Afghan government announces upcoming 1Mt/yr Azeri – Uzbek cement plant

Afghanistan: The governments of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan have agreed to build a new 1Mt/yr cement plant in northern Afghanistan. Trend News has reported that representatives of the three countries met to discuss the upcoming plant, as well as other opportunities for regional cooperation, railways and the role of Afghanistan in the Economic Cooperation Organisation.

Türkiye's global cement exports fall

21 August 2024

Türkiye: Türkiye’s global cement exports declined by 9% to US$2.1bn during the first half of 2024, according to a statement from the Ministry of Trade. In June 2024, exports dropped by 18% to US$336.5m. However, Türkiye's cement exports to Azerbaijan remained steady at US$24.8m during the first half of 2024. In June 2024, exports to Azerbaijan rose by 16.5% year-on-year to US$3.5m. Since the first half of 2023, Türkiye exported cement products valued at US$4.3bn.

Norm Sement to use sludge for power in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan: Norm Sement Company will utilise sludge from drilling wells for powering its cement plant, following an agreement with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), according to Trend. The plant has a capacity exceeding 2.1Mt/yr of cement and 5300t/day of clinker.

A source said "In collaboration with SOCAR, we tried sludge to power Norm Sement last year. Negotiations on a long-term deal are underway. Cooperation to use industrial waste supports the country's green economy strategy.”

Türkiye's cement exports decline

Türkiye: Türkiye's cement exports to Azerbaijan dropped by 10.5% in January - April 2024, to US$16m, compared to the same period in 2023. In April 2024, exports to Azerbaijan fell by 16% to US$4.1m, according to the Turkish Ministry of Trade. Türkiye's global cement exports decreased by 8% to US$1.4bn from January to April 2024. Cement exports in April 2024 experienced a 9.2% year-on-year decline, to US$339m. From April 2023 – April 2024, Türkiye's total cement exports were valued at US$4.5bn.

Azerbaijan's construction materials sector grows in first two months of 2024

Azerbaijan: The latest figures from the State Statistical Committee show a 35% year-on-year increase in the value of building materials produced in Azerbaijan, to US$102m in January - February 2024. Cement production notably surged to 546,000t in the two-month period, a 30% increase. However, clinker production fell by 17% year-on-year. The production of ready-mix concrete increased by 60%, but construction lime production dropped by 57%. These trends continued an increase in building materials production from 2023, when it rose by 32% from 2022 levels.

Azerbaijan grows its cement production by 4.6% in 2023

Azerbaijan: Cement production in Azerbaijan increased by 4.6% year-on-year to 3.73Mt in 2023, data from the State Statistics Committee has shown. Clinker production rose even more sharply, by 37%, to 3.87Mt. BNI IntelliNews has reported growth of 32% year-on-year in the overall value of building materials in 2023, to US$694m.

Holcim Azerbaijan to build cement terminal in Jabrayil in 2024

Azerbaijan: Holcim Azerbaijan plans to build a 2000t-capacity cement terminal in the Araz Valley Economic Zone in Jabrayil. AzerNews has reported that Holcim Azerbaijan will build the terminal in phases, commencing in 2024. The producer’s offering in the local market includes its ECOPlanet Inshaatchi and ECOPlanet Optimal reduced-CO2 cements. In a later phase, it will install a dry adhesive and ready-mix concrete batching plant at the facility. Planned investments at the site total US$2m.

Commercial director Sergiu Stoicov said "We aim to bring new methods to help the construction industry build sustainably. Through Inshaatchi and Optimal, we are taking a step in the race for CO2 reduction and the use of alternative raw materials. Holcim Azerbaijan is the first company in the Caucasus to offer green cement.”

Azerbaijan produced 3.42Mt of cement throughout the first 11 months of 2023. This represents a 4.1% year-on-year rise from 11-month 2022 levels. Meanwhile, clinker production rose by 10% year-on-year to 3.51Mt.

New directors appointed at Norm

Azerbaijan: Norm has appointed Ülkü Özcan and Stephan Sollberger to its board of directors, according to the Trend News Agency.

Ülkü Özcan holds over 20 years of experience in the cement industry. She has held various positions in Cimsa and held the position of its chief executive officer from 2018 to 2020. Since then she has been working in the energy & telecommunication cable business in Türkiye. Additionally, she has held various roles at Afyon Cement, including a member of the board of directors, a representative for the Global Cement and Concrete Association and a member in the Audit Committee of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Türkiye. She has also worked for Lafarge Turkey previously. Özcan is a business graduate from Marmara University and has completed the Advanced Industrial Marketing and Strategy Program at INSEAD Business School in Paris.

Stephan Sollberger holds over 30 years of experience in cement and concrete manufacturing companies. From 1992 to 2001, he occupied various positions at Holderbank Cement und Beton. Until 2006, he worked as the manager of the technical centre of Holcim Switzerland and later as a plant director, also in Switzerland. He also holds managerial experience at Jura Group. Since 2020, he has held the role of Chief Operations Director at Landqart. Sollberger is a graduate from the University of Applied Sciences Zurich and the University of Applied Sciences Bern.

Azerbaijan's cement production rises in the first half of 2023

14 July 2023

Azerbaijan: Total national cement production was 1.76Mt during the first half of 2023, according to the State Statistics Committee. This corresponds to a 1.9% year-on-year rise from first-half 2022 levels. Clinker production rose more sharply, by 16% to 1.82Mt, while ready-mix concrete production rose by 15% to 1.77Mt.

OJSC to establish cement terminal in Araz

Azerbaijan: OJSC has bought a site in the Araz Valley Economic Zone Regional Industrial Park in Araz, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Local press has reported that company plans to build a cement terminal at the site. In addition, it will also establish a ready-mix concrete plant there. Its total planned investment in the project is US$2m. When operational, the new complex will employ 20 local people.
