Taiwan Cement Corporation wins Green Leadership award at Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards 2021.

Taiwan: The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) awarding body has named Taiwan Cement Corporation among winners in the Green Leadership category at its 2021 event. The company won the award for its concrete product traceability system, which enables customers to access production details via QR code. The system achieved 100% traceability in 2020. Taiwan Cement Corporation is committed to carbon neutral cement production by 2050.

Ready Mix USA receives two Tennessee Concrete Association Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence

US: The Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA) has awarded Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence to two Ready Mix USA concrete plants. The TCA awards the prize to member plants which demonstrate environmental leadership, maintain sound environmental management practices and implement environmentally friendly upgrades or plant procedures. Ready Mix USA's Boone's Creek plant in Johnson City earned the award in the Small Plant category, while its Morristown Plant in Morristown earned the Mid Plant category award.

President Marc Tyson said "At Ready Mix USA and Cemex USA, we strive to be good environmental stewards and look for opportunities to improve our processes and operations to be even more sustainable and environmentally friendly." He added "We are proud of the achievements at Ready Mix USA, and we remain dedicated to leading positive change for our industry."

Tanga Cement receives National Occupational Safety Association’s international safety award

Tanzania: The South Africa-based National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) has awarded Tanga Cement its international award for safety. The Daily News newspaper has reported that NOSA considers participant companies from all industries across Africa. Tanga Cement has participated in NOSA since 2018. Managing director Reinhardt Stuart said that the achievement was especially significant as the producer retained its rating as a ‘distinguished’ class company among NOSA awarded companies.

Documentary on cement plant pollution in Meghalaya wins 2021 Yale Environment 360 prize

US/India: Judges from Yale University have awarded first place at the 2021 Yale Environment 360 video contest to Aarti Srivastava for her documentary film entitled the 'Story of Lumshnong.' The Indo-Asian News Service has reported that the film tracks the ‘disaster’ ensuing from the establishment of eight cement plants near the town of Lumshnong in a forested area of Meghalaya state. It claims that the intensive activity has led to water problems, high dust levels in Lumshnong and deforestation.

Cemfree and CCP supply materials for prizewinning garden

UK: An installation consisting of reduced-CO2 walls made with cement-free materials has won the Royal Horticultural Society’s People’s Choice Award, the Silver judge’s award and a Young Gardener of the Year nomination at the Tatton Park Flower Show in Cheshire. DB Group subsidiary Cemfree supplied its cement-free mortar for the garden’s structure, while PPG subsidiary CCP supplied its cement-free Greenbloc concrete blocks. The installation is the first time both materials have been used in combination.

Commercial manager Adam Gittins said “Finding ways to help the construction industry tackle CO2 emissions is an important challenge.” He added “Highly visible community projects like this are helping get the word out about climate change.”

Cemex USA’s Victorville cement plant secures third successive Portland Cement Association Chairman’s Safety Performance Award

US: Cemex USA’s Victorville cement plant in California has won the Portland Cement Association (PCA)’s Chairman’s Safety Performance Award 2021 in the Large category. The award recognises top safety performance. The Victorville cement plant previously won the award in 2019 and 2020. Cemex USA says that the plant recorded zero incidents in 2020. Earlier in 2021, it surpassed four years without a lost time injury to any employee or contractor.

President Jaime Muguiro said “Safety is our top priority, and Victorville cement plant is demonstrating that Zero4Life is possible. We are proud of the continued commitment of our team, and their achievement is a great example of what can happen when everyone is dedicated to safety and works together to look out for one another.”

Titan America’s Pennsuco and Roanoke cement plants secure US Green Building Council Regional Leadership Award

US: The US Green Building Council (USGBC) has granted its Regional Leadership Award to Titan America’s Pennsuco, Florida, and Roanoke, North Carolina, cement plants. The award recognises green building and sustainable practices. The Pennsuco plant implemented 16 zero waste and sustainability programmes. At the Roanoke plant, Titan America subsidiary Roanoke Cement Company (RCC) achieved TRUE Gold Zero Waste certification in 2020 and implemented environmental product declarations (EPDs).

RCC cement manufacturing vice president Zaklina Stamboliska said, "Through our zero waste programs we have implemented native landscaping and other biodiversity advances to our local ecosystems. We have entered into outreach with local universities to educate students and shared our knowledge among our industry, concrete producers and others through work with EPDs. We are building and spreading the word."

Morocco’s Settat cement plant ranked as second most efficient in LafargeHolcim Group

Morocco: LafargeHolcim’s Settat plant has been ranked as the second most efficient integrated cement plant in LafargeHolcim Group. The classification is based on industrial performance criteria in terms of efficiency, cost and sustainable development covering 129 of the group’s integrated plants around the world. Five of the six plants operated by LafargeHolcim Morocco are also reported to be in the Top 20 of this list. The 1.7Mt/yr Settat plant has also become a pilot in the group’s ‘plant of tomorrow" initiative whereby automation technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance will be used to improve its production efficiency further still.

HeidelbergCement launches Quarry Life Award biodiversity project competition

12 May 2021

Germany: HeidelbergCement has launched the Quarry Life Award, a competition for proposed biodiversity-supporting quarry restoration projects. The company says that it is looking for projects which consider quarries’ impacts throughout their entire lifecycle. It is offering a Euro30,000 prize for the winning proposal.

Chief executive officer Dominik von Achten said, “The time for action is now - The World Economic Forum 2021 Global Risk Report has put biodiversity loss among the five most concerning global risks, both in terms of likelihood and impact. With the competition, HeidelbergCement wants to contribute to the global restoration agenda and work towards a net positive in biodiversity. Our sites can provide valuable habitats for a variety of animal and plant species during and after extraction.”

CarbonBuilt and CarbonCure Technologies win carbon capture and storage design competition

20 April 2021

US/Canada: XPrize has named CarbonBuilt and CarbonCure Technologies as the winners of carbon capture and storage (CCS) design prizes worth US$20.0m. The competition ran at two power plants in Wyoming, US and Alberta, Canada. CarbonBuilt won the contest at the Wyoming plant with a concrete-curing based system. The concrete produced has a lower carbon footprint than conventionally produced concrete, according to XPrize. CarbonCure Technologies won the Alberta contest with a design based on carbonating the water used in washing cement trucks. This reportedly formed a concrete-strengthening slurry.

XPrize has partnered with Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation to launch a second round of CCS design prizes worth a total US$100m.
