr Fuhais plant in 2013. The country’s 9Mt/yr-capacity cement sector serves a domestic demand of 4Mt/yr.
Najran Cement takes US$3m hit on stopping production line
16 February 2018Saudi Arabia: Najran Cement says that the financial impact of temporarily stopping its third production line and reopening its second production line will be around US$3m. The cement producer intends to sell stock from inventory to mitigate the cost.
Loma Negra to build new line at L'Amalí plant
14 December 2017Argentina: Loma Negra plans to spend US$350m on building a new 2.7Mt/yr production line at its Amalí plant in Olavarria. Production on the new line is scheduled to start in early 2020. Once operational it is expected to create 220 new jobs. The new line will include a new kiln, two new two vertical mill for raw and cement grinding and a bagging and palletising unit.
Cherat Cement to build new production line at Nowshera plant
24 January 2017Pakistan: Cherat Cement has announced plants to build a third production line at its plant at Nowshera in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. The new line will have a cement production capacity of 7100t/day, according to the Express Tribune newspaper. The upgrade will increase the company’s production capacity to 4.5Mt/yr.
The cement producer opened at second production line at the site in late 2016. It is also planning to build a waste heat recovery unit.
Nigeria: A new 2.5Mt/yr production line at the UNICEM Calabar cement plant is set to start production in October 2016. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim will employ 1024 workers, comprising 539 expatriates and 485 local staff, according to Today Digital.
