New maintenance plan adopted at Iceland Cement terminal

Iceland: Iceland Cement has invested Euro0.1m in a specialised washboard for cement trucks. The installation includes strainers for both solids and oil. The company emphasised its social responsibility to keep the trucks, a ‘prominent feature’ in the local area, clean.

Eurocement receives nine new dump trucks from Volvo

Russia: Eurocement has received nine new Volvo FM 8x4 heavy-duty dump trucks for its Kavkazcement and Maltsovsky Portland Cement plants. The vehicles have a capacity of 32t and include Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system. The cement producer hopes to increase the volumes of limestone it transports from each plant’s quarries by 15%. It has spent Euro1.3m on the new trucks.

Dangote Cement lorry kills eleven

10 September 2019

Nigeria: A Dangote Cement lorry suffered a brake failure on a hill in Nasarawa State and collided with a people carrier, killing all 11 passengers. Passengers of other vehicles were also injured. The Punch newspaper has described the lorry as ‘heavily-laden.’

This follows the head-on collision of a Dangote lorry with a bus in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in August 2019, which killed three and injured all 69 other bus passengers. The lorry, carrying 45t, significantly over its rated capacity, had suffered a brake failure. Both incidents are under investigation by the company.

McInnis Cement closes US$380m refinancing deal

Canada: McInnis Cement has closed a US$380m refinancing deal. US$230m will be provided by an increase McInnis Cement’s senior loan from a syndicate of 11 Canadian and international banks and the remaining US$150m comes in the form of a loan by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and Beaudier. This refinancing also makes it possible to repay a bridge loan granted by BlackRock in 2016.

The cement producer also provided details on various projects it is undertaking. Two new cement silos will be built at the company’s integrated cement plant at Port-Daniel–Gascons. Nearly 200 workers will be mobilized on the site during the peak construction period of the two silos, during the autumn of 2019.

Its Bronx Terminal in New York, US has doubled its loading capacity for customers. A second truck-loading lane is now fully operational. A new 40,000t warehouse is currently under construction at its Providence Terminal in Rhode Island, US bringing the total storage capacity to 75,000t. A new truck-loading lane will also be added and commissioned in time for the 2020 spring construction season. McInnis Cement has also confirmed the charter of the NACC New Yorker, a 24,000t self-unloading vessel, in conjunction with Nova Marina Carriers. It will join other vessels in its fleet including the NACC Quebec (14,000t), the Cielo di Gaspesie (35,000t) and the Resolute unloading barge.

Cementa uses gas-powered truck for bulk cement deliveries

Sweden: Cementa has started using a gas-powered truck for bulk cement deliveries. The Volvo FH460 LNG will use the Skövde cement plant as its main base and delvier cement to customers in the west of the country. Typically gas-powered vehicles in Sweden use a mixture of 50% biogas and 50% natural gas, although this may change is greater amounts of biogas become available. The truck is owned and operated by Tommy Bremans Åkeri in Skövde, a supplier to XR Logistik.

Cementos Argos switching to electric trucks in Medellín

Colombia: Cementos Argos is switching its trucks in Medellín to electric-powered vehicles. The new trucks will be powered by 600v batteries and be capable of carrying 4t of cement, according to the La Republic newspaper. The cement producer is planning to expand the electric-powered trucks to other cities subsequently.

Belaz supplies dump truck to Cherat Cement

Pakistan: Belorussian company Belaz has sold a dump truck to Pakistan for the first time. The 45t vehicle will be used to transport of gypsum and clay to a plant owned by Cherat Cement, according to the Dawn newspaper. It has been supplied via the distribution company Greaves. The cement producer plans to buy up to 15 such vehicles in the current year.

Wincanton wins concrete products transport deal with Aggregate Industries

UK: Wincanton has won a five-year deal with Aggregate Industries for the distribution of concrete products from a majority of its UK manufacturing sites. Under the new agreement, logistics firm Wincanton will operate a dedicated fleet of specialised vehicles, backed up by its national network, from 10 factories to customers across the country. This deal is in addition to two existing contracts, which cover distribution of bulk and packed cement from Aggregate Industries’ Cauldon works and the provision of Readymix assets.

"We have witnessed Wincanton’s ability to deliver on major national contracts at our Cauldon bulk operation. We have also seen how its commitment to continuous improvement can generate material benefits across the business. We are looking forward to the Wincanton team joining our concrete products operation," said Shaun Elliott, Head of Logistics, Concrete Products at Aggregate Industries.

Eurocement signs deal to buy 1000 vehicles from Kamaz

15 February 2019

Russia: Eurocement has signed a deal to buy 1000 gas-powered vehicles from Kamaz. The framework agreement will run until 2022. It was signed at the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi. No value for the deal has been disclosed.

The cement producer has also signed a memorandum of cooperation with Rosavtodor, the Federal Roads Agency, to increase the use of concrete in road construction. The organisations will hold a discussion on regulatory standards for the use of mineral binders in road construction and Rosavtodor will consider a pilot project.

Belaz supplies dump trucks to APO Cement

Philippines: Belorussian company Belaz has sold dump trucks to the Philippines for the first time. 7555 Series 55t trucks will be used to operate in the sand quarry of APO Cement, a subsidiary of Cemex. The trucks include extended bodies, multiple-disk oil cooled brakes and additional fuel filters.
