Sri Lanka: Siam City Cement subsidiary Insee Cement says that it is operating at full capacity utilisation across its network, which includes a 3.6Mt/yr-integrated cement plant. The Daily News (Sri Lanka) newspaper has reported that the producer is responding to a shortage in the country due to the partial suspension of imports. It said that it has been able to do this thanks to the uninterrupted supply of raw materials by its parent company.
Chief executive officer Gustavo Navarro said, "Our consumers can be assured as always of full-capacity production and supply of Insee Cement to the market. We trust that we can curtail any unnecessary pressure on the Consumer Affairs Authority and government regulators who have been pressed for price hikes and hope to quell any disruptions to market supply across Sri Lanka."
Vietnam: Siam City Cement subsidiary Insee Vietnam has ordered an Autopac 3000 truck loading system from Germany-based Beumer. The supplier said that the fully automated system palletises and loads cement at a rate of 3000 bags/hr.
Chief executive officer Philippe Richart said, “As we are continually implementing a fully automated dispatch process in Insee Vietnam, we will continue to look to invest in new technologies that Beumer are providing in this area.”
Sri Lanka: Insee Cement has extended the concessionary rate for its Sanstha cement product for current and former Sri Lankan armed forces personnel. The Daily FT newspaper has reported that the company first launched the scheme in August 2020.
Insee Cement chairman Nandana Ekanayake said, "We are thrilled to be offering Sri Lanka's most loved homebuilding cement brand Sanstha to all armed forces personnel island-wide.” He continued, “It was important for us to show all servicemen - those active, retired or disabled - our appreciation, as a mark of respect and gratitude for the sacrifices they have made for us, especially during these difficult times."
Insee Cement appoints Gustavo Navarro as head in Sri Lanka
07 October 2020Sri Lanka: Insee Cement has appointed Gustavo Navarro as its chief executive officer (CEO) of its operations in Sri Lanka. He succeeds Nandana Ekanayake, according to the Nation newspaper. Ekanayake will remain at the company as chairman of the board. Navarro has previously held chief executive positions for Holcim in Serbia and Russia, and for CRH in Romania.
Sri Lanka: Siam City Cement subsidiary Insee Cement says it is ramping up production at its 0.4Mt/yr Galle grinding plant. The unit in Southern Province opened in 2018. The Daily FT newspaper has reported that the grinding plant, along with Insee’s Puttalam integrated plant, will have the production capacity to serve 100% of domestic demand. The producer added that production and supply of its products had returned to normal following disruption caused by coronavirus-related lockdown measures.

INSEE Cement launches first sustainability report

Insee Cement distributes cement to flooded areas in Sri Lanka
01 February 2019Sri Lanka: Insee Cement is working with the local government to supported rebuilding and renovation efforts in flooded parts of Northern Province. The cement producer has distributed 10 bags of its Insee Sanstha product to over 250 displaced families, according to the Daily News newspaper. It said it would continue to monitor the situation and offer more support.
Insee Cement starts using Hambantota International Port
17 January 2019Sri Lanka: Insee Cement is the first cement company to use the newly diversified Hambantota International Port. Bulk carrier Ithaca Patience docked at Hambantota to discharge 27,150t of slag, according to the EconomyNext. Thusith Gunawarnasuriya, Director of Procurement and Logistics, Insee Cement, the consignee of the slag cargo, said that the company is considering monthly or bi-monthly shipments via Hambantota. Insee Cement has previously used ports at Colombo, Trincomalee and Galle.
Insee Group signs quarry agreement with the International Union for Conservation of Nature
09 January 2019Sri Lanka: Insee Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to protect limestone hills in the company’s quarrying sites in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The ultimate goal of the partnership is to turn the limestone quarrying sites into forests through rehabilitation programmes.
In Sri Lanka, the agreement is intended to strengthen Insee Cement’s capacity to rescue and release threatened wildlife, prepare mine restoration guidelines and carry out annual ecological monitoring of restored mines in Insee Cement’s quarry sites in Aruwakkalu and Puttalam.
“In Sri Lanka we have worked with IUCN since 2007 to ensure conservation in quarry sites, as the partnership is focused on delivering practical solutions which protect Sri Lankan ecosystem. We take pride in meeting the expectations of our local stakeholders and join hands with our group and OpCo’s on the dedicated commitment to enhance forestry and quarry management in Asia,” said Nandana Ekanayak, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Insee Cement.
Sri Lanka: Insee Cement’s new grinding plant at Galle is scheduled to be completed in August 2018. Chairman Paul Hugentobler said that the company had spent US$50m on the project, with US$5m of this total on environmental features, according to the Daily News newspaper. The 0.45Mt/yr mill is being supplied by Germany’s Loesche. It will grind clinker and granulated blast furnace slag into Portland Limestone Cement and Portland Slag Cement (PSC) with a throughput of up to 60t/hr.
