CHC Resources Corporation reports deadly accident at Kaohsiung slag cement plant

22 June 2023

Taiwan: A 57-year-old worker died after falling into slag cement in the production line of CHC Resources Corporation's Kaohsiung slag cement plant at 16:00 on 22 June 2023. CNA English News has reported that the victim was submerged for a prolonged period. A second man, aged 51, also entered the cement, but escaped with 'minor injuries.' The workers had been carrying out cleaning work on the line. Local authorities reportedly said that CHC Resources Corporation had 'No proper safety protocols' in place for the activity.

Weather suspends operations at Sanghi Industries' Sanghipuram cement plant

16 June 2023

India: Sanghi Industries suspended operations at it Sanghipuram cement plant in Gujarat from 13 June 2023, ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy on 15 June 2023. EB News has reported that Sanghi Industries has established refuges for its workers and host community, and has prepared food and first aid deliveries, emergency transport and monitoring. The company said that it will restart operations when normal conditions resume and in compliance with the advice of the government.

Times Now News has reported that Cyclone Biparjoy killed two people and injured 22 on the coast of Gujarat. Extremely heavy rain is forecast for 17 June 2023 in Kachchh District, where the Sanghipuram cement plant is located.

Investigation after boy dies in cement quarry lagoon

25 April 2023

Uganda: Hima Cement and local authorities are investigating the circumstances in which an eight-year-old boy allegedly drowned on 21 April 2023 in a quarry lagoon at a site formerly operated by Hima Cement. Poshele Bwambale Isingoma, a resident of Katoke village in Bugoye sub-county, was reportedly among other minors who had gone out to play. Isingoma had attempted to follow ducks that were swimming close to the side of the lagoon but slipped in and got into difficulty.

Hima Cement’s country CEO Jean-Michel Pons said the fatal incident occurred at a quarry previously operated by Hima Cement, saying “On behalf of Hima Cement, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for this unfortunate tragedy.” Pons added that the company’s management was ‘co-operating fully with the authorities in their investigation to establish the cause of the incident.’

Aumund Group announces death of Franz-Walter Aumund

10 February 2023

Germany: Aumund Group has reported that its chair Franz-Walter Aumund died on 4 February 2023. He was 78 years old. He was the third generation of the Aumund family to run the company after his grandfather Heinrich Aumund founded Aumund Patente in 1922.

A farewell ceremony will be held at Aumund Group’s headquarters in Rheinberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, on 14 February 2023.

Tokyo Cement Group announces death of board member Ranjeevan Seevaratnam

20 January 2023

Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement Group has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Ranjeevan Seevaratnam, a member of the company's board of directors, who died on 19 January 2023. Seevaratnam's board experience spanned multiple companies in the cement, activated carbon, agriculture, construction, consumer goods, engineering, rubber and transport industries. He held memberships in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.

Tokyo Cement described Seevaratnam as a 'visionary thought leader.'

Lucky Cement mourns death of chair Muhammed Yunus Tabba

03 January 2023

Pakistan: Lucky Cement announced the death of Muhammed Yunus Tabba ‘with deep sorrow and grief’ on 3 January 2023. At the time, Tabba was serving as chair of the company’s board and as a non-executive director of the company.

Lucky Cement instructed investors that it will fill Tabba’s former roles ‘in due course, as per the requirement of law.’

Cemex USA Knoxville cement plant worker dies in coal pile collapse

14 November 2022

US: A coal pile collapse at Cemex USA's Knoxville, Tennessee, cement plant killed one worker at the plant earlier in November 2022. Local press has reported that Thomas Mitchell, aged 21, died at the scene.

Cemex says that it is cooperating with an on-going investigation into the disaster.

Cement company human resources head arrested in suspected contract killing

30 September 2022

India: Police in Madhya Pradesh have arrested the head of human resources of a cement producer in connection with the killing of trade union leader. The victim, Manish Shukla, worked at a cement plant in Maihar in the district of Satna. The Times of India newspaper has reported that Shukla was fatally wounded in a knife attack by three men on 19 September 2022. His killing sparked protests outside the Maihar police station, in which other cement plant workers reportedly participated.

Maihar is the location of cement plants belonging to KJS Cement, Birla Corporation subsidiary RCCPL and Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech Cement.

Ramco Cements to inaugurate 2Mt/yr Nandyal cement plant

26 September 2022

India: Ramco Cements plans to inaugurate its upcoming Nandyal cement plant in Kalvatala, Andhra Pradesh, on 28 September 2022. The Sakshi Post newspaper has reported that the plant will have a cement capacity of 2Mt/yr. Ramco Cements’ planned total capital expenditure (CAPEX) investments during the 2023 and 2024 financial years (1 April 2022 – 31 March 2024) are expected to reach US$154 – 167m.

Two West Bengali welders fell to their deaths at the site of the upcoming Nandyal cement plant on 25 September. The welders had been working on a conveyor system when it snapped. The Times of India newspaper has reported that both workers died immediately. Police have informed their relatives and are conducting post-mortems.

Police intervene in battle for Cruz Azul’s Tula cement plant

27 July 2022

Mexico: State police have intervened during a confrontation between rival groups for control of Cruz Azul’s Tula cement plant in Hidalgo. A group of workers, allegedly numbering 1000 people, aligned to the faction that controls the majority of Cruz Azul’s cement plants travelled to the site in Jasso by bus and taxi on the evening of 26 July 2022, according to La Jornada newspaper. Another group defending the plant reportedly blocked local roads and used sticks, pipes and stones to repel the assault. The police managed to deter most of the convoy travelling to the plant. However, eight deaths occurred when some of the attackers made it through.

The Tula cement plant is the sole remaining Cruz Azul unit still controlled by former company director Guillermo ‘Billy’ Álvarez and his associates. The rest of the company is under the command of Cruz Azul’s directors José Antonio Marín and Víctor Manuel Velázquez.
