Power Cement shuts down old production lines

20 August 2019

Pakistan: Power Cement has shutdown the older production lines at its integrated Nooriabad plant due to falling demand and prices. Chairman Nasim Beg said that the old lines were shut because they were ‘inefficient’ and not competitive under present conditions, according to Bloomberg. The plant had a production capacity of around 3150t/day from its older lines. In July 2019 it completed the installation of a new 2.46Mt/yr clinker line supplied by Denmark’s FLSmidth.

08 August 2019

Denmark: FLSmidth’s order intake for its cement business grew by 29% to Euro604m in the first half of 2019 from Euro469m in the same period in 2018. It said this was mainly due to ‘strong’ order intake in the first quarter of 2019, which included two large cement orders, together worth around Euro120m. The second quarter also included a larger order worth Euro45m. The division’s revenue rose by 7% to Euro548m and its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) remained stable at Euro28.4m.

FLSmidth working on dual-white and grey cement line conversion for Alsafwa Cement

27 June 2019

Saudi Arabia: Denmark’s FLSmidth has revealed that it is working on a project to convert a grey cement production line at Alsafwa Cement to a dual-white and grey line. The modified kiln is expected to be commissioned in early 2020. The production objectives are to produce a minimum of 2000t/day white clinker with a maximum heat consumption of 1380kcal/kg clinker. No value for the project has been disclosed.

FLSmidth plans to install its Duoflex Burner inside the kiln. To minimise costs it says that only minor changes will be made to the current preheater with as much existing equipment as possible being reused. In this case, the oil handling equipment, clinker cooler, raw material storage system and raw mill grinding equipment will be reused.

New Moroccan order for FLSmidth

20 June 2019

Morocco: Denmark’s FLSmidth has won a contract to deliver a greenfield cement plant to a new customer in Morocco. The contract is worth US$45m.

The contract was signed by FLSmidth, together with Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc (SGTM) on 19 July 2019 signed a contract with TEKCIM S.A. to co-deliver a 3600t/day (1.2Mt/yr) cement plant. The plant will be built in Ouled Ghanem in Morocco’s El-Jadida Province and is scheduled to be fully operational during the third quarter of 2022.

This is the first business cooperation between FLSmidth and TEKCIM. The process leading to the agreement has involved the African Development Bank as well as local commercial banks, and the parties involved have set very high standards in terms of quality and sustainability.

“The project includes state-of-the-art equipment that will provide TEKCIM with a very efficient cement plant,” said Jan Kjaersgaard, FLSmidth’s President of Cement. It also demonstrates FLSmidth’s ability to support customers where financing is involved, which has been a key aspect to be awarded this project. The plant will fulfil strict international standards, which is a clear statement that we as a premium player in the industry are following suit on our agenda of delivering sustainable productivity.”

The contract scope includes engineering, supply of a full range of equipment from crushing to packing and load-out, supervision, commissioning and training of a local workforce. The order is effective immediately and has been recognised in the order intake for the second quarter of 2019.

FLSmidth completes acquisition of IMP Automation Group

05 June 2019

Denmark: FLSmidth has completed its acquisition of IMP Automation Group following the approval by the competition authorities. The purchase was first announced in February 2019 when FLSmidth said it was adding the company as part to its portfolio of automated laboratory solutions for the mining industry. It said that the integration of IMP would enable FLSmidth to support the expanding market for automated laboratories, which has experienced recent growth due to a combination of high exploration activity and increased focus on productivity, automation and digitalisation.

"We also see great potential from the joining of our new colleagues to further enhance the development of our digital solutions for mining. For instance, data collected from online analysers and the laboratory can be used to optimise the entire flow sheet for mining operations. Using this data to augment our process optimisation initiatives is an exciting prospect," said Tina Knudsen, FLSmidth’s general manager for Sampling, Preparation and Analysis – Mining.

FLSmidth gains 130 IMP employees, including IMP's managing director, Boyne Hohenstein. The IMP business will be consolidated into FLSmidth from 1 June 2019 and the cost of the purchase will be paid out in the second quarter of 2019.

FLSmidth launches digital product to analyse equipment failure

08 May 2019

Denmark: FLSmidth has launched ECS/UptimeGo, a downtime analysis product designed to increase plant uptime by identifying the causes of plant and equipment failures. Real-time dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) enable the measurement of the real impact of machine failures interrupting the production. In addition, ECS/UptimeGo provides Pareto charts and the ability to monitor maintenance and reliability KPIs to give operators a picture of a downtime event and its causes.

ECS/UptimeGo can be integrated with existing process control systems and can be paired with FLSmidth ECS/ControlCenter for an automated process to gather all production stoppages. It also features a graphic interface that allows operators to document and analyse stoppages.

Flender increases torque of N-Arpex coupling range

08 May 2019

Germany: Flender has increased the torque of its N-Arpex coupling product range with two new designs featuring eight and ten bolting points. N-Arpex now covers a diameter up to 988mm and a torque up to 2MNm. The compact design and enhanced bore capacities also enable a leap in size. A smaller coupling transmits a higher torque compared to the predecessor model. The steel disc coupling is suitable for use in drive applications including pumps, fans, compressors, generators, turbines, and paper and printing machines.

Other improvements include a more compact Flender conical bolt connection for the plate packs. With the two new N-Arpex couplings, Flender has introduced a modular system that increases the number of available types as well as reducing the number of components required. The three standard series of the predecessor Arpex merge into one N-Arpex series. The new series of couplings has also been designed for use in potentially explosive environments as defined in directive 2014/34/EU and fulfil the requirements of API610/ISO13709 and API671/ISO10441.
