US: Martin Marietta Materials has completed its US$2.3bn takeover of Lehigh Hanson’s West Region business. The acquisition enlarges the company’s cement assets by two new plants and related distribution terminals, as well as targeted downstream operations, in California and Arizona.

Moving and shaking in the USA
29 January 2014Two stories from the US have drawn our attention this week, even with a US$1.3bn cartel fine in Brazil, more new business in Africa, the possible closure of CBR's white cement plant in Belgium and strange metrological goings-on in India also in the headlines.
Firstly, it was announced that Colombia's major cement producer Cementos Argos has agreed to acquire Vulcan Materials' building material assets in Florida. Argos, active in the US since June 2011 when it acquired its Harleyville and Roberta plants from Lafarge, will more than double its capacity in the country from 2.7Mt/yr to 6.2Mt/yr and go from a small player to a significant force in the western US.
Argos may have moved at just the right time. Despite suffering disproportionately in what is often termed the 'Great Recession' in the US, Florida's cement market is fundamentally solid, with significant residential construction and a good commercial construction baseline. If the PCA's expectations that the US will consume 80Mt/yr of cement in 2014 and a release of that much talked-about 'pent-up demand' are realised, Argos could be in a position to make good sales.
Indeed, Argos' move takes on even more significance in the light of the second US story from this week, which sees Texas Industries (TXI) taken over by Martin Marietta. The acquisition, which comes on the back of a failed bid by Martin Marietta for Vulcan Materials in 2012, also makes perfect sense for the company. Indeed, Martin Marietta's chief executive, C Howard Nye, said, "We like the Texas market a lot."
And well they should. Developments around the Eagle Ford shale gas reserves in the centre of Texas have led to a building boom in terms of both new constructions and oil well cement. Despite this, TXI announced a loss of US$17.6m in the quarter to 30 September 2013, although it saw higher sales. It blamed interest repayments. There are obviously clear gains for Martin Marietta in buying TXI, but it had better have a plan to sort out TXI's finances.
For all the talk of major restructuring in China , and mergers and acquisitions in India, it is the US cement industry that is showing the most movement so far in 2014. Could this be the year when things finally look up?
US: Texas Industries Inc's (TXI) fiscal second-quarter loss widened as the construction materials company reported higher product costs and a jump in interest expenses, masking broad sales growth that boosted the top line. Though TXI reported higher sales for cement, concrete and the company's aggregate operations, the results were weaker than expected.
The company, which sells cement and other building materials in Texas and California, has struggled to compete against more geographically diverse peers. However, TXI has reported stronger sales so far this fiscal year.
For the quarter that ended on 30 November 2013 TXI reported a loss of US$17.6m compared to a loss of US$11.1m in the quarter that ended on 30 November 2012, while net sales grew by 25% to US$209m. Its gross margin narrowed to 6.8% from 7%. Sales by its cement segment, the company's largest top-line contributor, increased by 12% on higher shipments and a slight increase in prices. TXI announced that while pricing has improved, its prices still remain well below levels seen prior to the recession.
TXI cements sales up by 20% to US$104m in Q1 2013
03 October 2013US: Texas Industries (TXI) has seen its cement sales rise by 20% year-on-year to US$104m for the first quarter of its 2013 – 2014 financial year, compared to US$87.3m in the same period in the previous year. Cement shipments rose by 17% to 1.31Mt from 1.12Mt.
Although the company noted a general improvement in construction markets, in the cement sector it also saw an increase of sales and prices in its Texas market. CEO Mel Brekhus stated that the start up of the company's new kiln in Central Texas was the most successful of any he had been involved with in his career.
TXI reported a net income of US$429,000 for the first quarter of 2013 – 2014, up from a net loss of US$2.66m in the same period in 2012 – 2013. Net sales rose by 34% to US$233m from US$175m.
PCA stands by brighter US cement future
18 September 2013US cement consumption may have disappointed some in the first quarter of 2013 but solid growth lies ahead, according to the Portland Cement Association (PCA). Just how solid that growth will be remains open to interpretation.
PCA chief economist Ed Sullivan forecast 8% growth in cement consumption at the start of 2013. Now's its been halved to just 4%. Yet he's standing by the hint of good news ahead, upping the growth from 2014 to 9.7%.
Figures from the major US cement producers present a mixed picture. The major multinational cement producers mostly suffered from the weather in early 2013. Lafarge saw its cement sales in North America drop by 23% year-on-year for the first half of 2013 to 4.4Mt from 5.7Mt in the same period of 2012. Cemex's cement sales in the US rose by 3% but no specific figures were released. Holcim's cement sales in North America fell by 7% to 5Mt from 5.4Mt. HeidelbergCement's cement sales in the North America grew by 5% to 5.7Mt from 5.4Mt.
Of the rest, Texas Industries reported a rise in cement shipments of 29% to 2.23Mt from 1.73Mt for the six months to the 31 May 2013. Titan saw sales in the US rise by 10% to US$258m.
Preliminary United States Geological Survey data for June 2013 suggests that the increase in portland and blended cement shipments in the US slowed in the first half of 2013. In 2011 32.1Mt were shipped, in 2012 37.0Mt were shipped and in 2013 37.2Mt were shipped.
Meanwhile the construction figures US Department of Commerce mostly suggested growth but not without the odd jitter. Construction spending fell slightly in June 2013. Total construction spending adjusted seasonally fell by 0.4% to US$869bn due to a fall in non-residential construction. Since then though the July 2013 figure hit US$901bn, the highest since June 2009.
Accordingly, in his forecast Sullivan pins his hopes on the residential sector in the near term. It has seen consistent growth since October 2012. However other industry commentators, like the American Institue of Architects, have focused on poor growth in non-residential construction.
Let's hope Sullivan's got it right.
TXI posts improved results for 2012-13
17 July 2013US: Texas Industries, Inc. (TXI), the leading cement producer in Texas and a major player in the Californian cement market, has reported financial results for the quarter and year ending on 31 May 2013. Net income for the quarter was US$44.1m. Net income including income net of tax from discontinued operations of US$28.5m. Net income for the quarter ending on 31 May 2012 was US$60.2m
Net income for the year ending on 31 May 2013 was US$24.6m and included a pre-tax gain on the disposition of discontinued operations of US$41.1m. Net income for the year ending on 31 May 2012 was US$7.5m.
"The fourth quarter certainly benefited from the continuing recovery of construction activity in our major markets," said Mel Brekhus, CEO of TXI. "Shipments of all products reflect double digit percentage increases compared to a year ago."
"We also achieved two strategic milestones during the quarter," continued Brekhus. "The commissioning of our 1.4Mt/yr cement kiln at our central Texas plant (Hunter) was finished late in the quarter and we completed the acquisition of 42 ready-mix plants in east Texas. Both events significantly improve our ability to take advantage of the strong recovery under way in Texas."
US: Texas Industries (TXI) has announced that its board of directors has named Tom Ransdell as its chairman of the board effective from 18 June 2013. Ransdell has been an independent director of TXI since 2005 and has many years of experience in the construction materials industry. Ransdell now fills the position of chairman created by the untimely death of Bob Rogers on 11 June 2013.
Rogers was the son of the founder of TXI, Ralph Rogers, and was CEO of the company from 1970 until 2004 when he retired. From 2004 until 11 June 2013 he served as chairman of the board of TXI.
TXI is the largest producer of cement in Texas and a major cement producer in California. TXI is also a major supplier of construction aggregate, ready-mix concrete and concrete products.
TXI Hunter cement plant second kiln commissioned
22 May 2013US: Texas Industries (TXI) has announced that the second kiln at its Hunter cement plant has achieved operational status. The 1.4Mt/yr kiln line started in November 2012 and has realised its design performance capabilities and is producing efficiently.
"The success of this process is the direct result of the hard work of a dedicated team. The challenges faced when starting up a new kiln line are many and the teamwork and communication of our people made all the difference," said Jamie Rogers, TXI's Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
The company also announced that it will accelerate maintenance and upgrade projects on the original production line, Kiln 1. Pending successful completion of plant maintenance and equipment upgrades, TXI expects to bring Kiln 1 back online during the first quarter of 2014. Combined with the newly-added capacity of Kiln 2, the upgrades will double TXI Hunter's cement production capacity to 2.3Mt/yr.

Texan standoff
29 August 2012Texas Industries (TXI) made the surprising move this week of appealing to the US authorities to investigate 'unfair' imports from Greece and the Republic of Korea. Of note was the accusation that imports from these countries had risen by 40% from 2009 to 2011, with a further rise over the first six months of 2012.
Given the distances involved and the rising optimism shown for the North American market in the latest financial results for the cement industry, targeting imports might at first seem odd. However looking at US Geological Survey (USGS) data shows that for January to May 2012 the top cement importers to the US, after Canada, were the Republic of Korea and Greece. Mexico, the USA's other land neighbour, could only manage fourth.
According to USGS data Texas was the leading cement-producing state in the US in 2011. In 2011 total imports of hydraulic cement and clinker from South Korea rose by 64% to 1.40Mt from 0.86Mt in 2009.
By customs districts Texas imported 0.99Mt in 2011 or 15% of the US total. Alarmingly though, Texas has already imported 0.77Mt from January to May 2012. If this rate continues for the rest of 2012 Texas could be facing a total imported figure of 1.84Mt, a rise of 85%!
Given that the Global Cement Directory puts Texan capacity at just under 14Mt/yr this might explain why one of the state's biggest producers has decided to take action. The problem of 'cheap' Greek imports looks likely to get worse as the economic troubles of the Eurozone drag on, especially if Greece exits the zone. If that happens, any Greek producer that can still afford to make cement may well be able to undercut the domestic production of any country willing to import it. TXI's move might be seen as a pre-emptive strike 'shot across the bows' to discourage increasing US demand for sucking in more imports, in order to shore-up demand for domestic production (and to firm up domestic pricing).
However, one place Greece or South Korea will have difficulty exporting their cement to is the moon.
Serious thought on creating cementituous materials on the moon dates back decades but last week NASA awarded US$135,000 to UC San Diego structural engineer Yu Qiao for research on the subject using materials that are readily available on the moon. Given that it currently costs from at least US$4m/t to put mass into low earth orbit, the lunar cement industry can rest easy from the threat of cheap Greek imports for the time being.
US: Texas Industries (TXI) has requested that the US Department of Commerce and the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center investigate and counteract 'unfairly' priced portland cement imports from Greece and the Republic of Korea.
In a letter to the organisations, TXI, the largest producer of cement in Texas and a major cement producer in California, stated that it believes that imports from Greece and Korea are being sold at less than a 'fair' value and are benefiting from government subsidies. In addition it alleged that these imports have materially injured Texas cement producers and their employees.
Imports from Greece and Korea to Texas increased by almost 40% from 2009 to 2011, and increased another 14% from the first half of 2011 to the first half of 2012. Allegedly these imports have taken substantial sales volumes from Texan producers resulting in underutilisation of local production capacity and reduced profits.
