US: Buzzi subsidiary Buzzi Unicem USA has published an update following a fire on the evening of 13 July 2023. The producer said that it first detected smoke from an alternative fuel (AF) store that housed wood chips and shredded tyres. Staff contacted the fire service, which brought the blaze under control without any injuries. The fire damaged the siding of the storehouse, as well as some electrical equipment. The producer said that the Stockertown cement plant did not lose electrical power, and that it is currently evaluating the extent of the damage.

Plant manager Rad Slavov said “I want to thank all the emergency responders for their quick response and professionalism in getting the fire under control swiftly.”

US: Continental Cement will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new 114,000t-capacity cement storage dome at its Davenport cement plant in Iowa on 20 March 2023. The dome will replace existing winter storage facilities at the plant, resulting in a safer and more efficient operation, according to the subsidiary of Summit Materials.

The company’s president, David Loomes, said "The investment by Summit Materials of US$30m in the largest cement storage dome in North America represents a strong vote of confidence in Continental Cement and a commitment to sustained operations and investment in the State of Iowa."

Continental Cement plans to invest an additional US$32m in an expansion to its Green America Recycling programme, whereby it expects to achieve an alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate of 55%.

Italy: Colacem has issued notices of dismissal to the remaining seven employees at the site of the former Maddaloni cement plant, now a cement storage facility. The Il Mattino newspaper has reported that the producer has offered all workers bonuses in exchange for their resignations.

Cement production at the Maddaloni site in Campania ceased in late 2021, after a period of grinding-only operations following the shutdown of the kiln in 2019.

US: Titan America has successfully converted its cement operations to 100% Portland limestone cement (PLC) production. As part of its transition, the producer established two new 70,000t storage domes to serve its key markets.

President and CEO Bill Zarkalis said "I would like to thank all members of the Titan America team who are able and energised to provide the highest performing products to our customers, and do so with our 2030 goals for a sustainable future at top of mind. Our conversion to 100% Type IL PLC production and our expanded investments to deliver lower carbon products and solutions to customers showcase the progress we have made and our commitment to accelerate our contribution to addressing climate change."

Azerbaijan: Azeri cement producers recorded 2.98Mt in total cement production volumes during the first 10 months of 2022. The figure represents growth by a factor of more than two from 1.46Mt in the corresponding period of 2021. As of 1 November 2022, producers had stores of 96,400t of cement in reserve.

During the same period, ready-mix concrete production also more than doubled to 1.15Mm³, while precast concrete elements production rose by 63% year-on-year to 40,800m³.

Saudi Arabia: Yamama Cement has commissioned its second cement plant, with 20,000t/day in capacity across two clinker lines. The producer invested US$1.25bn in the plant's construction, which was carried out by Germany-based ThyssenKrupp. The facility is equipped with seven raw materials crushers, a 3.7km-long limestone conveyor belt, 110,000t of storage capacity, four Quadropol roller mills, two Dopol preheater towers, two Polro rotary kilns, two Polytrack clinker coolers, three 100,000t clinker silos, four Polycom high-pressure roller mills, six 22,590t and 25,000t cement silos and 22,000m³
in water storage basins. The new plant is situated in the eastern Arabian Desert, 80km from Riyadh.

Yamama Cement also operates the 6.4Mt/yr Al Karj Cement plant, 70km from Riyadh.

Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement’s Vassiliko cement plant was the site of a tyre fire in an alternative fuel (AF) storage area on 11 June 2022. The Cyprus Mail newspaper has reported that the fire begun due to a mobile shredder malfunction. Enerco Energy Recovery operates the shredder at the 2.5Mt/yr cement plant. Local residents protested the incident at the site of the plant’s former quarry on 13 June 2022.

Germany: Flender has launched the construction of a new 8000m² storehouse at its Voerde, North Rhine-Westphalia, logistics centre. Along with the lease of an additional building from project developer Panattoni, the project will expand Flender’s total storage footprint by 19,000m². The supplier says that the new facilities will reduce the Voerde centre’s CO₂ by optimising its transport routes.

Flender CEO Andreas Evertz said "I am very happy that the expansion of our site in Voerde will allow us to centralise our logistics activities, bringing us another step closer to our goal of operating in a completely carbon neutral fashion by 2030. With the new warehouse space, we are making our logistics processes sustainable and thus reducing a significant part of the previous transport routes and the associated CO₂ emissions.”

Hungary: Italy-based Entsorga has completed the installation of an automated alternative fuel (AF) line at a Hungarian cement plant.The upgrade consists of an Entsorga Spider crane and Pelican power system which will be able to maintain a continuous feed to the plant’s calcination system 24 hours a day.

Entsorga CEO Francesco Galanzino said, “Bringing a commission to a successful conclusion in the middle of the maximum intensity period of the coronavirus crisis has been a great satisfaction. The cement plant will make significant savings in CO₂ emissions.”
