US: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim has named the eight recipients of its 38th annual Gygi and von Wyss Foundation Scholarship. LafargeHolcim subsidiary US Cement CEO Jamie Gentoso said, “It’s essential to invest in the education of the next generation and, with the rising costs of higher education, scholarships are more important than ever to help reduce the impact and assist in these students’ success.” Under the scholarship scheme, children of LafargeHolcim employees in the US can receive US$6000 towards higher education for a year and again for three subsequent years subject to academic performance.
Cemex is an Energy Star Partner of the Year 2020
28 April 2020US: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared Cemex USA an Energy Star Partner of the Year, the highest award for energy-efficient production in the US. Cemex USA President Jaime Muguiro said, “Sustainability is embedded in our day-to-day operations and is an integral part of our core business strategy. Energy conservation is part of our vision as we are building a better future and believe it’s our responsibility to vigorously practice energy management through on-going initiatives and the use of alternative fuels.”
Cemex USA has earned more than 50 Energy Stars since 2007.
Huaxin Cement wins award for digital projects
17 April 2020China: The China Building Materials Federation and the China Silicate Society have named Hauxin Cement as the winner of the Science and Technology Award 2019 for its digitisation project. The project, entitled ‘Development and Innovation of a Cement Enterprise Operation Digital System,’ aims to modernise management at a pan-business level by using monitoring and analysis, intelligent logistics and a service centre system across 11 different software platforms. 39 Huaxin-affiliated companies currently use the product.
Vecoplan VEZ 3200 pre-shredder wins Red Dot Design Award
14 April 2020Germany: Red Dot has awarded Vecoplan its Red Dot Design Award for the new Vecoplan VEZ 3200 pre-shredder for refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The prize ‘acknowledges the aesthetics and workmanship’ of the product, as well as its ergonomiocs and functionality. Vecoplan CEO Werner Berens said, “The design impacts on the machine construction, making the shredder easier to handle for operators.”
Roanoke Cement plant wins TRUE Gold award
08 April 2020US: Green Business Certification (GBC) has recognised Titan America subsidiary Roanoke Cement’s successful implementation of its zero waste policy at the 1.5Mt/yr Troutville, Virginia plant with a Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Gold award. In 2019 the plant won the GBC’s TRUE Silver award. Roanoke Cement environmental engineer Lindsey Layman said, “In order to elevate our TRUE Zero Waste certification, we ramped up our zero waste policy to include, for example, physical audits of waste and improving recycling practices on-site. As a result, we have created a zero-waste culture and achieved an average of 98% overall diversion from landfill and incineration of solid non-hazardous wastes.”
CalPortland’s Rillito plant wins Energy Star
17 March 2020US: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Energy Star certification to Japan-based Taiheiyo Cement subsidiary CalPortland’s 1.3Mt/yr integrated Rillito plant for the eighth consecutive year for its superior energy performance compared with other plants of comparable capacity in the country. CalPortland president and CEO Allen Hamblen said, “We continue to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship and ENERGY STAR while also reducing our energy costs through the hard work of our employees and our corporate energy management culture.”
Vassiliko Cement is a gold Environmental Protector
28 February 2020Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement has bagged the Environmental Protector gold award for the second consecutive year at the Pancyprian Environmental Awards for Organizations and Businesses 2019. The event was held at the Cypriot Presidential Palace by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CyCERE), the Environment Commissioner’s Office, the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) Agricultural Faculty, the Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB), the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises (ACTE), the Business and Professional Women of Limassol (BPW) and the volunteers’ network Together Cyprus. The company said that its “key aim is to promote environmental practices across all aspects of its activities, in order to protect the communities where it operates, achieving sustainable development.”
Huaxin Cement invests US$0.9m to turn quarry green, wins award
24 December 2019China: Huaxin Cement’s Guoditang quarry in Dongchuan district, Kunming has won the Chinese government’s ‘Green Mine of the Year 2019’ award after receiving total investments of US$0.9m for vegetation recovery. Huaxin integrates land reclamation and afforestation into its step-mining method at the quarry, using planting quilts, sprinklers and drip irrigation devices to recover 80,000m2 of vegetation so far. The company has estimated that the mine will continue to supply its limestone needs in the area until late 2033.
The National Civil Affairs Commission named Huaxin Cement a ‘National Model Unit for National Unity and Progress’ on 17 December 2019. It is the only building materials producer to have obtained the title.
Mexico: Cemex Ventures has partnered with BCG and Tracxn to launch a list of 2019’s global 50 ‘most promising’ construction start-ups. Assessment categories were technical innovation, project management and sustainability. Companies like the UK’s Cloud Cycle, a concrete management platform provider, and the US’s Concrete Sensors, which provides remote concrete strength, temperature and relative humility measurement solutions, typify the promising developments in how the construction industry uses its cement.
Vassiliko Cement wins twice at Cyprus Human Resources Awards
11 November 2019Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement ’s has achieved recognition for human resources (HR) programmes at its 2.5Mt/yr integrated Vassiliko plant in Nicosia, Cyprus, with a silver and a bronze at the first Cyprus Human Resources Awards. Its Talents Academy, launched in 2013 to offer six to 12 months’ paid work experience to a set minimum of unemployed young people with full staff benefits and without necessarily filling vacancies, won silver in the Best Youth Employment Initiative category. Its change of mindset programme ‘Bridge’ won bronze for Best Strategy/Initiative of Change Management for its promotion of intergenerational team spirit, communication and attainment of personal targets.
Vassiliko executive chairman Antonios Anoniou said “Continuous training coupled with the personal and professional development of our employees in the workplace is an essential prerequisite for sustainability."
