Dalmia Cement signs with Paytm for payment digitisation
04 November 2020India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has awarded a contract to payment solutions specialist Paytm for digitisation of its payment processes. United News of India has reported that Paytm will enable customers to use Paytm Wallet, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and other cashless means in purchasing Dalmia Cement’s products from over 30,000 dealers and retailers across 22 Indian states and union territories, according to the producer.
Head of marketing and executive director Pramesh Arya said, “Dalmia Cement's emphasis on being digital first has helped our dealers and retailers carry out their day-to-day business transactions easily. Paytm has always stood for ease of use and convenience in the world of digital payments. Through this partnership, we aim to help our dealer community accept contactless and secure payments using Paytm Wallet, UPI, debit or credit card and online banking.” He added, “The idea is to maintain social distancing, reduce cash handling and minimise the risk of coronavirus exposure. This partnership is yet another step in Dalmia Cement's pursuit to bring Future Today - our brand credo - to life.”
Tan Thang Cement commissions control system package from ABB
30 October 2020Vietnam: Tan Thang Cement has commissioned a control system package supplied by Switzerland-based ABB for a new cement plant in Nghe An province. The order included an ABB Ability System 800xA DCS (Distributed Control System), which integrates control, electrical and communication systems, ABB Ability Knowledge Manager and ABB Ability Expert Optimizer products which are integrated with the DCS, and basic communication and electrical system infrastructure and equipment.
"This was a challenging project many years in development and we delivered the control system package within our customer's timeframe. We used remote support and provided all necessary training to ensure that the plant team could complete the commissioning accurately and safely," said Nguyen Hoang Giang, Division Manager for Process Industries, ABB Vietnam.
On the electrical side, ABB provided a 110kV air insulated substation, with a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system based on ABB Ability System 800xA for Power Control, as well as telecommunications, and high voltage primary and secondary equipment to support the electrical infrastructure. ABB also delivered power transformers, distribution transformers, a motor control centre, auxiliary control centre, emergency diesel generator, DC power supply, various field devices, and related commissioning services.
FLSmidth acquires KnowledgeScape
02 October 2020Denmark: FLSmidth has announced the signing of a takeover agreement with mineral processing digital solutions specialist KnowledgeScape. No value for the acquisition has been disclosed.
Chief Digital Officer (CDO) Mikko Tepponen said, “The addition of KnowledgeScape’s advanced solutions to FLSmidth’s already robust digital ENABLR portfolio will deliver an expanded and exciting range of benefits to cement industry customers, from increased automation to improved reliability and enhanced productivity, increasing the total output of plants by 4% - 10%. At the same time, their solutions reduce power, water and reagent consumption, contributing significantly to the goals of FLSmidth’s MissionZero sustainability strategy.” He added, “With this acquisition, FLSmidth reinforces a strong track record of integration with a special emphasis on the retention of local talent.”
Holcim Philippines announces digital platform partnership
19 August 2020Philippines: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Holcim Philippines says that it has partnered with digital news platform providers Pinoy Builders. The commercial partnership involves Holcim Philippines providing Pinoy Builders with its cement, concrete and health and safety expertise.
Marketing and innovation senior vice president Ram Maganti said, “The Philippines is a very digitally-savvy country and the majority of professionals in the Philippines' construction industry are millennials who are 'digital natives.' With its steadily-growing number of subscribers and followers, Pinoy Builders is helpful in our efforts in engaging and positively influencing the construction industry. We are excited in continuing to contribute to this platform to let Filipino building professionals know how our offerings and solutions can help them in their projects.”
Ambuja Cement digitises supply chain
13 July 2020India: Ambuja Cement has modernised its logistics operations by digitising its supply chain to “improve visibility, deliver quality customer service and optimise cost.” The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the company has integrated all aspects of raw material, fuel and equipment supply and product deliveries on a single online platform in order to “enhance overall efficiency and productivity.” Company director Martin Kriegner said additionally that the digitisation will aid in, “fuel mix optimisation and strategic sourcing, helping to mitigate rising input costs.”
Ambuja Cement’s 3.0Mt/yr greenfield expansion to its integrated 1.5Mt/yr Marwar Munda, Rajasthan plant is scheduled for commission by 1 January 2021. The company has a master supply agreement with ACC aimed at maximising the consistency of cement supply to the Rajasthan market once the new 4.5Mt/yr plant becomes operational.
Colombia: Cementos Argos says that 70% of its total cement orders between 1 January 2020 and 9 July 2020 were placed online via its Argos One automated booking, order management and delivery monitoring platform. The platform handled 81% of orders of cement in the Dominican Republic, 39% in the US, 34% in Honduras and 19% in Panama. The company said, “Argos One has become even more relevant in the current context and will continue to evolve in function to continue its purpose of providing extraordinary solutions to clients.”
Indonesia: Thailand-based Siam Cement Group (SCG) and PT Marindo Inticor have announced the launch of PT Renos Marketplace Indonesia, a digital marketplace to connect Indonesian customers with SCG’s products. Online Stock Business News has reported that ownership of the company is shared 51:49 between SCG subsidiary Better Bee Marketplace Company Limited and PT Marindo Inticor. The joint venture has registered capital of US$1.26m.
Digital trends in cement
24 June 2020Many people have been adapting to home working over the last few months due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdowns. The digital tools have been present for years but current events were all that was needed to force everyone to try it out en masse, moving much of the back office, supporting and managerial functions to the homes of staff. Some of this communal clerical working may never come back in the views of some commentators. Other functions related to networking, such as sales or knowledge transfer, have moved to different channels like webinars and social networking or have resorted to older methods like using the telephone more. The balance between real world and remote networking may change but a return to some level in favour of the former seems likely.
The core processes of cement manufacture are resistant to this trend as workers need to be on site to mine limestone and maintain production lines. Although, that said, Global Cement Magazine has covered examples of remote commissioning and maintenance of equipment at plants in recent issues. Prior to this there has been steady work on remote monitoring of equipment and plants by both suppliers and producers and moves by cement companies to focus on digital operation such as LafargeHolcim’s ‘Plants of Tomorrow’ Industry 4.0 from 2019 or Cemex’s work on autonomous cement plant operations with Petuum.
Some ways in which cement companies have coped with social distancing recently have been revealed as they have published their best practice guides. Last week, for example, Holcim Philippines was promoting its various online customer interaction tools including its existing sales platform and a new online customer engagement program to ‘provide updates on the company’s directions, share knowledge and best practices on Health and Safety and to bond with business partners while quarantines are in place.’ Other companies have done similar things like the Cemex Go platform. On the supplier side there have been various announcements as companies have pushed their digital offerings. Meanwhile, the companies offering automation or remote operation products have been handed a unique stage to promote their wares.
Another example of cement companies trying something new in digital is the pilot that was announced this week by Siam Cement Group with the Bank of Thailand to test out payment systems using a central bank digital currency (CBDC). This likely has very little to do with the cement industry and much more to do with the sheer size of that conglomerate in Thailand. As the second largest company in the country, it’s an obvious target to try out something new like this at scale. The project will run from July 2020 until the end of the year. It will build on work that the central bank has carried out on Project Inthanon, a project between the bank and the eight financial institutions to study and develop a method for domestic wholesale funds transfer using wholesale CBDC. Any benefits using a CBDC eventually bring to Siam Cement Group and other producers in the country are likely to be limited to finance departments but savings are always welcome wherever they arise.
One cautionary note to consider though is that introducing changes to national currency systems can have impacts upon cement companies through general effects to the economy as a whole. The classic example of this in recent years is that of banknote demonetisation in India in late 2016. Cement production growth declined for about half a year at the time due to the disruption it caused.
The downside of this increased reliance on digital products and platforms is increased exposure to cybercrime. There was a rare good-news story in this area recently when Schmersal Group revealed that it had intercepted a network attack in progress in May 2020. It promptly took its IT network offline and disconnected its various systems, from the telephones, to its business software, to its production processes and automated storage systems, at all of its locations. Systems were then gradually cleansed and restored over the next two weeks. Schmersal’s response is commendable but chillingly it ended its press release by saying that, “the attack demonstrated that standard protection from antivirus programs and a firewall is powerless in the event of a targeted attack with previously unknown malware.” Companies had the same vulnerabilities before the pandemic but the increased reliance on digital platforms has heightened the potential risk. As we mentioned last time we covered this topic companies that admit to large scale malware attacks are hard to find most likely because it looks bad. Although since that article was published, Buzzi Unicem admitted that a ransonware attack on its information systems originating from its Ukrainian operations were delaying its financial disclosures in mid-2017.
In the longer term it will be interesting to see how much of the altered working patterns or methods created by the coronavirus lockdowns remain afterwards. The current situation isn’t quite like the ‘disruptive innovation’ business theory pedalled by Clayton M Christensen that has led in-part to established companies setting up start-up incubators to try and spot the next big new thing. Yet, existing trends are being sped up and this may lead to some surprises that were coming down the road anyway. For example, buying someone shares in video networking tool Zoom would have made a nice Christmas present this year! Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Schmersal fights cyber attack
19 June 2020Germany: Schmersal says it is once more connected to the internet and fully operational following a cyber attack on 20 May 2020 that forced it to shut down its local networks and go offline. During the incident the engineering company reacted to a malware injection in progress and stopped the criminals from completing the attack. Systems were gradually restored over the following two weeks.
Managing director Philip Schmersal said, “Situations like these really highlight how dependent companies now are on IT. Making telephone calls, e-mails, accepting orders – we had to find alternative channels for every process. We worked extremely hard to keep in contact with our customers in every conceivable way and to keep them up to date.” Schmersal thanked “customers for their understanding and all employees for their tremendous dedication in this testing time.”
FLSmidth to accelerate digitisation
05 June 2020Denmark: FLSmidth has said that, following the appointment of Mikko Tepponen as its chief digital officer (CDO), it is embarking on an acceleration of digitisation projects and an expansion to its portfolio based on ‘direct collaboration and co-creation’ with customers. FLSmidth said that this aims at ‘increasing productivity in the cement industry through optimisation and efficiency, including by reduction of fuel and raw material consumption and of process heat, time and emissions, security enhancement and many other areas’ that would benefit from a digitally integrated approach.
Tepponen said, “Digitisation and sustainability go hand in hand. When you succeed in digitising key processes in any large-scale industry, you tend to see clear benefits in areas such as energy consumption, waste reduction and resource use. Without a serious focus on digitisation, it will be impossible for us at FLSmidth to reach our MissionZero sustainability ambitions.”
