July - August 2021

The July - August 2021 issue of Global Cement Magazine contains the third in Neil Taylor's series of articles on Better and Cheaper Cement, this time looking at raw material properties. There are also technical contributions regarding conveying, quarrying, maintenance and green concrete, as well as a look at how diverse recruitment strategies could benefit the cement sector.

This issue's regional report comes from North Africa and the Middle East to coincide with the second Middle Eastern Cement Virtual Seminar on 6 July 2021. We are also pleased to be able to include comment on the cement sector in North Korea, courtesy of 38 North.

Engineering safer conveyors: Art meets science

All new conveyor systems inevitably succumb to the punishing bulk handling environment and will begin the slow process of degradation. They will require more time and labour for maintenance, experience shorter spans between outages, longer periods of downtime and ever-increasing operating costs. This period is also accompanied by an increased chance of injury or fatality as workers become exposed to equipment to perform cleaning, maintenance and short-term fixes. A total system replacement is cost prohibitive, but to remain compliant and/or meet ever-increasing production demands, upgrades and repairs are unavoidable. How can the operator strike the right balance?
