Sublime Systems secures ASTM C1157 designation for Sublime Cement reduced-CO2 cement
18 September 2023US: Sublime Systems’ Sublime Cement reduced-CO2 cement has received an ASTM C1157 designation. InterestingEngineering News has reported that this enables builders to use it in various projects in line with international building codes. Sublime Systems’ cement consists of lime and silica produced by electrolysis using non-carbonate calcium compounds.
CEO Leah Ellis said "Our aim is to make a profound and lasting impact on global CO2 emissions. The ASTM C1157 designation is a validation of our efforts to integrate low-carbon innovation into quality construction materials."
SaltX and SMA Mineral agree plant for electrified lime plants
05 September 2023Sweden: SaltX Technology and SMA Mineral have agreed a joint roadmap until 2028 to work on developing and building electrified lime plants. The agreement means that mineral producer SMA Mineral plans to build several units where SaltX's electric arc calciner (EAC) technology will be installed. The companies have worked together since mid-2022.
Carl-Johan Linér, the chief executive officer at SaltX, said "We have now signed a long-term cooperation agreement in which the respective parties' roles and responsibilities are regulated, which is an important step for both parties."
SaltX Technology is intended to allow SMA Mineral to halve its CO2 emissions by 2027. The agreement allows SMA Mineral to use the EAC technology to produce quicklime in the Nordic region. The forecast is that SaltX will receive orders for 7 - 9 EAC units from SMA Mineral during the contract period. SaltX intends to market and sell the EAC technology to lime manufacturers outside the Nordic region and other stakeholders, such as cement manufacturers, worldwide. SaltX and SMA Mineral are accelerating work on SMA Mineral’s first electric lime plant at Mo i Rana.
Maerz to supply lime kiln for UNACEM
30 August 2023Peru: Switzerland-based Maerz has received an order from UNACEM (Unión Andina de Cementos) to supply a 600t/day PFR lime kiln. The kiln will be built and operated jointly at Tarma by UNACEM and Mexico-based lime producer Calidra Group. UNACEM already runs its integrated Condorcocha cement plant in Tarma. The supplier says that the kiln will be ready to install future CO2 capture technologies due to airtight sealed charging and discharging systems. It will also save up to 20% of electrical energy compared to conventional rotary piston blowers by using high-pressure fans to provide the process air.
Planning is underway for the project and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Maerz’ scope of supply will include the petroleum coke firing system, skip winch, charging and discharging systems, high-pressure fans, hydraulic unit and control system. According to the schedule, commissioning should take place in the first half of 2025.
Alba Group to build lime plant in Kosovo
23 June 2023Kosovo: Alba Group has announced plans to build a lime plant in Kosovo, the first in the country. The company has appointed Switzerland-based Maerz Ofenbau to execute the project. The supplier said that it looks forward to many years of cooperation with Alba Group.
UK lime sector commits to net zero by 2040
22 June 2023UK: Mineral Products Association Lime (MPA Lime), the body representing the UK lime sector, has launched the Net Negative 2040 Roadmap. The association said that the roadmap sets out the strategy for its to 'go beyond net zero' by 2040. The industry will rely on the deployment of fuel switching, carbon capture, renewable energy sources and green transport technologies, among other approaches. It called on the government to support its aims through the implementation of carbon accounting, subsidisation of renewables and decarbonisation technologies, the development of green hydrogen infrastructure, ensuring that UK lime can remain competitive in the UK and overseas markets.
MPA Lime director Mike Haynes said “Each lever will contribute to decarbonisation – many initiatives are happening already or will come on stream this decade." He added "The combination of using biomass fuels with carbon capture and lime product carbonation will result in removal of 250,000t/yr of atmospheric CO2, making the sector net negative overall. Other levers, especially indirect emissions and transportation, require broader collaboration and enabling action by government and other industries.”
Through their actions to date, MPA Lime members reduced their absolute CO2 emissions by 25% between 2005 and 2022.
Peru: Unacem and Grupo Calidra have received clearance from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) to launch a joint venture in the lime sector. Carretera News has reported that the new company will establish a 600t/day lime plant, at an investment cost of US$40m. The partners expect to commission the plant in early-mid 2025. Unacem, which holds a 51% stake in the venture, has reported that it and Grupo Calidra will fund the growth from a combination of their own finances and bank loans.
Sweden: Nordkalk has produced lime at its Koping lime plant using 30% biofuel as alternative fuel (AF). The producer now aims to increase the substitution rate to 50%. Nordkalk subsidiary Kalkproduktion Storugns recently began trialling 100% liquid biofuel substitution in continuous operations at its Larbro lime plant. ENP Newswire has reported that both projects are part of a CO2 emissions reduction initiative in partnership with the Swedish Energy Agency and Umea University.
UK: Aggregate Industries, Breedon, Lhoist and Tarmac have announced the launch of the Peak Cluster, a carbon capture and storage cluster of cement and lime plants. The partners aim to eliminate 3Mt/yr of emissions from operations across their plants in Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire by capturing 100% of their CO2 emissions. Progressive Energy will oversee the capture and transportation of CO2 from the plants for storage below the Irish Sea. Possible storage partners for the cluster are Liverpool Bay CCS or the upcoming Morecambe Net Zero storage project. When operational, the Peak Cluster will eliminate 40% of emissions from UK cement and lime production. Participating cement plants are Aggregate Industries' 1Mt/yr Cauldon cement plant in Staffordshire, Breedon's 1.5Mt/yr Hope plant in Derbyshire and Tarmac's 0.8Mt/yr Tunstead plant in Derbyshire.

This launch demonstrates the commitment of cement and lime producers to transition to net zero to secure the future of these important industries, and the vital products they produce, in a net zero world.”
Peter Steinkellner appointed as Head of Technical Marketing Cement & Lime at RHI Magnesita
05 April 2023Austria: RHI Magnesita has appointed Peter Steinkellner as Head of Technical Marketing Cement & Lime for Europe, CIS & Türkiye. He has held a number of marketing roles for the refractory producer since 2015. Prior to this he worked Lafarge for seven years as a quality engineer.
Maerz commissions lime kiln for Bangkok CaO
22 February 2023Thailand: Switzerland-based Maerz has commissioned a new 150t/day lime kiln at Bangkok CaO’s plant at Saraburi. The kiln is the third Parallel Flow Regenerative (PFR) unit that Maerz has supplied to the site following previous installations in 1996 and 2008. All the kilns at the plant use waste oil as a fuel.
