LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast launches online sales

24 June 2019

Ivory Coast: LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast has launched online sales of its products on the Jumia e-commerce platform. The online store is aimed at individual and small business customers, according to the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse. The project is starting in a pilot phase in Abidjan and Bingerville. Deliveries of orders made online are coordinated with the company’s Binastore network around the country.

Peruvian court upholds US$2m competition fine on UNACEM

30 May 2019

Peru: The Supreme Court has upheld a fine of nearly US$2m by the National Institute for the Defense of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) on UNACEM. The penalty was levied due to UNACEM and its distribution network refusing to allow retailers to sell cement made by its competitor, according to the Gestión newspaper. INDECOPI said that in 2014 UNACEM and its collaborators refused to allow retailers to stock its Sol brand of cement if they were selling the rival Quisqueya brand produced by Mexico’s Cemex.

Holcim Mexico to invest up to US$50m in 2019

Mexico: Holcim Mexico plans to invest up to US$50m in 2019 as part of a project to improve plant efficiency and its Disensa distribution network. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim said it wants to implement improvements at both its cement and ready-mix concrete plants, according to Reuters. It has a particular focus on reducing emissions. On the distribution side the building materials company said that its distribution business is a part of its long-term plan for Latin America.

Votorantim’s construction materials joint venture starts operation

Brazil: Votorantim’s construction materials joint venture has started operation. The scheme, Juntos Somos Mais, is collaboration between Votorantim Cimentos, Tigre Participações and Gerdau Aços Longos. Votorantim holds a 45% share of the scheme. The joint venture will expand Votorantim’s Juntos Somos + scheme, which has been running since 2014. To date it operates in over 40,000 stores with over 60,000 registered participants.

Brisk cement trade reported at Ethiopian-Eritrean border

Eritrea/Ethiopia: High volumes of cement imports have been reported across the Ethiopian-Eritrean border following a normalisation of relations between the neighbouring countries. Since mid-September 2018 an estimated 50t/day of cement have been transported from Adigrat in Ethiopia to three border towns in Eritrea, according to business owners in Adigrat quoted by the Addis Fortune newspaper. “A minimum of 20 trucks carrying cement is leaving from Adigrat to Eritrea daily,” said Angesom Berhane, owner of a cement store in Adigrat.

Cemex’s digital platform hits over 10,000 customers

Mexico: Cemex says that its digital platform, Cemex Go, has reached over 10,000 customers or a quarter of its worldwide customer base. Cemex Go is currently available in Mexico, the US, Colombia, the UK, and Germany and is expected to be deployed in half of the company’s markets in the coming weeks. By the end of 2018, it is expected to be available in all of Cemex’s key locations, serving approximately 45,000 customers.

The system allows the company and its customers to will be used in real time to manage order placement, live tracking of shipments and invoices and payments for the company’s main products, including bagged and bulk cement. Cemex Go was introduced in Mexico and the US in late 2017.

Cemex launches online store

Mexico: Cemex has launched an online retail store to sell its construction material products. The new website is part of the company’s Cemex Go digital platform.

“Cemex’s launch of the Construrama Online Store builds on our efforts to transform the construction industry into a more efficient model. Our clients will now enjoy easy access to a wider catalogue of products and be able to select, purchase, and follow up on their online order, generating significant savings in productivity for our Construrama network of retail stores, builders, and final customers,” said Sergio Menéndez, Vice President of Distributor Sales of Cemex in Mexico.

The Construrama Online Store is part of the company’s commercial digital vision which aims to offer its clients a seamless experience for placing orders, live tracking of shipments and managing invoices and payments for Cemex’s main products.

LafargeHolcim opens 1000th store in retail network in Latin America

11 January 2018

Costa Rica/Latin America: LafargeHolcim has opened the 1000th store in its Disensa retail network in Latin America. The milestone store opened in Costa Rica in late December 2017. Since expanding its Disensa network beyond Ecuador in April 2017, the company has added around 500 Disensa-branded stores in Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico and Nicaragua. LafargeHolcim plans to continue its network expansion in Latin America by opening its first store in Brazil in early 2018.

“The roll-out of the group’s retail strategy in emerging markets such as Latin America is enabling us to get even closer to consumers,” said Oliver Osswald, Head Region Latin America at LafargeHolcim.

The Disensa network is intended to offer self-builders and smaller contractors access to LafargeHolcim’s own building solutions as well as other construction materials and services, including microcredit and technical help. The concept was developed in Ecuador as a franchise scheme. The group also launched its Binastore brand of retail stores in the Middle East and Africa in mid-2017, opening stores in Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Zambia.

Dangote Cement to sell cement online with Jumia

05 December 2017

Nigeria: Dangote Cement has signed a deal with retail firm Jumia Nigeria to sell cement online. Individual and corporate customers can buy a minimum of 300 bags of 50kg of Dangote Cement and have them delivered via the new service. The pilot initiative will cover Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja at launch.

“Dangote Cement decided to work with Jumia Nigeria based on its credibility and excellent performance over the years in online shopping management,” said Dangote Cement, Key Account Director, Chux Mogbolu. He added that the new scheme is intended to help stop online scams selling cement.

LafargeHolcim launches Binastore retail network in Madagascar

04 December 2017

Madagascar: LafargeHolcim has launched a local franchise of its Binastore retail network at Tsaralalàna. The initiative has signed up 72 local firms, according to the L'Express de Madagascar. The building materials producer expanded its retail network in the Middle East and Africa in June 2017. It also operates a cement plant at Ibity near Antsirabe.
