Cemex earns CDP climate A rating
08 February 2024Mexico: Cemex has secured a place on environmental non-profit organisation CDP's 2023 A List for its leadership and transparency in delivering CO2 emissions reduction. Since initiating its Future in Action sustainability initiative in 2020, Cemex achieved a 13% reduction in its CO2 emissions up to 2023.
Cemex CEO Fernando González said "We are proud to be part of this prestigious group of climate action leaders and to receive CDP’s A rating, which reflects Cemex’s leadership in climate action and transparency through significant demonstrable actions. In this Decade to Deliver, we are committed to reaching our ambitious decarbonisation goals so that Net Zero is achievable by 2050."
Titan Cement Group earns Climate A rating
07 February 2024Greece: Titan Cement Group has appeared on carbon disclosure organisation CDP's A List for corporate transparency and climate impact mitigation. The company achieved an A- for water security. Titan Cement Group says that the recognition aligns with its 2026 Green Growth strategy.
Titan Cement Group reduced its CO2 emissions by 10% between 2020 and 2023. In 2023, it commenced construction of the 1.9Mt/yr IFESTOS carbon capture and storage project.
Votorantim Cimentos achieves top CDP climate rating
07 February 2024Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has earned an A the CDP Climate Change 2023 Questionnaire. This achievement reflects the producer's leadership in climate change performance and transparency. Between 1990 and 2022, Votorantim Cimentos reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cement produced by 24%.
Global director of sustainability, institutional relations, product development and engineering Álvaro Lorenz said "Earning the highest score from CDP is something we are very proud of. We work daily to achieve our goals in line with our 2030 Sustainability Commitments and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Tackling the negative effects of climate change is at the core of our strategy and we recognise the role, importance and relevance of our decarbonisation journey."
Heidelberg Materials is a Climate A-Lister
06 February 2024Germany: Sustainability disclosure organisation CDP has named Heidelberg Materials on its Climate A List 2024 for its corporate transparency and climate performance. The group also received an A- rating for Water Security. Heidelberg Materials’ product and process innovation efforts toward CO2 emissions reduction include carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects aimed at capturing 10Mt of CO2 by 2030.
Heidelberg Materials’ chief sustainability officer Nicola Kimm said "We are honoured to be included in CDP’s Climate A List and to be recognised for our efforts in decarbonisation. This also demonstrates our leadership in the industry – both in breakthrough technologies such as CCUS, and when it comes to sustainable products. We will continue to drive the transition to low-carbon construction."
Pair of CDP awards for Holcim
17 February 2023Switzerland: CDP, a non-profit organisation that helps industrial players improve their environmental performance, has recognised Holcim's sustainability achievements with an award for a double ‘A’ ranking in climate and water management. The double ‘A’ award, a first for any cement producer, was handed over at the 2023 CDP Europe Awards in Paris, France, on 16 February 2023.
Magali Anderson, Holcim’s Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer, said "This award is a testament to the progress that our teams around the world are making to build a net-zero future, while protecting and restoring precious freshwater resources. 2022 marks the third consecutive year that our climate actions have put us on CDP's A List, and our first ‘A’ ranking for our work on water security. I am confident we will keep the momentum going in years to come."
CDP raises Dangote Cement’s climate rating
22 December 2022Nigeria: The CDP has raised its rating for Dangote Cement to B from B- previously. The improved score indicates that the cement producer made continued efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of its business and has improved its sustainability reporting. It is the fourth time the company has submitted data to the CDP and the second consecutive year it has improved its rating.
Michel Puchercos, the chief executive officer of Dangote Cement, said, “The CDP rating upgrade clearly illustrates the growth we have achieved in our commitment to transparency on climate and environmental issues. This year, our Alternative Fuel Project has reached an advanced stage and aims to leverage waste management solutions and reduce CO2 emissions. As of the first nine months of 2022, we co-processed 101,553t of waste representing a 77% increase over last year.”
Cementir Holding achieves A- climate change rating from CDP
14 December 2021Italy: Cementir Holding has been achieved its first CDP A- rating for climate change mitigation in its operations. The producer said that the global average rating is B-, compared to B in Europe and in the cement and concrete industry globally. CDP awarded Cementir a B for water security, its first such rating in the category.
Chair and chief executive officer Francesco Caltagirone said “This achievement is a further recognition of our efforts to make our carbon footprint more sustainable. We are committed to tackling climate change and minimising our environmental impact.”
Ambuja Cements responds to CDP Water A List 2021 listing
08 December 2021India: Ambuja Cements has celebrated the recognition of its water management practices through its listing on CDP's Water A List 2021. The company is the first cement producer to acheive the rating. It said that it succeeded through 'prudent' use of water- for instance through modular curing and concrete mix proportion adjustments - and harvesting. In addition, it continues to evolve its cement portfolio to minimise its consumption of natural resources, with a focus on water. Ambuja Cements' Sustainable Development Ambition 2030 strategy commits it to a freshwater withdrawal reduction of 15% by 2030. Its initiatives have so far saved 70Ml of water, according to the company. It called this a 'robust step' on the global path to sustainable construction and said that it will continue to advocate for environmentally friendly solutions.
Managing director and chief executive officer Neeraj Akhoury said "Water has always been the key focus area for Ambuja Cements. This achievement reaffirms our will to remain committed to address water scarcity issues in future and contribute to the establishment of sustainable tomorrow."
Belgium: Environmental disclosure organisation CDP has listed Cemex, HeidelbergCement and Holcim among 200 companies on its 2021 Climate Change A List for actions to mitigate their CO2 emissions. Holcim’s Indian subsidiaries ACC and Ambuja Cements also received A ratings. Both ACC and Ambuja appeared on CDP’s 2021 Water Security A List, while Holcim scored an A-.
Chief executive officer Jan Jenisch said “Building on the launch of our nature-positive strategy this year, we set new and ambitious goals to achieve water security across our operations worldwide, with our colleagues from Ambuja in India leading the way. CDP’s rankings this year are a testimony to the tremendous work carried out by our 70,000 people around the world and a great encouragement for all of us to keep raising the bar.”
ACC signs Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge
16 August 2021India: Holcim subsidiary ACC has signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge and joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Race to Zero campaign. The producer partnered with CDP India’s Science-Based Targets (SBT) Incubator programme to develop its targets. It has committed to reduce its cement’s Scope 1 emissions by 21% to 409kg/t from 511kg/t and its Scope 2 emissions by 48% per tonne between 2018 and 2030. In 2020, the Scope 1 emissions of ACC’s cement were 493kg/t.
CDP India executive director Shankar Venkateswaran said, “CDP India’s SBT Incubator supports companies in India to align with these targets. By committing to science-based emissions reduction targets, ACC has positioned itself as an industry leader, showing the way for the sector’s transformation to a low carbon sustainable future. We believe that this will encourage more companies on their Net Zero Journey.”
