Turkish Cement production rises in 2021
25 March 2022Turkey: Members of Türkçimento produced 78.9Mt of cement in 2021, up by 9.2% year-on-year from 2020 levels. Capacity utilisation for the year averaged 71%. Cement sales also rose, by 8.2% to 60.2Mt. Exports fell by 1.9% year-on-year to 30.8Mt, with a value of US$1.26bn, 23% of total sales.
Türkçimento chair Fatih Yücelik said that the sector has ‘rapidly and heavily’ felt the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on its operations. Yücelik said “We continued our activities in 2021 under difficult conditions, following 23% year-on-year growth in 2020. We predict 4% growth in our sector in line with the economic growth target in 2022.”
Austria: Alpacem has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its new headquarters at Wietersdorf, Carinthia. The company will invest Euro6m to establish the new headquarters on the site of its Wietersdorf cement plant. It will contain 50 office work stations, with meeting rooms and socialising zones.
In 2021, Alpacem says that it supplied 2Mt of cement and 350,000m2 of ready-mix concrete to projects in the Alpine/Adriatic region.
CRH exits Russian market
04 March 2022Russia/Ukraine: CRH says that it has withdrawn from the Russian building materials market. It operated seven ready-mix concrete batching plants and a concrete panel plant in St Petersburg through its subsidiaries LujaBetomix and Rudus. CEO Albert Manifold estimated the group’s investments in the businesses to be Euro1.5 – 2m. RTÉ News has reported that Manifold called the operations ‘infinitesimally small,’ and said that a Russian withdrawal had previously been on the group’s radar anyway.
CRH says that it has suspended its Ukrainian operations, which reportedly generated Euro281m in sales in 2021, and continues to support its 820 employees in the country in every way it can.
Sika acquires Sable Marco
03 March 2022Canada: Switzerland-based Sika has acquired cement products and mortars company Sable Marco. The group hopes that the acquisition will open new opportunities for it in Eastern Canada. Sable Marco reportedly generated full-year sales of US$21.7m in 2021.
Vicem sells 29.4Mt of cement and clinker in 2021
08 February 2022Vietnam: Vicem sold 29.4Mt of cement and clinker in 2021, in line with its sales volumes in 2020. Viet Nam News has reported that the company produced 24.1Mt of cement during the year, down by 2.1% year-on-year. Its sales were US$1.46bn, in line with 2020 sales.
Vietnamese domestic cement consumption fell by 5.2% year-on-year to 59Mt in 2021.
Vicem Bút Son sells 3.2Mt of cement in 2021
07 February 2022Vietnam: Vicem Bút Son sold 3.2Mt of cement in 2021, 91% of the volume stipulated in its plan for the year. Its clinker sales were 2.8Mt, 96% of planned volumes. Viet Nam News has reported that the company is targeting a 14% increase in cement sales to 3.4Mt in 2022. Its clinker sales target is 600,000t.
Pakistan: Lucky Cement increased its standalone first-half sales in the 2022 financial year by 20% year-on-year to US$2.87bn from US$2.39bn in the first half of the 2021 financial year. This was despite a 5.9% year-on-year decline in cement volumes to 4.7Mt. Domestic cement sales increased by 0.8% to 3.66Mt from 3.63Mt, while exports fell by 20% to 1.07Mt from 1.34Mt.
The Business Recorder newspaper has reported that the company increased its consolidated net profit by 27% year-on-year. Its consolidated profit after tax was US$972m in the first half of the 2022 financial year.
Brazilian cement sales rise to 64.7Mt in 2021
14 January 2022Brazil: The Brazilian National Cement Industry Association (SNIC) has recorded cement sales of 64.7Mt by Brazilian cement producers in 2021, up by 6.6% year-on-year from 2020 levels. Home construction work, property development and infrastructure building all contributed to the rise. Capacity utilisation rose to 69% from 65% across the country’s 94Mt/yr, 91-plant cement network.
Steppe Cement increases its cement sales in 2021
13 January 2022Kazakhstan: Steppe Cement sold US$83.4m-worth of cement in 2021, up by 16% year-on-year from its US$71.7m-worth in 2020. Its sales volumes totalled 1.69Mt for the year, up by 2.4% from 1.65Mt in 2020. It exported 202,000t of cement, down by 57% from 86,500t. The company said that production limitations prevented it from fully meeting demand, and it concentrated on local markets. Regarding its outlook in 2022, Steppe Cement said “We have a healthy cash balance and are continuing our capital expenditure (CAPEX) programme to increase the production capacity of the company by 5% by mid-2022.”
Dow Jones Newswires has reported that Kazakhstan’s 2021 full-year cement consumption was 11.6Mt, up by 23% year-on-year from 9.4Mt in 2020. A rule change to pension withdrawals permitting allocations for home improvement and construction bolstered demand growth. Exports fell by 20% to 1.6Mt from 2Mt, while imports rose by 33% to 800,000t from 600,000t.
India: Axis Bank subsidiary Axis Securities has predicted a 4 – 6% year-on-year drop in Indian cement sales volumes during the third quarter of the 2022 financial year, which ended on 31 December 2021. The Hindu newspaper has reported the reasons for the predicted drop as extended monsoons, especially in the south of the country, and a construction ban in the National Capital Region due to pollution. Monthly sales grew slightly year-on-year in December 2021.
Axis Securities has also forecast a revival of demand in the fourth-quarter, driven by infrastructure and housing projects. Overall, it expects national demand for cement to grow by 8 – 9% in the 2022 financial year.
