India: Employees of a contract firm working at Dalmia Cement’s Bokaro grinding plant in Jharkhand have allegedly killed a worker in an attack on 15 March 2022. The deceased’s roommate has also been missing since then. Both workers had been in trouble with their employer for refusing to work overtime. Operations reportedly continued as normal at the plant until other loading workers began a protest on 16 March 2022.
Dalmia Cement spokesperson Shyamlal Sahu said “The matter was brought to the notice of local police and they have started their probe. We are cooperating with them to bring the culprits to justice. We will work with the contractor – Durga Enterprises – to extend support to the bereaved family. We, at Dalmia Bharat, accord highest priority to maintaining internal harmony and a healthy working environment, and will work with our contractors towards ensuring that such untoward incidents do not happen in the future.”
GCC worker dies following explosion at Chihuahua cement plant
28 February 2022Mexico: GCC has reported that a worker at its Chihuahua cement has died in hospital following an explosion on 25 Feburary which injured five others. The company says that it activated all safety protocols in response to the disaster and coordinated its actions with the responding authorities. It continues to support the investigation into the cause of the blast.
The company said “Unfortunately, one of the six injured died in hospital. We are currently in contact with his family, to whom we have expressed our deepest condolences, and with the families of our other injured collaborators to make all our support and resources available to them at this difficult time.”
Worker killed at UltraTech Cement’s Jafrabad plant in Gujarat
02 February 2022India: One worker has been killed and two injured at UltraTech Cement’s Jafrabad plant in Gujarat. Police report that during the incident hot liquid raw material fell on the workers as they cleaned a silo during a plant shutdown, according to the Times of India newspaper. The accident took place on 30 January 2022. The investigation continues.
Sani Dangote dies
17 November 2021Nigeria: Dangote Cement has reported that Alhaji Sani Dangote died on 14 November 2021. He was the brother of the company’s founder and chair Aliko Dangote.
Sani Dangote was a businessperson with over 30 years’ experience in various sectors of the Nigerian economy including manufacturing, agriculture and oil services. He was the Vice President of Dangote Industries and sat on the board of several other companies. He was also the deputy chair of the African Gum Arabic Producers Association, a fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Shipping and president of the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association.
Disaster at Saurashtra Cement’s Porbandar cement plant kills three construction workers
13 August 2021India: Three construction workers have died after scaffolding collapsed inside the chimney of Saurashtra Cement’s Porbandar cement plant in Gujarat. India Today Online News has reported that a team of ten builders was performing repair work before the accident occurred. Four of the seven survivors remain trapped. District officials have established contact with them via a drone.
US: The death of a maintenance worker has been reported at Buzzi Unicem USA’s Hercules Cement at Stockertown in Pennsylvania. The cause of the fatality has not been released pending an investigation by state authorities and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, according to the Express Times newspaper. The incident occurred on 26 July 2021.
Dalmia Bharat Group director Jai Hari Dalmia dies
21 July 2021India: Dalmia Bharat Group director Jai Hari Dalmia died on 8 July 2021 at the age of 76.
Dalmia’s father Jaidayal Dalmia founded the company in 1939 before Dalmia and his brother Yadu Hari Dalmia later took charge of the business in the 1980s, according to Forbes. Together they built the cement division up from one cement plant to 13 cement plants in 2020.
Dalmia held a Bachelor of Engineeringdegree in electrical engineering from Jadavpur University and a Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne. He had more than 47 years of experience across various industries including refractories, sugar and cement. Dalmia was involved in research and development and had personally received several patents for the company's businesses.
Arawak Cement reports fatality at plant in Barbados
04 January 2021Barbados: A worker has died following an accident at Arawak Cement plant in St Lucy. Two employees suffered burns whilst they attempted to fix a blockage at the unit, according to the Caribbean News Agency (CANA). An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Torxx Kinetic Pulverizer’s Nicolas Belanger dies
30 September 2020Canada: Torxx Kinetic Pulverizer has announced the death of vice president of sales Nicolas Belanger. He died unexpectedly a week before his 50th birthday. He was the former co-owner of Machinex Group, where he worked for over 20 years. He was also the co-founder and president of Waste Robotics.
“Our hearts are heavy, and we’re stunned by the untimely and devastating passing of our colleague, friend and industry icon,” said Peter Everson, the chairman of Torxx Kinetic Pulverizer. “Nicolas had been instrumental in moving our company - and the industry - forward over the past 25 years. He was a talented engineer and strong business leader, whose industry knowledge and experience were second to none. He is greatly missed, and we share the grief of his family, friends and colleagues.”
Police investigate murder of a Chinese worker at cement plant quarry in Democratic Republic of Congo
19 August 2020Democratic Republic of Congo: Police are investigating the murder of a Chinese worker at the quarry of a cement plant that is being built near Kolwezi, the capital of Lualaba province. The employee of Carrilu was killed in an attack on the site by ‘bandits,’ according to the Agence France Presse. Two other people were also assaulted in the incident. Armed attacks against businesses and residents have been reported regularly in the region.
The Lualaba Carrilu cement and lime plant is a project being managed by China-based Zijin Mining Group. It is expected to start operation in autumn 2020.
