Bhavya Cements wins approval for 3Mt/yr cement grinding plant in Odisha
12 September 2014India: Bhavya Cements has received approval from the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA) for the construction of a 3Mt/yr capacity cement grinding plant in Dhenkanal, Odisha, with a capital investment of US$60m. Separately, Shree Cement also plans to set up a 3Mt/yr capacity cement plant in the same location for US$74.4m.
ARVOS Group becomes a standalone corporation from Alstom with Triton as new shareholder
02 September 2014Germany: ARVOS Group, the former Alstom Auxiliary Components business, has become a standalone corporation with Triton as its new shareholder. ARVOS Group is a global manufacturer of regenerative heat exchangers for thermal power generation facilities, process critical applications in the chemical and petrochemical industry and grinding mills. Over the course of the transition, the company's headquarters will be relocated from Mannheim, Germany to Heidelberg, Germany.
"As a standalone company, we are able to focus more effectively on strengthening our global market and technology leadership position in order to enhance thermal power plants through sustainable energy efficiency and the chemical industry through innovation," said ARVOS Group CEO, Thorsten Holl.
Shree Cement to acquire Jaiprakash grinding unit
27 August 2014India: Shree Cement has received the approval to acquire a 1.5Mt/yr cement grinding unit in Panipat, Haryana, which is currently owned by Jaiprakash Associates. The unit will reportedly be sold for US$59.6m.
The deal is subject to adjustments for any financial indebtedness and net working capital taken over as of the closing date and subject to satisfactory completion of due diligence and obtaining necessary approvals and consents.
Turkish and Ivorian firms team up for new grinding plant
06 August 2014Ivory Coast: The Turkish cement firm Limak Çimento, a unit of local conglomerate Limak Holding, has announced that it will team up with Ivory Coast-based company Akfirbat to set up a cement grinding and packaging plant in the Ivory Coast in what will be a US$50m project. The two companies held a signing ceremony in the Turkish capital Ankara for the establishment of a joint venture company named Limak Afrika SA.
The plant, to be built in the Ivorian capital Abidjan, will have the capacity to grind 1.0Mt/yr of cement as well as being equipped to produce 1.0Mm3/yr of concrete. Construction will start later on in 2014 with operations expected to begin in October 2015. It is proposed that the output of the plant will be sold in the Ivory Coast as well as in other African countries.
Sri Lanka: Holcim Lanka is spending US$22m towards upgrading its cement grinding plant in Ruhunu, Galle. The investment will increase the plant's cement grinding capacity from 0.6Mt/yr to 1Mt/yr. The upgrade will also increase capacity on a Geocycle waste shredding line, building up the clinker warehouse and process efficiency improvement to a sludge drying facility.
"We also intend to make considerable improvements to our distribution by enhancing our logistics," said Holcim Group CEO Bernard Fontana during his first visit to Sri Lanka. Holcim will be concentrating on increasing their production from both their facilities in Puttalam and Ruhunu in the future.
"In our 18 years of existence in Sri Lanka, we have tripled our cement manufacturing capacity to reach 2.3Mt/yr," said Philippe Richart, CEO, Holcim Lanka. Holcim Lanka sold approximately 1.5Mt of cement in 2013 and generated annual revenues of US$154m in 2013.
Shree Cement to set up grinding plant in Odisha
11 June 2014India: Shree Cement plans to set up a 3Mt/yr cement grinding plant at Odapada in Dhenkanal District, Odisha State for about US$76.6m. The location will enable the cement maker to utilise the fly ash produced at the power plants owned by Lanco Badband Power, GMR Kamalanga, Navabharat Ventures and Bhushan Steel based in the region. The plant will be built on an area covering 0.24km2 of land which will be allotted by the district administration on Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation's request.
India: ACC Cement plans to invest US$499m to modernise its Jamul facility in Chhattisgarh and to add a grinding unit of 1.5Mt/yr capacity in its Jharkhand-based unit, according to ACC sales director C Kurian. ACC aims to decommission the existing plant at Jamul and set up a new technology-based cement plant with a 4Mt/yr production capacity. Kurian added that the Holcim-owned company is likely to finish the work by the second quarter of 2015.
ACC currently has a production capacity of 6Mt/yr but plans to raise it to 10Mt/yr by 2016. It has six plants and holds a market share of 12% in India.
Sri Lanka: Work on a Thatta Cement project in Sri Lanka has ended because the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has not yet executed the Land Lease Agreement (LLA). Basic engineering for the cement grinding, storing and bagging plant has been completed but the project has been suspended pending legal issues.
Thatta Cement secretary Taha Hamdani has complained to capital market regulators about the SLPA also signing an agreement with another company whose operational area lies close to its cement project. It appears to obstruct setting up of the cement project within the layout originally planned by the SLPA. The company officials say further progress on the project would recommence 'as soon as LLA is signed with SLPA'.
Lucky Cement opens grinding plant in Iraq
09 April 2014Iraq: Lucky Cement has started production at a cement grinding plant in Basra, southern Iraq. The US$40m plant is a joint venture between Pakistan-based Lucky Cement and the Al-Shawy family. It has a production capacity of 3000t/day or 0.8Mt/yr. The plant is intended to supply cement for the southern Iraq market.
In comments reported by Mena Report Lucky Cement CEO Muhammad Ali Tabba said that the completed grinding plant is the first phase of development at the site. Lucky Cement may continue development at the plant investing US$125m to build an integrated cement production line with a capacity of 1.25Mt/yr.
Tabba added that Lucky Cement is also working on building a US$240m plant in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It has a 50-50 agreement with the Rawji Group, a local company, to start production via a company called Nyumba Ya Akiba. When operational, the plant in DRC will produce 1.2Mt/yr of cement.
Lafarge Republic to build 0.85Mt/yr grinding plant
05 February 2014Philippines: Lafarge Republic plans to build a 0.85Mt/yr grinding plant for its Norzagaray cement plant to meet increased cement demand. The grinding plant will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2015.
The new grinding plant is intended to supplement the output of a new mill at its Teresa cement plant in Rizal province, which due to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2015. The Teresa mill is expected to have an investment of at least Euro25m and will have a production capacity of 0.85Mt/yr.
The two mills will increase Lafarge Republic's cement production capacity to 6Mt/yr. Lafarge manufactures the cement brands Portland, Pozzolan and Type 1P. It sells its products in 40kg bags or in bulk at 800kg and 1000kg per load in bulk carriers.
