Fives performs remote commissioning to replace a burner at a cement plant in East Asia
15 September 2021Asia: France-based Fives says it has commissioned a Pillard Novaflam Evolution burner for an unnamed cement plant in East Asia. Due to the travel restrictions linked to the coronavirus pandemic, the commissioning was carried out remotely with the cooperation of the customer. A 143MW coal and petcoke burner with oil as a start-up fuel was supplied as a replacement for an old burner. The aim of this replacement was to increase the kiln capacity to 9000t/day without impacting its NOx emissions whilst maintaining a good clinker quality despite a high sulphur content in the petcoke. The installation is now in production and an intervention is planned in the coming weeks to further optimise the operation.
Fives refurbishes kiln at SOKA’s Quessoy plant
03 February 2021France: Fives has refurbished a rotary kiln at SOKA’s (Société Kaolinière Armoricaine) kaolin plant at Quessoy. Work on the project included: implementing a new nose-ring fitted with a downstream seal, to reduce false air flow and improve brick-lining lifetime; machining the tyres, replacing of the rollers and installing a new lubrication system, to improve the kiln scanning and enable an homogenous wear of the contact areas; and installing a grease spraying system fitted with a new girth gear housing to prevent advanced wear initiated by grease contamination. SOKA specialises in the extraction, processing and calcination of raw kaolin, refined kaolin and calcined kaolin in France and Ukraine.
Fives selects Wallix to secure production data

The supplier says that this will give cement plant users secure access to energy bills, cost optimisation, site maintenance and production line analytics.
Fives CortX chief executive officer David Zak said, “Fives provides flexible and tailored solutions to optimise industrial sites’ production and maintenance by capitalising on field data. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the core of our systems and cybersecurity at the forefront of our minds. Therefore, we ensure the security of flows and data by design. Fives acquires Dufieux
29 October 2020France: Milling and process equipment supplier Fives has acquired Dufieux, a “high-tech machine-tool designer and manufacturer” and developer of the Milling Mirror System (MMS). The company says that Dufieux’s activities complement Fives’ machine-tool offerings for the cement and general industry markets, which are sold through the Forest-Liné, Liné Machines, Giddings & Lewis and Cincinnati ranges. No amount for the acquisition has been disclosed.
High-precision machines division president Raphaël Constantin said, “Despite a difficult situation, we are continuing our efforts to develop effective, innovative and more environmentally friendly solutions which are better suited to future production requirements. Dufieux’s offering supplements our range of high-performance machine-tools, which already includes an unrivalled portfolio of technologies. This will also strengthen our capacity for innovation and industrial flexibility.”
Fives receives government loan
15 July 2020France: The government has given a 90% guarantee for a Euro200m loan taken by process technologies and automation specialist Fives from six banks. The company said that the loan, “allows Fives to secure its required liquidity in a time when the Covid-19 crisis has slowed down the business activity in many of its markets. It will also contribute to finance the group’s technological and commercial developments to prepare the future and confirm its positioning as a key player in the industry of the future.”
France: Fives’ sales across all business lines rose by 2.5% year-on-year to Euro2bn in 2019, mainly due to positive currency effects. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 28% to Euro120m from Euro94m due to “a strong increase in orders for equipment and small systems in almost all segments except cement.” However, the group reported a loss of Euro22.6m in 2019, up from 19.9m in 2018.
The equipment manufacturer noted two cement industry trends impacting upon its process technologies division. Firstly, European and American players “continue to streamline their portfolios and cut costs.” Secondly, in the rest of the world, “the market still pays little heed to environmental and energy issues,” meaning that decisions are made at prohibitively low price levels.
