Colacem appoints Armis for cybersecurity services

16 October 2023

Italy: Colacem has selected US-based Armis’ Armis Centrix AI-based cyber exposure management platform to protect online assets in its cement plants. Italian Industry News has reported that protected assets include IT equipment, operational technologies and internet of things (IoT) devices.

Colacem security manager Luca Salemmi said “We requested support from Armis because we realised that we did not have visibility on all devices. What we immediately liked about Armis Centrix is its ability to evaluate the level of vulnerability of each device and to provide a priority order for immediate intervention so that it resolves the most critical risks.”

Nexe Group orders software from Rockwell Automation

10 October 2023

Croatia: Nexe Group has ordered a suite of software products from US-based Rockwell Automation to digitise production processes, reduce energy usage and increase production. It will use the FactoryTalk Analytics Pavilion8 software together with performance-management dashboards based on the ThingWorx IIoT platform, part of the FactoryTalk InnovationSuite, supplied by PTC

The software architecture to be deployed at Nexe was formulated by data science teams from Rockwell Automation and subsidiary Kalypso. The Pavilion8 model predictive control (MPC) product sits on top of automation systems and continuously assesses current and predicted operational data. It then compares this data to desired results, and drives new control targets to reduce process variability, improve performance and boost efficiency.

Danijel Koren, plant manager at Nexe’s integrated cement plant at Našice said “This is a push forward on this important journey for the whole group. We are looking to link all systems together and put operational data in the hands of people who can make a difference. Early results point to real success in terms of savings and efficiency; indeed, we are predicting a payback period of less than a year.”

Aggregate Industries takes on driver tiredness with AI monitoring

06 October 2023

UK: Holcim subsidiary Aggregate Industries has installed Driver Status Monitoring Systems supplied by Spillard Vehicle Safety Systems in the cabins of its Cauldon cement plant truck fleet. The systems use cameras and AI software to detect signs of tiredness, as well as mobile phone use, lane deviation, not wearing a seatbelt and smoking. In the case of tiredness, this triggers an alarm which continues to sound until the vehicle comes to a stop.

Cement supply chain manager Matt Owen said “Health and safety is a massive priority for us as a company and the industry, so anything that can serve to continuously improve our approach to it is very welcome. Driver fatigue is always a potential issue across any business involved in transport and fleet, so we’re delighted to be utilising the latest technology with our partners to ensure that everyone gets safely home from work.”

EU enacts carbon border adjustment mechanism regulation

18 August 2023

Europe: The EU has enacted the implementing regulation for the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) under its emissions trading scheme (ETS). Under the CBAM, importers of cement to the EU will eventually pay taxes for its embedded CO2 emissions, equivalent to those levied against EU-based producers. Importers must begin to collect emissions data from 1 October 2023, and submit a report for the fourth quarter of 2023 to EU authorities by 31 January 2024. No financial adjustment will yet be payable during the transition period to full CBAM implementation from the start of 2026.

Global Cement and Concrete Association and Leadership Group for Industry Transition launch Green Cement Technology Tracker

20 July 2023

World: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) launched the Green Cement Technology Tracker on 20 July 2023. The Green Cement Technology Tracker presents users with a real-time overview of active initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions in the global cement industry. At present, the tracker covers carbon capture projects, which account for 36% of planned emissions reductions under the GCCA’s 2050 Roadmap for Net Zero Carbon Concrete. The partners plan to subsequently expand the scope of coverage to other emissions reduction technologies.

GCCA CEO Thomas Guillot said “Unleashing technology such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage is key to achieving our net zero mission in our sector. Carbon capture pilots, projects and announcements are picking up pace across the world. This technology works, and our next goal is to scale up, working with stakeholders such as governments and the investment community to help transform the industry worldwide.”

The Green Cement Technology Tracker is freely accessible here on the LeadIT website.
