Wei Rushan appointed president of the World Cement Association
01 November 2023UK: The World Cement Association (WCA) has appointed Wei Rushan as its president. He succeeds founding president Song Zhiping in the post.
Wei has been the president and executive director of CNBM since late 2022, having had a range of senior roles within CNBM Group over the last 15 years. He obtained a doctoral degree in political economy from the School of Economics of Renmin University of China in 2007. Wei also serves as president of China Building Materials Engineering Construction Association.
Algeria: Holcim Algeria successfully commissioned a new 18,000t/day clinker loader at the Port of Djendjen in late October 2023. The cost of the equipment was Euro3m. APS News has reported that port authorities have ordered two further such machines from China.
Gansu Qilianshan Cement to issue shares
31 October 2023China: China National Building Material (CNBM) says that its subsidiary Gansu Qilianshan Cement has issued shares. Reuters has reported that CNBM stated the reason for the issuance is ‘asset acquisition’ as part of the group’s on-going restructuring.
Tangshan Jidong Cement’s sales fall in first nine months of 2023
30 October 2023China: Tangshan Jidong Cement recorded US$3.05bn in sales during the first nine months of 2023, down by 18% year-on-year from US$3.74bn during the first nine months of 2022. Its nine-month net loss was US$44m, against a profit of US$223m one year previously.
Xinjiang Tianshan Cement’s sales drop in third quarter of 2023
26 October 2023China: Xinjiang Tianshan Cement, a subsidiary of China National Building Material (CNBM), recorded sales of US$3.68bn during the third quarter of 2023. This corresponds to a 19% year-on-year rise compared to third-quarter 2022 levels. Reuters has reported that Xinjiang Tianshan Cement’s net loss was US$12.4m, while in the corresponding quarter of 2022 it recorded a profit of US$78.3m.
China: China Shanshui Cement recorded sales of US$1.92bn during the first nine months of 2023, down by 15% year-on-year from US$2.25bn during the first nine months of 2022. Reuters has reported that the company made a US$25.7m loss during the period, compared to a profit of US$139m in the corresponding period of 2022.
Domicem lights up new kiln at Palenque cement plant
25 October 2023Dominican Republic: Domicem held a ceremony marking the lighting up of the kiln on the new second production line at its Sabana Grande de Palenque cement plant in San Cristóbal province in mid-October 2023. Company engineers, staff from China-based CBMI Construction and representatives from parent company Colacem were present for the event. The cement company signed a contract with China-based Sinoma Construction for a 3500t/day clinker production line in 2021. The project had a reported investment of US$120m. The official inauguration of the new line is scheduled to take place on 22 November 2023 and the President of the Dominican Republic is expected to attend.
Ghana: The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has shut down Wan Heng Ghana’s 0.5Mt/yr grinding plant in Tema after the company failed to pay US$60.6m in taxes. GhanaWeb reports that the GRA gave the China-based company 10 days in which to pay its taxes, otherwise the closure will continue. Wan Heng Ghana operates in the country using the Sol Cement brand.
China: China National Building Material (CNBM) has warned of an anticipated year-on-year decline in its profit during the first nine months of 2023. Reuters has reported that the group forecast a drop of 70% from nine-month 2022 levels. Declining cement prices contributed to the anticipated drop.
China: Anhui Conch has nominated He Chengfa as the chair of its Supervisory Committee in anticipation of the retirement of Wu Xiaoming. His nomination will be submitted to the company’s shareholders at a future extraordinary general meeting. The Supervisory Committee is the monitoring body of the company, accountable to the shareholders at its general meetings.
He Chengfa, aged 57 years, is a senior engineer. He graduated from Wuhan Industrial University specialising in mechanical design and manufacturing and joined Anhui Conch in 1990. Notable positions he has held include that of deputy engineer-in-chief of the Ningguo cement plant, head of the equipment department and deputy general manager of the company. He is currently a deputy general manager, executive deputy officer of the technology centre of Anhui Conch Holdings Company, a director and executive deputy general manager of Santan (Anhui) Institute of Science and Technology and chair of the board of directors of Anhui Conch Construction Materials Design Institute.
