HeidelbergCement Georgia plans grinding capacity expansions in 2022

Georgia: HeidelbergCement Georgia plans to invest in additional grinding capacity at both of its cement plants. The subsidiary of Germany-based HeidelbergCement says that it will complete expansion work at both plants by the 2022 production season. It is also contemplating the possibility of clinker capacity expansions.

In early July 2021, Georgia experienced a cement shortage due to the release of pent-up demand from infrastructure projects and reduced imports from Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Holcim Azerbaijan begins cement exports to Georgia

14 July 2021

Azerbaijan: Holcim Azerbaijan has exported its first of planned regular weekly shipments of cement to Gerogia. The Azer News newspaper has reported that transport partner ADY Express, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan Railways, will carry out the orders. It has allocated 50 train cars to make the trip four times monthly, resulting in total shipments of 15,000t/month.

Norm Cement’s cement plant receives American Petroleum Institute Certificate

Azerbaijan: The US-based American Petroleum Institute (API) has certificated Norm Cement’s cement plant in Baku’s Garadagh district. The Turan Information Agency News has reported that the certificate confirms that the plant meets the highest standard for oil well cement. This will enable the company to begin the export of oil well cement produced at the plant.

Holcim Azerbaijan participates in National Green Marathon

Azerbaijan: Holcim Azerbaijan, part of Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim, has launched its participation in the Azerbaijan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources’ National Green Marathon with the planting of 1000 trees at its Garadagh cement plant. Turan Information Agency News has reported that the initiative aims to plant 1 million trees nationally in 2021.

Technical director Ali Huseynov said, "We have a common goal and value - sustainable development. We should apply principles of sustainability in each work and in every step. We are ready to demonstrate our best practices in environmental protection.” He added, “Our work is not over. We should also care for these trees and install an irrigation system. For this purpose, the work necessary for treatment and use of the wastewater in the irrigation system has started, and with this we can save clean water, contributing to the environmental protection."

Staff changes at LafargeHolcim Russia and Holcim Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan/Russia: Holcim Azerbaijan has appointed Khalid Samaka as its chief executive officer (CEO). Previously he worked as the technical director at LafargeHolcim Russia since 2017.

Samaka has been succeeded as technical director at LafargeHolcim Russia by Artur Buzyurov. Previously he was in charge of cement plants in Kolomna and Voskresensk. He has worked for the company since 2001.

Georgia imports 0.3Mt of cement from Azerbaijan in first 10 months of 2020

Georgia: Georgia imported 296,000t cement from Azerbaijan from January to October 2020, a decline of 20.2% year-on-year. Data from the Georgian National Statistics Office (Geostat) and the Trend News Agency also shows that cement imports for this period cost US$14.5m.

Azerbaijan records 11-month cement production fall

Azerbaijan: Cement producers produced 3.0Mt of cement in the first 11 months of 2020, down by 3% year-on-year from the same period in 2019. Ready-mix concrete production rose by 11%, according to the Trend News Agency. The total value of building products rose by 25% to US$389m.

Iranian cement production grows by 14% to 36Mt in first half of year

Iran: Cement production rose by 14.4% year-on-year to 35.6Mt in the first half of the local calendar year that started in March 2020 from 31.1Mt in the same period in the previous year. The sector exported 5.8Mt of cement with a value of US$128m to 28 countries according to the Mehr News Agency. India, Afghanistan, Russia, Iraq, Qatar, Kenya, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China and Oman were among the export destinations of cement.

Iran exports 5.85Mt of cement in first five months of 2021 financial year

21 September 2020

Iran: Data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) shows that cement producers exported 5.85Mt of cement in the first five months of the local 2021 financial year, which began on 20 March 2020. The value of cement exports fell by 52% year-on-year to US$128m from US$266m, according to the Tehran Times newspaper. Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan were the top destination for the exports. Cement was also sent to India, Russia, Qatar, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, and Oman.

In its 2020 financial year Iran exported a total of US$7.0bn-worth of building materials and produced 85Mt of cement against a domestic consumption of 65Mt.

Sustained Visions, Qazax Sement Zavodu and DAL Teknik Makina commission 1.3Mt/yr Gazakh cement plant

Azerbaijan: Germany-based Sustained Visions has announced the commissioning of Akkord Cement subsidiary Qazax Sement Zavodu’s 1.3Mt/yr-capacity integrated Gazakh cement plant in Ganja-Gazakh region following a phase-two upgrade completed in collaboration with the owner and DAL Holding subsidiary DAL Teknik Makina. The plant, built in 2013, had an original capacity of 0.9Mt/yr.

Sustained Visions praised the collaborative effort, which has resulted in a “significant reduction in specific energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions” for the plant, and “shows very stable performance.” Managing director Ralf Slomski noted that, in spite of the coronavirus outbreak, the company was able to maintain a project management team of five staff on the site at peak periods.
