New plant manager for Lafarge Exshaw
05 September 2018Canada: Kate Strachan has become the new plant manager of the Lafarge Exshaw plant in Alberta, the largest in Canada. She took up the position in June 2018.
Born and raised in Warrington, UK, Strachan moved to Canada with her family when she was 10 years old, following her father’s job in marine engineering. She graduated from the University of Victoria with a mechanical engineering degree in 2000 before joining Lafarge Canada’s Richmond plant in the mechanical engineering department. Over the next 12 years she moved up through the mechanical department, eventually becoming the maintenance coordinator and then production coordinator at the plant.
After holding that position for several years she was promoted to production manager for Lafarge’s Sugar Creek plant in Missouri, US, but returned to Canada in less than a year to assist with the Exshaw plant’s US$600m expansion. “The commissioning of a new plant line is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so it was something I couldn’t really pass up,” said Strachan.
After spending nearly two years as the plant’s production manager, Strachan assumed her new role as plant manager in June 2018, taking over from Jim Bachmann, who was the plant manager since 2015.
Wu Xu appointed chairman of Taiyuan Lionhead Cement
05 September 2018China: Wu Xu has been appointed as the chairman of Taiyuan Lionhead Cement. The 54-year old Chinese national is a graduate from the Chongqing Construction Workers College, he holds a master's degree in business administration from Chongqing University and he has attended the China Europe International Business School. From 1982 to 1991 Xu was the chief engineer of Chongqing Building Management Station and was the executive vice general manager of China Chongqing International for Economy & Technology Cooperation in the early 1990s. In 1994 he founded Sincere Group and has since been its chairman and president.
New CEO for Eurocement Group Ukraine
05 September 2018Ukraine: Vitaly Gorgoliuk has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Eurocement Group Ukraine. He succeeds Denis Galchev. Eurocement Group Ukraine is a subsidiary of Russia’s Eurocement Group.
Peter Nelson resigns as chairman of PPC
05 March 2018South Africa: Peter Nelson has resigned as the chairman of PPC. He has been replaced by Jabu Moleketi. The changeover follows the demand in late February 2018 by Prudential Investment Managers, a large shareholder of PPC, that Nelson leave the role. Sydney Mhlarhi and Dawn Earp have also resigned as non-executive directors of the cement producer.
Moleketi is the Non-Executive Chairman of Brait as well as the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), Vodacom and Harith General Partners. He was the Deputy Minister of Finance (South Africa) from 2004 to 2008 and MEC of Financial and Economic Affairs in the Gauteng Provincial Government from 1994 to 2004. During his tenure as the Deputy Minister of Finance, he was the chairperson of the Public Investment Corporation. Moleketi holds a Masters in Financial Economics from the University of London and an Advanced Management Programme from Harvard.
Other personnel changes include the appointment of Noluvuyo Mkhondo and Antony Ball to the board as non-executive directors of PPC.
Mkhondo is an investment banking and corporate finance professional, having spent time at Goldman Sachs International and Anglo American in the UK where she was responsible for mergers and acquisition execution, investment evaluation and strategic long term financial planning. During her time at Goldman Sachs and Anglo American, she executed cross-border transactions in Consumer / Retail, Healthcare, Real Estate and Metals and Mining across the UK, Africa and the Americas. Mkhondo is a Chartered Accountant by profession, having begun her career in the Audit and Advisory Financial Institutions services Team at Deloitte in Johannesburg. In addition, she has an MBA from London Business School where she was a Mo Ibrahim Scholar.
Ball is the co-founder of Value Capital Partners (VCP). Prior to that, his notable business accomplishment was the founding in 1990 and building of Brait, a South African private equity business. Ball is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
Pamela Gaul appointed as director of marketing for Plibrico
14 February 2018US: Plibrico, a single-source supplier of refractory products and solutions, has appointed Pamela Gaul as its director of marketing. She will be responsible for directing all activities related to the strategic development and implementation of marketing initiatives for the organisation.
Gaul previously worked for RR Donnelley (RRD), where she served as a Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development. Much of her career has been spent with the marketing services division of RRD, where she held various marketing positions of increasing responsibility. Prior to RRD she held marketing positions with Riso and Canon Solutions America.
Morocco: LafargeHolcim has appointed George Michos as its new head of its Moroccan subsidiary. He succeeds Marcel Cobus, who moves to the LafargeHolcim executive committee in charge of the Europe region, according to Morocco World News. Previously Michos worked as the managing director of LafargeHolcim’s Heracles General Cement subsidiary in Greece.
New appointments at Adelaide Brighton
14 February 2018Australia: Adelaide Brighton has announced the appointment of Vanessa Guthrie and Geoff Tarrant to the Adelaide Brighton Board as non-executive Directors, effective 8 February 2018. Company Chairman Les Hosking said that the appointments of Dr Guthrie and Mr Tarrant were part of Adelaide Brighton's Board renewal process.
Dr Guthrie has qualifications in geology, environment, law and business management, including a Doctor of Philosophy in Geology. She has more than 30 years' experience in the mining and resources industry across a variety of roles including operations, environment, community, indigenous affairs, corporate development and sustainability. She was previously CEO and Managing Director of Toro Energy Limited and Vice President Sustainable Development at Woodside Energy. Dr Guthrie is currently Chair of the Minerals Council of Australia and a non-executive Director of Santos Limited, Vimy Resources Limited and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr Tarrant has a Bachelor of Business and is a finance executive with over 25 years' experience gained in Australia, the UK and Asia. He is currently engaged in a corporate finance consultancy role with Deutsche Bank, where he has held a number of senior roles since 2002, primarily in mergers and acquisitions and capital markets. Prior to this he held finance roles with Citigroup, National Australia Bank and Price Waterhouse.
New MD at Bamburi Cement
14 February 2018Kenya: Bamburi Cement has announced the appointment of Seddiq Hassani as the new managing director of the company. Hassani will replace Eric Kironde who has been acting Managing Director and Finance Director for the past four months. Hassani joins Bamburi Cement from LafargeHolcim’s Middle East and Africa Region where he was the Head of Growth and Innovation since September 2015, based in Paris, France.
“We are confident that with his strong and wide experience in operational and functional positions, more specifically, in leading transformation and managing growth strategies at both country and international level, he will support the continued growth of the business to achieve its mid- and long-term strategic goals,” said the company board in a statement.
The board also announced the appointment of Nicolas George as a Board Director of Bamburi Cement Limited and Managing Director of Hima Cement Ltd, Uganda.
The cement maker plans to increase its production capacity from 2.3Mt/yr to 3.3Mt/yr in order to meet market demand in 2018, the first phase of its capacity expansion projects in both Kenya and Uganda. The US$38.5m expansion began in January 2017 with a new mill at its Athi River plant.
New Managing Director at Star Cement
07 February 2018India: Shri Sajjan Bhajanka has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Star Cement. He is a Commerce Graduate from Dibrugarh University, Assam. He has business and industrial experience of more than 25 years in the fields of plywood, ferro silicon and granite. He is the Managing Director of Century Plyboards (I) Limited, the largest producer of plywood, laminates and block-boards in India. Mr. Bhajanka is also the Chairman of Shyam Century Ferrous Ltd., one of the leading manufacturers of Ferro Silicon in India. He is also the President of the Federation of Indian Plywood and Panel Industry and All India Veneer Manufacturers Association.
New head of Development & Quality Assurance at w+p Zement
07 February 2018Austria: Christoph Stotter has been appointed as the head of Development & Quality Assurance at w+p Zement. He succeeds Walter Steinwender, who had been working at the Wietersdorf plant since 2008. Stotter studied at the Montanuniversität in Leoben and has since gained experience in process engineering, research and development and product management.
