US: Italy-based Bedeschi has been awarded a new order for the supply of two BED RNSH 1800/6 type apron feeders for Lehigh Cement’s integrated Mitchell plant in Indiana. The new feeders will be able to process up to 1300t/hr of crushed limestone and they will be placed in the primary and secondary crushing area to replace the old existing machines. They feature super duty design with CAT type chains and a Bedeschi super duty belt. As part of the installation Bedeschi has used a three dimensional survey to define the exact room availability in the existing plant. The new feeders will join three others at the plant that were already ordered as part of an upgrade programme for clay crushing and additive dosing. No value for the order has been disclosed.
Lehigh Cement, a subsidiary of Germany-based HeidelbergCement, resumed work on its US$600m upgrade project at the Mitchell plant in February 2021. Work on the upgrade was suspended in early 2020.
Bruks Siwertell supplies road-mobile ship unloader to Ozinga
08 September 2021US: Sweden-based Bruks Siwertell has delivered a 5000 S road-mobile ship unloader to Ozinga. The product was originally ordered in 2020 and it provides a continuous rated unloading capacity of 300t/hr for vessels up to 5000dwt. It is Ozinga’s first order from Bruks Siwertell.
Ozinga specialises in concrete, dry bulk materials and natural gas energy solutions. It operates a network of truck, rail, barge and ship terminals mostly in the mid-west region of the US, where the new ship unloader will be used.
Documentary on cement plant pollution in Meghalaya wins 2021 Yale Environment 360 prize
06 September 2021US/India: Judges from Yale University have awarded first place at the 2021 Yale Environment 360 video contest to Aarti Srivastava for her documentary film entitled the 'Story of Lumshnong.' The Indo-Asian News Service has reported that the film tracks the ‘disaster’ ensuing from the establishment of eight cement plants near the town of Lumshnong in a forested area of Meghalaya state. It claims that the intensive activity has led to water problems, high dust levels in Lumshnong and deforestation.
LafargeHolcim US launches CementDirect
26 August 2021US: LafargeHolcim US, part of Switzerland-based Holcim, has launched its CementDirect ready-mix concrete delivery mobile and web application (app) on the US market. The app consolidates ordering, tracking and shipping records for customers. Plant operators will be able to sign-off on deliveries and access bills of lading remotely.
Supply chain senior vice president Kristin Beck said “More than ever, ready-mix producers are operating under significant constraints. CementDirect allows for easier access to delivery information and removes the daily burden of managing and storing paper.”
Cemex USA to establish new aggregates plant in Alabama
24 August 2021US: Cemex USA has announced plans for an upcoming 600,000t/yr aggregates plant in Brierfield, Alabama. The Birmingham Business Journal newspaper has reported that, when operational, the plant will supply the company’s ready-mix concrete operations in the state. The subsidiary of Mexico-based Cemex operates 30 batching plants in Alabaster, Tuscaloosa and Vance.
Mid-South regional president Marc Tyson said “The Brierfield plant gives us a new opportunity to support our existing customers and earn the business of new ones by leveraging the wealth of experience of our team and providing them materials sourced from all parts of Cemex USA's supply chain.”
US: Solidia Technologies has appointed Russell Hill as its chief technology officer. He succeeds Nicholas DeCristofaro, who will retire in September 2021.
Hill joins Solidia after 25 years working for Boral, most recently as Group Chief Innovation Officer. In 2012, he led the discovery and development of a new series of ‘green’ products that opened new market segments and geography to the building materials producer. Hill holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of North Texas and is named as an inventor on 56 patents, consisting of over 20 distinct families. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute, ASTM, the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Sigma.
Solidia Technologies produces reduced-CO2 concrete with lower-energy cement and water-free CO2 curing.
US: Pozzolan cement producer Green Cement has appointed Grant Quasha as its chief executive officer (CEO). He succeeds John T Preston, who will remain as chairman of the board. Quasha will be based in Texas, where the company has its headquarters and existing production facilities. He will also be joining the company's board of directors.
Quasha previously worked as the regional chief investment officer of GFG Alliance. Before this he was the CEO and managing director of Paringa Resources, a mining company, and the chief commercial officer of Wolverine Fuels, a producer of bituminous coal. He also worked as the North American Manager of Corporate and Structured Finance at Trafigura AG, as an investment banker in JPMorgan's New York mining and metals division and has worked on the board of directors of the National Mining Association. Quasha holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School.
Green Cement produces cements made using pozzolonic materials including its PozzoSlag product. It sold over 2Mt of cement in 2020.
Martin Engineering launches online conveyor training content
16 August 2021US: Martin Engineering has launched new online conveyor training content. The supplier says that the content integrates with client customer learning management systems (LMS). It is intended to enable users to independently assign, monitor and certify progress of participants across all of a producer’s locations.
Training manager Jerad Heitzler said, “With this new effort in place, Martin has taken another step forward in global conveyor training.” He added “We’ve emerged as an LMS content provider to deliver greater flexibility and control over employee learning, helping customers attain the highest levels of efficiency and safety.”
CalPortland joins Wildlife Habitat Council
13 August 2021North America: US-based CalPortland has become a corporate member of the Wildlife Habitat Council. The council manages habitats to support sustainable ecosystems and the communities surrounding them. The Japan-based Taiheiyo Cement subsidiary says that the move formalises its commitment to integrating biodiversity and conservation action into its sustainability efforts.
President and chief executive officer Allen Hamblen said "Our membership with the Wildlife Habitat Council provides a unique opportunity to take corporate sustainability goals and objectives and translate them into tangible, on-the-ground actions which ensure a sustainable environment for the next generation."
US: Testing technology supplier Forney has named Jennifer Galligane as its new Product Development Manager, with the task of ‘driving the company's technological and commercial advances.’ Galligane will be responsible for overseeing the Forney Software as a Service (SaaS) team, driving Forney SaaS technology advancements and ensuring strategic alignment of customer needs with the SaaS roadmap, leading the overall delivery process and collaborating with customers, sales and marketing, and engineering.
Galligane has 25 years of software industry experience and extensive knowledge of SaaS and eCommerce product development. Prior to joining Forney, she was Law firm Fragomen’s technical delivery senior manager, having previously held product management, eCommerce and engineering positions with a variety of companies, including Westinghouse Electric Co., Smith Micro Software, Coventry Health Care and Highmark Health. Galligane has a computer science degree and an information science master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Forney’s CEO Jeff Dziki said "With ForneyVault technology now in five countries and more than 100 labs, Jennifer will help us meet market demands and seize opportunities to continue to grow."
