ACC wins Climate Action Programme 2.0° Orientated award
23 March 2021India: The Climate Action Programme 2.0° has awarded ACC its Orientated award for efforts towards CO2 emissions reduction. United News of India has reported that the award assesses companies on the basis of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s climate-maturity model and the Business Excellence Framework. ACC claimed the national award in the energy, mining and heavy industries category.
Managing director and chief executive officer Sridhar Balakrishnan said, "Sustainable construction and environmental conservation are our core corporate objectives. Through our consistent focus on sustainable business practices, we have emerged as one of the companies with the lowest carbon footprints in the cement industry. This award will motivate us further to continue working towards building a greener planet." He added, “As part of global cement major LafargeHolcim, the company is committed to the Net Zero vision of the group and is an industry leader in combating climate change through consistent commitment to sustainable practices. ACC's sustainability mission is defined by the Triple Bottom Line, which signifies accomplishing three interdependent and mutually reinforcing goals of economic development, social development, and environmental protection.” ACC also became a partner of the UK-based Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA).
Pakistan: Bestway Cement claimed three awards at the Corporate Social Responsibility Awards 2021. The company won the Corporate Social Responsibility in Times of Covid-19 Pandemic award, the Education and Scholarships award and the Green Energy Initiatives award.
It said, “Bestway appreciates its responsibility towards local communities, thus playing a vital role in their socio-economic development such as improving access to health services and education, taking part in the urban development and environmental conservation programs and helping generate employment.
Pakistan: The National Forum for Environment and Health has awarded Maple Leaf Cement the Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2021 for its contributions to environment and community. The Business Recorder newspaper has reported that the company says it encourages a ‘positive impact’ on the environment, employees, community and all other stakeholders through its activities.
Colombia: Switzerland-based finance company RobecoSAM has listed Cementos Argos in the Silver Class in its Sustainability Yearbook 2021. It chose the producer from among over 7000 companies from 61 industries on the basis of its Dow Jones Sustainability Index score.
Cementos Argos Legal and Sustainability vice president María Isabel Echeverri said, “Being included for the eighth consecutive year in the RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook encourages us to maintain our high sustainability standards and allows us to continue improving every day so that we can continue contributing to the development and growth of our clients and to the well-being of millions of people in all the territories in which we are present. US: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded CalPortland’s Rillito cement plant in Arizona with its ninth consecutive Energy Star. Efforts towards energy intensity reduction at the plant included: replacing two preheater tower cyclones, installing 11km of new belting to a quarry belt conveyor, replacing the kiln baghouse fan and dust collector bags, increasing the plant’s focus on energy efficiency by expanding its energy team, conducting more frequent energy meetings and communicating energy efficiency best practices throughout the plant.
President and chief executive officer (CEO) Allen Hamblen said “CalPortland is pleased to accept the EPA’s Energy Star 2020 certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts at the Rillito plant. We continue to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship and Energy Star while also reducing our energy costs through the hard work of our employees and our corporate energy management culture.”
Eqiom wins safety awards from French cement industry union
31 December 2020France: Eqiom’s Rochefort cement plant has won the Safety Trophy from the French cement industry union (SFIC). The award recognises work to reduce all types of workplace accidents. The subsidiary of Ireland-based CRH also won a safety award for its Chelles terminal, recognising its connected approach to logistics management.
Lucky Cement wins fire safety award
21 December 2020Pakistan: Lucky Cement has won an award for use of modern technology to control fire accidents and save lives at the Fire and Safety Awards 2020, organised by the National Forum of Environment and Health. The Frontier Post newspaper has reported that the company is an ISO-9001, ISO-45001 and ISO-14001 certified health and safety leader. The cement producer’s chief operating officer (COO) Amin Ganny said, “At Lucky Cement, we ensure a safe and secure environment for all of our employees and stakeholders associated with our business operations directly or indirectly.”
Raysut Cement wins seven awards at Best Employer Brand Awards 2020
14 December 2020Oman: Raysut Cement received a total of seven awards at the Oman Best Employer Brand Awards 2020 and the Gulf Cooperation Council Best Employer Brand Awards 2020. Group chief executive officer (CEO) Joey Ghose won CEO of the Year at both the Oman and GCC awards. In the former, the company also won Best Use of Technology in the Workplace, Promoting Health in the Workplace and Training Provider of the Year. At the regional awards it won the Talent Management and Leaders of Tomorrow awards.
Acting deputy CEO Salim bin Ahmed bin Alawi Al Ibrahim said, “We operate beyond Oman - in the UAE through our subsidiary Pioneer Cement Company, in Yemen through associates and in East Africa through trading offices as well as new investments. We have also invested in Georgia and have recently acquired a terminal in the Maldives too. We will be expanding further and will be present in different parts of the world supporting infrastructure development in various geographies with Omani clinker and cement. Last year RCC acquired Sohar Cement Company and we believe that our success lies in our highly motivated, skilled and trained employees who deliver the best quality we are known for.”
Tanga Cement wins National Board of Accountants and Auditors best-presented report award
08 December 2020Tanzania: Tanga Cement has won the award for the overall best-presented financial report for the 2020 financial year at the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA). The Daily News newspaper has reported that the award is the company’s fifth consecutive win in the category.
Chief accountant Isaac Lupokela said, “Everyone who prepares auditing knows that there is a competition behind that gives us a lot of motivation to do better. But professionally large accountants are the ones who make sure companies operate. Properly prepared calculations help those who use them to make better decisions.” The producer also won best-presented report in the manufacturers category.
Opterra Karsdorf cement plant awarded Concrete Sustainability Council Gold certificate
02 December 2020Germany: CRH subsidiary Opterra’s Karsdorf cement plant has been awarded a Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) Gold certificate for ecologically, socially and economically responsible cement production, including in its supply chains. The company says that it achieved top marks across 96% of audited areas.
Chief executive officer (CEO) Danilo Buscaglia said, “The CSC certification leads to a continuous increase in the sustainable management of the cement and concrete industry. With this in mind, the Karsdorf plant has provided evidence of responsible behaviour in an extensive auditing process. We are proud that we have achieved gold certification status. At the same time, the good results are an incentive for us to continue working on improvements in the manufacturing process and in product development.”
