Sander Bovee appointed as Chief Financial Officer of Calderys
09 October 2024France: Calderys has appointed Sander Bovee as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Bovee, a Dutch national, previously worked for Nouryon (formerly known as AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals), a specialty chemicals company, as its Vice President of Group Control & Treasury. He was also the company’s interim CFO for a period. Prior to this he worked for AkzoNobel in a variety of business and corporate finance roles based in the US, China and the Netherlands. He holds a master’s degree in economics and an executive masters in Finance and Control at Maastricht University.
Calderys Group reports successful integration of HWI and Calderys
21 February 2024France: Calderys Group says that it has successfully implemented technology sharing between US-based HWI and Calderys, following their integration in February 2023. In the past 12 months, the group has transferred select Calderys products to HWI in the Americas and introduced HWI products in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Asia-Pacific. The refractories supplier says that the collaboration offers customers an enhanced product range.
Calderys Group president and CEO Michel Cornelissen said "The past 12 months have been exciting, demanding and very productive for our newly-formed group. The combination brought together two dynamic businesses with complimentary product ranges and created the opportunity for technology sharing and cooperation for the benefit of the world's high temperature manufacturing sectors. I am delighted that we are already seeing great results. Throughout 2024, we will continue to add to, and update, our product portfolios.”
HWI details upgrades in 2023
27 December 2023US: Calderys-subsidiary HWI has highlighted upgrades it has undertaken in 2023. This has included upgrading plant production software, increasing capacity at the White Cloud plant in Michigan, the Lowellville plant in Ohio and the Thomasville plant in Georgia, and adding new equipment at sites in Ohio and Missouri. Additional investment projects are planned for 2024.
Ross Wilkin, Calderys Senior Vice President of Americas, said, "In less than a year under new ownership and since combining with Calderys, we've successfully integrated our Americas operations with the former Calderys operations in the US and in Brazil, enhanced our products and services portfolio for customers, and completed massive investments in our manufacturing facilities. We are well-positioned for the future."
Private equity investment company Platinum Equity completed its acquisition of Calderys from Imerys in January 2023. It then purchased HWI in February 2023.
Calderys launches new brand platform
29 November 2023France: Refractories supplier Calderys has announced the launch of its new brand platform following its integration of HWI (formerly HarbisonWalker International) earlier in 2023. The platform is comprised of four values, reflecting the personality of Calderys’ company culture, namely accountability, authenticity, multiculturalism and tenacity.
Chief people officer Melissa Bihary and global vice president communications Aurélie de Chassey-Hayot said “These new values and the overall platform have been developed through an employee-led exercise. Therefore, they truly define the essence of who we are and how we do business. They guide our actions and behaviors and help us make the best decisions for the benefit of our customers.”
HarbisonWalker International launches new branding
02 June 2023US: HarbisonWalker International has unveiled its new redesigned branding. The refractories supplier says that the new brand identity reflects it standing as the North American arm of Calderys Group. The two companies merged following their acquisition by Platinum Equity in 2022.
Calderys Group president and CEO Michel Cornelissen said “The new visual identity of HWI, as a member of Calderys, is a significant step on our journey to form a unified business that incorporates the best of both brands to create a global high-growth leader. We have undertaken this exercise with thoughtful intention to preserve the legacy of the HWI brand in the Americas, while reflecting the global stature of the Calderys brand.”
Platinum Equity completes acquisition of Calderys
01 February 2023France: Private equity investment company Platinum Equity has completed its acquisition of Calderys from Imerys. It announced in July 2022 that it had agreed to pay around Euro930m to buy Imerys’ High Temperature Solutions business (HTS). Michel Cornelissen will remain as the president and chief executive officer of the refractory manufacturer.
In December 2022 Platinum Equity said that it has signed a definitive merger agreement to buy HarbisonWalker International (HWI), a supplier of refractory products and services in North America. the move is intended to create a global refractories supplier. The HWI deal is expected to complete in the first half of 2023 subject to closing conditions and regulatory approval.
China: The government of Jiangsu province has awarded an Environmental Protection certificate to Imerys subsidiary Calderys’ Zhangjiang refractory plant. The company said that the certification results from years of hard to enhance environmental efforts beyond national requirements. One example of the work is dust-proof partitioning around all dust-emitting equipment.
Environment, health and safety supervisor Ricken Ren said, “In 2016, the plant improved the quality of its raw materials. With major work no longer required to lessen the water content of the materials, it was able to reduce the use of its dry kiln, which uses natural gases in its drying process, in turn greatly reducing the plant’s energy consumption. ” He added, “Keeping the plant’s environmental impact as low as possible is a never-ending job, and we cannot lose focus. We perform daily checks to ensure devices such as our dust collectors are working effectively, and we are always monitoring our emissions during operation according to national laws. Every department worked together on environmental protection performance. It is a great teamwork result.”
India: Calderys has completed its acquisition of Hysil’s calcium silicate insulation division. The deal was signed in January 2020 but delayed to July 2020 due to coronavirus-related lockdowns. Calcium silicate boards are used for thermal insulation in industries such as cement, metallurgy, oil refinery, petro-chemical and power plants. Calderys says it now the largest manufacturing capacity of calcium silicate boards in India and South East Asia. The purchase will enable it to expand its product portfolio and offer calcium silicate insulation products along with refractories solutions.
Calderys acquires NG Johnson Northern
20 March 2017UK: Calderys has completed its acquisition of NG Johnson Northern, a refractory installation company based in Ellesmere Port. It aims to retain the brand and expand its Engineering, Design and Supervision activities in the UK market. NG Johnson Northern focuses on incineration, petrochemical and aluminium industries and its clients include Hanson, LafargeHolcim and Quinn Cement.
India: Calderys India and Magnesita have entered into a strategic alliance to work together in India and to increase their product portfolios for the cement industry. Calderys India will be the lead contact for the sales, marketing and after sales for Magnesita in the region as well as continuing to sell its own refractory product line. Alongside this Magnesita will supply technical support to Calderys India to support the shared market.
