Indonesia’s nine-month cement demand increases by 5.5% in 2021
01 November 2021Indonesia: Cement demand rose by 5.5% year-on-year nationally in the first nine months of 2021, according to the Indonesia Cement Association. The association recorded an increase in bagged cement demand of 6.9%, while bulk cement demand increased by 0.9%. Total cement demand grew in all regions except for Bali, East Nusa Tenggara and West Tenggara. Sulawesi recorded the highest demand growth with a rise of 10%, consisting of 80% bagged cement and 20% bulk cement demand growth.
In 2020, domestic cement demand was 62.7Mt. Indonesia has an installed cement capacity of 115.3Mt/yr.
Dalmia Bharat increases cement sales, earnings and profit in first half of 2022 financial year
28 October 2021India: Dalmia Bharat’s consolidated cement sales in the first half of the 2022 financial year were 5.1Mt, up by 6.2% year-on-year from 4.8Mt in the first half of the 2021 financial year. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 1.6% to US$178m from US$176m. The company recorded a net profit of US$67.1m during the period, up by 19% from US$56.3m. During the second quarter of the year, which ended on 30 September 2021, Dalmia Bharat commissioned a second line at its Cuttack, Odisha, cement plant and began trial production at its newly acquired Murli cement plant in Maharashtra.
The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that managing director Puneet Dalmia said "We are pleased with our performance during the quarter. In spite of unprecedented costs related headwinds across all regions, our razor sharp focus on operational efficiencies and execution has helped us contain our costs and deliver an industry-leading performance. We have made considerable progress on our immediate priorities, including expanding our capacity, driving organisational transformation, reinforcing our brand and redefining our corporate governance framework. Looking ahead, we remain focused on further strengthening our momentum to drive sustainable and profitable growth and generate top-tier returns for our stakeholders.” He continued “As India's economy continues to rebound from the lows of last year, we expect the demand and pricing environment for the sector to improve for the rest of the 2022 financial year."
Kenya: Cement companies are in the process of expanding their total clinker production capacity by 70% to 10.7Mt/yr by 2023 from 6.3Mt/yr. The Business Daily newspaper has reported that six producers – Bamburi Cement, East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC), Karsan Ramji & Sons, National Cement, Rai Cement and Savannah Cement – will add a total of 4.4Mt/yr to their clinker capacities.
Global Cement News previously reported that Kenya faced a 3.3Mt/yr national clinker shortage on 13 October 2021. Domestic producers are in the process of lobbying the government to raise the duty on imports of clinker to 25% from 10%.
Corporación Noroeste completes Cementos Balboa acquisition
18 October 2021Spain: Corporación Noroeste has completed its acquisition of Cementos Balboa. The companies agreed to the deal in June 2021. Agencia EFE News has reported that the acquisition brings parent company Votorantim Cimentos’ installed cement capacity to 57.4Mt/yr globally.
India: Rain Industries has expanded the capacity of its Kurnool grinding plant in Andhra Pradesh. Reuters News has reported that the expansion enlarges the plant’s capacity by 38% to 2.8Mt/yr from 2Mt/yr.
UltraTech Cement to commission 1.2Mt/yr-worth of new cement capacity in Eastern India in October 2021
14 October 2021India: UltraTech Cement says that it will commission a total of 1.2Mt/yr-worth of additional cement capacity in Eastern India throughout October 2021. The company invested US$53.1m in the new infrastructure.
India: Ambuja Cements has commenced commercial production at its new 3Mt/yr Marwar cement plant in Nagaur, Rajasthan. The plant has and an additional 2Mt/yr of grinding capacity. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that the producer invested US$316m in its construction. The Marwar cement plant increases Ambuja Cement’s installed capacity by 20% to 29.7Mt/yr.
Managing director Neeraj Akhoury said “Ambuja has ambitious growth plans to expand its capacities in India, and the Marwar plant is a step in that direction. We are very proud that it is a ‘green plant’ designed to meet our ambition for a sustainable future. The plant has deployed all modern equipment and technology to produce cement in a more environmentally friendly manner. It has a waste heat recovery (WHR) system that converts waste heat derived during the production process into energy.”
JK Cement completes Nimbahera cement plant upgrade
30 September 2021India: JK Cement has successfully completed an upgrade of Line 3 of its Nimbahera, Rajasthan, cement plant. The upgraded line has a 30% expanded capacity of 6500t/day, compared to 5000t/day previously.
The plant produces some cement for export to countries including Bahrain, the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania.
Birla Corporation to increase cement capacity by 92% by 2028
30 September 2021India: Birla Corporation has announced plans for a 92% increase of its installed cement production capacity to 30Mt/yr by 2027 from 15.6Mt/yr. The company’s upcoming 3.9Mt/yr Mukutban cement plant near Nagpur, Maharashtra, is scheduled for commissioning in early 2022. The impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak increased the project’s cost by 12% to US$370m from US$330m. The Times of India has reported that the group’s next phase of expansion will focus on the operations of the former Reliance Cement Company. Birla Corporation acquired the company in 2016.
Dalmia Cement commences operations at expanded Kapilas cement plant
27 September 2021India: Dalmia Cement has begun cement production at the new 2.3Mt/yr Line 2 of it Kapilas cement plant near Cuttack in Odisha. The plant now commands a production capacity of 4.0Mt/yr.
