Holcim appoints Board and CEO for North American business

10 January 2025

Switzerland/US: Holcim is progressing towards the planned listing of its North American business and has designated its future board members. The board will comprise 10 members and will become effective following the execution of the spin-off, expected in the first half of 2025, subject to shareholder and customary approvals.

Jan Jenisch, current chair of Holcim and its former CEO from 2017 to 2024, has been designated chair and CEO of the new business. Jenisch will remain Holcim’s chair until the Annual General Meeting on 14 May 2025.

The Board will include nine independent directors: Theresa Drew, Nicholas Gangestad, Dwight Gibson, Holli Ladhani, Michael McKelvy, Jürg Oleas, Robert Rivkin, Katja Roth Pellanda, and Cristina Wilbur.

Carbon Limit appoints Gabriel Carrero as Chief Commercial Officer

US: Gabriel Carrero has taken on the role of Chief Commercial Officer (COO) at Carbon Limit, developer of the CO2-sequestering concrete additive CaptureCrete. Carrero previously served as Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing at fellow additive developer CarbonCure, and has held directorial roles in multiple companies in the cement and concrete chemicals innovation space, including working as COO of Sysdyne Technologies and NITROcrete and as Global Director, Specialty Construction Chemicals at GCP Applied Technologies. Carrero holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Centre Technological University (UNITEC) and an MBA from the University of Carabobo, both in Venezuela.

Mangesh Verma becomes CEO of Cimerwa

21 August 2024

Rwanda: Kenya-based National Cement subsidiary Cimerwa has announced the appointment of Mangesh Verma as its CEO. He succeeds James Oduor, who oversaw the company’s acquisition by National Cement and its acquisition of Prime Cement.

Verma previously served as general manager commercial and operations for Kenya-based food producer United Millers. He previously occupied management positions in various companies in Kenya and India. He has an MBA from Dr RML Avadh University and a bachelor’s in Botany, Zoology and Chemistry from the University of Allahabad, both in India.

Zeotech appoints James Marsh as CEO

21 August 2024

Australia: Zeolite, kaolin and metakaolin producer Zeotech has appointed James Marsh as its new CEO, effective from 9 September 2024. Current CEO Scott Burkhart will then transition to chief operating officer. The appointment is intended to support Zeotech’s entry into large-scale production of high reactivity metakaolin for use in cement and concrete.

Marsh is a director of Australian Kaolin. He previously worked as executive director sales and marketing at Andromeda Metals, after holding managerial roles at multiple minerals companies. He has a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Physics from the University of the West of England, UK.

Managing Director Peter Zardo said "James' technical experience in the industrial mineral and cement industries, especially metakaolin, will be pivotal in accelerating Zeotech's goal of becoming a significant supplier of premium supplementary cementitious materials. Queensland-based leadership is critical to achieving the Company's objectives as we ramp up work programmes and industry engagement, and James will play an essential hands-on role in executing Zeotech's strategy."

James Marsh said "I'm excited to join Zeotech at a crucial stage of the company's strategy, where I can utilise my experience and connections to make it a significant player in decarbonising the construction industry."

Lafarge Africa makes new board appointments

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has announced leadership changes following the retirement of Adebode Adefioye as its chair. Adefioye served as a board member since 2012 and as chair since June 2020. Gbenga Oyebode succeeds Adefioye in the role of chair. Oyebode has 42 years’ legal, corporate governance and business operational experience. He currently also chairs Okomu Oil Palm Company, Nestle Nigeria and CFAO Nigeria. Upon his accession to chair, Oyebode will step down from all Lafarge Africa board committees.

Lafarge Africa appointed Puneet Sharma as chief financial officer. Sharma brings 30 years’ corporate experience, including management roles at Tropical General Investment Nigeria and GSK Nigeria. He is a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a graduate of Panjabi University, Patiala, India.

Adebode Adefioye said "My tenure on the board is filled with good memories. The company has witnessed significant transformation in the last four years and I am happy that this is attributable to the efforts of every member of the board. I feel fulfilled in retiring as chair knowing fully well that I will be leaving the leadership of the board in good hands. I am grateful for the support of the entire board and the confidence reposed in me.”

Asia Cement (China) appoints Shu-ping Hsu as executive director

China: Asia Cement (China) has announced its appointment of Shu-ping Hsu as an executive director, effective immediately. People in Business News has reported that Hsu will be responsible for formulating the overall business strategy of the company in China. He holds a master’s degree in Operation Research from Stanford University, US.

René Normann Christensen becomes CEO of M&J Recycling

Denmark: M&J Recycling has appointed René Normann Christensen as its new CEO, effective immediately. Christensen brings extensive leadership from previous CEO roles at Kohberg Bakery Group, engineering firm Glunz & Jensen and circular food packaging producer Plus Pack. He has a degree in Finance from Syddansk Universitet.

M&J Recycling says that Normann Christensen’s appointment marks a strategic step towards the company's next growth phase. It thanked previous CEO Uffe Hansen for his ‘tremendous job’ in building a new, resilient organisation, ready for future growth.

ChairCarsten Knudsen said “After a successful carve out from Metso in 2021, M&J Recycling has now reached a point on the growth journey where it is necessary to change focus and increase momentum. There is a significant global potential for M&J’s industrial waste shredders, and I am confident that René Normann Christensen will, as the new CEO, strengthen the organisation and take M&J Recycling to the next level.”

Anandakrishnan Balasubramaniyan resigns as Hemadri Cements’ managing director

India: Anandakrishnan Balasubramaniyan has resigned as managing director of Hemadri Cements due to ‘personal reasons and health conditions.’ Balasubramaniyan additionally resigned his seat on the company’s board of directors.

Hemadri Cements appointed Anandakrishnan Balasubramaniyan as additional director and managing director in August 2022.

Holcim appoints Miljan Gutovic as its CEO

31 January 2024

Switzerland: Holcim has appointed Miljan Gutovic as its new CEO, effective 1 May 2024. Gutovic will replace Jan Jenisch, who will continue in his role as chair, for which he is set to stand for re-election at the group’s upcoming 2024 Annual General Meeting. Jenisch is also tasked with leading the planned US listing of Holcim's North American business.

Miljan Gutovic has served on Holcim’s Group Executive Committee since 2018, including as its regional head of Middle East and Africa, regional head of Europe and head of operational excellence. Holcim said that Gutovic’s area leadership helped to strengthen its market positions and deliver industry-leading margins. He also succeeded in advancing decarbonisation as a driver of profitable growth. Prior to joining Holcim as head of marketing and innovation in March 2018, Gutovic spent 12 years with construction chemicals producer Sika, where he became area manager Sika Middle East in January 2016. Gutovic has a civil engineering background and holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

Warren East becomes new chair of C-Capture

17 January 2024

UK: C-Capture has appointed Warren East as its new chair. East was previously CEO of automobiles producer Rolls-Royce and computing company ARM Holdings. C-Capture says that East will bring almost 40 years’ experience in commercialising innovative technologies to its own efforts to develop a scalable, modular model for carbon capture. East is a chartered engineer and holds an engineering degree from Oxford University and a CBE for services to engineering and technology.

C-Capture CEO Tom White said “I am absolutely delighted to announce that Warren will be joining us. His wealth of experience in commercialising novel technologies along with his commitment to the energy transition is a true asset to the company at a critical period in our growth. His expertise in successfully scaling and transforming businesses will be invaluable as we move forward with the commercialisation of our unique technology and expand our investor base.”

Warren East said “I am excited to be joining the team at this pivotal point and to work with the management to scale the business.
