France: Worker’s at LafargeHolcim’s Martres-Tolosane cement plant have gone on strike over salary negotiations. A coalition of unions says that the company has refused to increase salaries despite a recovery in the cement market, according to France Info radio. The plant employs 110 workers. In mid-2017 LafargeHolcim announced that it was spending Euro100m on building a new clinker production line at the site.

India: ACC and Ambuja Cements, the two Indian subsidiaries of LafargeHolcim, have put their merger plans on hold. ACC said that its board was of the opinion that there were ‘certain constraints’ blocking its merger plans, according to the Press Trust of India. However, it added that a merger was its ‘ultimate’ objective. Ambuja Cements made a similar statement. Both companies joined Holcim in 2005, before becoming part of LafargeHolcim in 2015.

Nigeria: Ashaka Cement plans to complete its 16MW captive power plant in early 2019. The subsidiary of Lafarge Africa and LafargeHolcim started the US$30.5m project in 2017, according to the Nigerian Guardian newspaper. Once operational the power plant will supply additional electricity to the national grid as well as supplying the neighbouring cement plant.

Morocco: Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions (TKIS) has won a contract from LafargeHolcim, to supply a new 3500t/day cement plant in Morocco. The project will cover the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the new plant. The line will be built in the Souss Massa region near Tidsi. Start-up of the plant is scheduled for the first half of 2020.

TKIS will provide engineering, procurement and construction for the entire clinker production line, ranging from raw material preparation to clinker storage, and a grinding facility for solid fuels. The main components include a 1000t/hr primary crusher, a longitudinal additives storage facility, a circular stockpile with a storage capacity of 12,000t, a Quadropol QMR² roller mill with an output of 290t/hr and a blending silo of 4600t. The kiln system consists of a five-stage, single-string polysius preheating tower, a two-pier rotary kiln and a
Polytrack clinker cooler. The line is completed by a ball mill for solid combustibles and a clinker stock with a total storage capacity of up to 65000t.

Greece: Dimitris Hanis has been appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Heracles Group, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim. Hanis began working in Heracles Group in 2003 and has since taken executive positions in the group, according to the Athens News Agency. Heracles Group is the largest cement producer in Greece, with more than 100 years of presence in the market. It operates a network of 33 production and commercial facilities in the country.

India: LafargeHolcim plans to spend US$214m towards building a new cement plant in the state of Rajasthan. The 3.1Mt/yr plant will be operated by its local subsidiary, Ambuja Cement, and it will target markets in the north of the country, including Delhi. Commissioning for the plant is scheduled for the second half of 2020.

"India is the second biggest global cement market and is forecasted to continue to see high growth rates. We are excited to invest in this highly attractive market to further strengthen our footprint and to reinforce our leading building materials position in India," said Jan Jenisch, Group chief executive officer (CEO) of LafargeHolcim.

India: Ambuja Cements has benefited in 2017 as the impact of demonetisation and general sales tax eased. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim reported that its sales rose by 12% year-on-year to US$1.58bn in 2017 from US$1.41bn in 2016. Its operating earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBTIDA) rose by 14.9% to US$300m from US$261m. Its cement sales volumes rose by 8.7% to 23Mt from 21Mt.

“During the year, we focused on providing specific solutions to address customer needs, value offerings, particularly for the retail segment products, and made strong investments in building brand equity. Our strategy to focus on premium products, core markets and managing costs has delivered higher sales and EBITDA growth,” said Ajya Kapur, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ambuja Cements.

US: Two LafargeHolcim US cement plants have been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star award. The EPA recognised the Holly Hill plant in South Carolina and the Devil’s Slide plant in Morgan, Utah.

“Receiving the Energy Star award this year at two sites is an affirmation of the hard work all our employees are devoting every day to meeting our environmental goals,” said John Stull, chief executive officer (CEO), US Cement.

This recognition is the eighth time the EPA has awarded both the Holly Hill and Devil’s Slide plants with the Energy Star award since 2009.

Ivory Coast: Jean-Claude Brou, the Minister of Industry and Mines, has inaugurated a new mill at LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast’s plant at Abidjan. The new mill has increased the unit’s production capacity to 2Mt/yr, according to the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse. LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast re-used a ball mill from a Spanish cement plant that was dismantled and shipped to Abidjan. The mill uses a 4.5MW motor and the cement producer says it is the largest horizontal ball mill in French-speaking West Africa. The project cost US$28.5m.

France: Lafarge Syria’s former director Christian Herrault has claimed that Eric Chevallier, the former ambassador to Syria, knew about payments to armed groups by the cement producer. French investigators questioned Herrault in the presence of Chevallier, according to a source quoted by the Agence France Presse. Herrault allegedly said that he had met Chevallier several times, that he knew about the situation and that he said that the company should stay as, “…these problems won't last long."

Jean-Claude Veillard, the group's former security boss, has said he regularly informed French intelligence services about its operations in the region. Investigators have also found evidence of meetings between Lafarge and diplomats, including a note suggesting that one took place in Paris in January 2013.

The investigation is attempting to determine whether LafargeHolcim’s predecessor company Lafarge Syria paid terrorist groups in Syria and how much managers knew about the situation.
