Ciments Calcia to increase rail transport

Belgium/France: Ciments Calcia plans to transition 60% of its truck transport of cement in Belgium and France to rail. The company says that the shift will eliminate 5% of its CO2 emissions. 400 rail cars currently distribute cement from Ciments Calcia’s 10 production sites. The producer said that the planned increase became possible due to logistics solutions developer Everysens’ transport digitisation software.

Everysens promotes use of logistics software with Ciments Calcia

France: Logistics software provider Everysens says that its Transport & Visibility Management System (TVMS) product has helped Ciments Calcia to improve its use of railway transportation. Philippe Labbé, the logistics director for the subsidiary of Germany-based Heidelberg Cement, said that the company had been using the software for three years. During which time it increased its productivity and saved time on the operational management of rail logistics. Labbé added that he thought the product would help the company meet its decarbonisation commitments by switching more trucks to rail.

Ciments Calcia originally chose Everysens to digitise of use of railway transport, to bring all the relevant data on to one platform and to improve its management of it. The building materials manufacturer sells around 5.3Mt/yr of cement and it operates 10 production sites. It uses over 400 railway wagons in France and Belgium.

Conch IT Engineering to supply software for Anhui Conch Cement subsidiary

China: Anhui Conch Cement has engaged Conch IT Engineering for software platform supply and maintenance services for some of its subsidiaries. The supplier will provide design and technical services for the production process control system software, a sales and product dispatch system, production data uploading and a quality management system for clinker production lines, grinding units, aggregate, commodity concrete and technology modification projects. The value of the work is US$36m.

Seven Circle converts to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure systems

Bangladesh: Shun Shing Group subsidiary Seven Circle says that it has successfully migrated its on-premises, business-critical, finance and manufacturing systems to Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure digital services platform. The Bangladesh Monitor newspaper has reported that the company made the transition in order to lower its costs, increase its operational agility and improve productivity. It has since experienced a 30% drop in capital expenditure and almost doubled its uptime as a result. Seven Circle also deployed cloud disaster recovery capabilities for its workloads on the new platform. This can allow the company to serve its customers in a timely manner and reinvest the savings to drive innovation.

Shun Shing Group human resources and digitalisation head Anika Ali Chowdhury said “Running our back-office operations quickly and reliably, 24/7, is critical for success. It helps us to ensure we are sourcing the best raw materials, making the right production investments, and delivering quality products with reliable and fast delivery. This allows us to earn the highest level of customer trust.”

Cemex Ventures invests in PartRunner

US: Cemex Ventures says that it has invested in industry and construction sector on-demand delivery platform PartRunner. The startup operates a fleet of trucks which provide flexible service to warehouses, retailers and job sites across the US. Under Cemex Ventures’ guidance, it plans to expand its services to also cover Mexico.

Cemex Ventures director Gonzalo Galindo said "This solution fits perfectly with Cemex's commitment to offer our customers greater control over their businesses by improving efficiency and transparency in the delivery of construction products and materials.”

OYAK Cement uses DataRobot’s AI software to reduce CO2 emissions and costs in 2021

31 January 2022

Turkey: OYAK Cement says that it eliminated 200,000t of CO2 emissions during 2021 through its use of US-based DataRobot’s AI software. The producer said that the technology enabled it to multiply its alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate by seven an reduce its mechanical failure prediction time by 75%. It added that the software contributed to a US$39m/yr drop in costs.

W&P Zement offers virtual plant tours

Austria: W&P cement has launched digital tours of its Peggau, Styria, and Weitersdorf, Carinthia, cement plants using 3D photo technology. Virtual guests can access areas which are closed off during conventional tours, while integrated information points provide them with detailed knowledge. W&P Zement also offers a digital tour of one of its ready-mixed concrete plants in Gratkorn, Styria.

Sales Director Peter Ramskogler said “It was important to us to make our production facilities accessible to everyone. Especially in times of a pandemic, the virtual factory brings even more advantages. In this way, we can at least continue to offer digital tours for schools and universities - regardless of current safety regulations."

Cemex signs service deal with HCL Technologies

22 December 2021

Mexico: Cemex has signed a five-year agreement with India-based HCL Technologies for information technology (IT) services related to employee services, increased automation and analytics. HCL will work on IT managed services, infrastructure and application services and end-user support. It will also collaborate with Neoris, a subsidiary of Cemex, on customer services and supply chain resiliency. HCL will use its DryICE and Software products, along with various other automation products.

“Cemex selected HCL Technologies because we have a vision of working smarter to cater to the global company’s fast-growing operations,” said Fausto Sosa, vice president of Information Technology of Cemex.

Argos implements simulation model for marine cement dispatches

18 November 2021

Colombia: Cementos Argos says that it uses simulation software for logistics at six of its port operations. The company explained that simulation helps to avoid delays in the rotation of resources and to optimise ships’ capacity.

International commercial advisor Alfonso Andrés Ibarra said “The simulator facilitates the decision-making process when delivering our material, since it allows us to evaluate different scenarios in advance to define the best alternative for loading the shipments. This way, time and costs are reduced, and our supply chain is optimised.”
